The Answer Man: Bill Clinton's Comeback

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

It's becoming increasingly clear that Bill Clinton can't function without Hillary Clinton. Nor can Hillary Clinton function without Bill Clinton.

When Barack Obama signed up Hillary for Secretary of State, he knew that he was getting a twofer. Now that Bill has successfully completed his North Korea mission, he is sure to play an increasingly prominent role in foreign affairs.

The trick for Hillary will be to use him to solidify rather than undermine her position as Secretary of State. Her husband solved a thorny problem in helping to liberate two American journalists who either strayed into North Korean territory or were seized in China by border guards. The episode earns him some plaudits, allowing him to burnish his reputation as well as his wife's.

So far, so good. But will Obama use Bill as the magic bullet in the future to deflect, or solve, crises? Or will he find that Bill becomes a freelancer, exceeding his mandate? It will be interesting to learn, for example, if Clinton confined himself to his mandate of extricating the two women, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, from the North Korean Gulag or whether he broached the subject of nuclear weapons in meeting with Kim Jong Il.

At a minimum, he did accomplish something else -- a fresh photo of the frail dear leader, sitting next to a former president, the kind of homage and fealty that the North Koreans crave. For make no mistake: Clinton was paying court to Kim. Conservatives will remonstrate that Clinton and, by extension, Obama were extending feckless apologies that will only prompt the North Korean despot to engage in further shenanigans.

For Obama, however, the hostage crisis -- which is what it really was -- will have to prompt him to further mull over the use of Bill Clinton as an informal representative. For Hillary, there is only an upside; as long as the White House assents, she can tap Bill as her troubleshooter of troubleshooters. She has a whole battery of them, after all, beginning with Richard Holbrooke, who is supposed to pacify Afghanistan and Pakistan.

For now, Bill has emerged in a new incarnation -- as a statesman. It's a role that he tried to play as president, but always slipped from his grasp, whether it was the refusal of the Palestinians to reach a lasting peace with the Israelis or his own sexual peccadilloes or his pardoning of Marc Rich. Now both Bill and Hillary have left behind politics to become emissaries to the world and begin their latest comeback together.

"refusal of the Palestinians to reach a lasting peace with the Israelis "

You just had to throw that tendentious claim in, didn't you?

It is strangely quiet about the fact that the release was prepared and handled by the Swedish
embassy in Pyongyang.
Clinton may well emerge as a brilliant statesman when seen on television with the two girls.
However the hard work was done by the Swedes.
Sweden by the way is chairman of the European Community from July 1 and six months on.

In reading all these blogs, it seems to me that for most of them, political party is more important than country. This is a big problem, especially on the Republican side. So many people want to have bad things happen so that their party can "win." But, instead, if people look at the world that way, we all lose.
We should be looking for positives, regardless of who is in charge, not negatives because "our" side is now not in charge. I've been studying pretty hard on all the politics going on, I've been an elected official, so I've felt the various pressures. But, what I see that has taken place in this release of two journalists is all highly positive. Rather than speculating about possible "bad" things that might have been agreed to, or what might happen in the future, we need to rejoice in the good thing that happened and look to the highly intelligent people who are now in charge to help solve the various problems that may come up. In other words, we shouldn't be so constantly critical of every thing that happens. It's almost like people want failure, regardless of the consequences. Hey, try being positive!

Tell the Republicans that. None of the Democrats have ever wanted bad things to happen so that their party wins, but all of the Republicans I know have.

The democrats rose to power as a result of the bad things that happened while the republicans ruled the country. Things will likely go from bad to worse, because the democrats behave as though they rose to power on their own merits.

Is your journalist onto something? What does it mean to say "two American journalists who either strayed into North Korean territory or were seized in China by border guards?" Who would seriously consider that North Korea would violate Chinese territory, their closest friend with whom they have a large border? It just isn't plausible. These two individuals were provocateurs who, for whatever reason, either as individuals or as spies (that possibility should never be excluded) created an international incident. Let's not make their behaviour heroic. The message needs to be sent that the world is not a US playground, where Americans can intrude wherever they want to, welcome or not.

Hard to figure how the right will turn this into a negative, but I'm sure they will.

I say "Thank You", to EVERYONE involved in getting these women home safe. I have decided that I will just be grateful when something good happens. Some folks could stand to learn to do the same.......

Hostage crisis? The two american women *did* commit the crime for which they were arrested and convicted, and the same act is also a crime under our laws, too.

The fact is that North Korea has acted with considerable restraint in this situation.

Are you saying we should have left them there?

So S1mon, you have access to evidence to convict these journalists of espionage? Wow, were you on their jury?
As the article above mentions, we don't even know what lands they were on when they were taken into custody by the N. Koreans.

It is ironic that we declared our independence and instituted a government amongst ourselves in order to exercise our sovereign authority for ourselves rather than being subject to a foreign authority, and we have now become the world's superpower subjecting foreign countries to our authority.

Whatever the motives, who would be so mean as to tear apart the kind and empathetic actions of a leader in using his earned power to free wronged prisoners? Republicans who want COMPLETE FAILURE when there is absolute need to right the wrongs of a greedy mob who wrongly held office.

I agree-the Republicans have made it pretty clear that the power is more important than the public interest.

Let's kill this myth once and for all: Clinton did jack to free the hostages. There was no negotiating, no diplomacy, no brilliant scheming. Kim simply wanted Bill to show up. That's all it took.

He has good reason to have an ego. Besides, I think he was very classy. He stayed on the plane and didn't exit until the women had a chance for their reunion. I think he tried to stay OUT of the spotlight.

You have to love Bill Clinton. How I wish he was President again! Only Bill could have pulled this off.
And probably the only one who can fix our economy quickly. I hope President Obama has the good sense to have Bill play an important role in his administration!

Bill Clinton's and Hillary Clinton's brilliance and magnamity are wonderful examples of how good people can use their talents for the right reasons.
It is no surprise, however, that some right-wing birther and basher-types will try to make this extraordinary act of kindness into something negative.
