1. KARL AUGUSTE ¹ KOPPLIN was born October 14, 1857 in Domitz, Pommern, Prussia, Germany, and died February 12, 1931 in Bath, SD. He married ALBERTINA BRANDENBERG April 09, 1878 in Germany. She was born October 29, 1858 in Prussia, and died May 23, 1944 in Bath, SD.

Notes for KARL AUGUSTE KOPPLIN :

Carl and Albertina and their 3 children Bertha, Herman, and Martha, came to the United States in 1885, landing in the port of New York. From there they travelled to Wisconsin, where Anna and Wilhelm William were born, and then to Minnesota where Ella was born. They finally settled in Bath, SD, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Carl worked on the section crew of the railroad and the whole family worked at other jobs as soon as they were old enough. They all learned English, and although not all of the children were able to attend school for many years, they made use of the schooling and continued learning and reading at home.

Albertina's obituary:

"Mrs. Albertina Kopplin, 85, resident of Brown county for the past 51 years, died at her home in Bath Tuesday after a long illness.

"Mrs. Kopplin was born in Germany, Oct. 29, 1858, and was a member of the Zion Lutheran church. She was married to Carl Kopplin there April 9, 1878.

"Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Bertha Kuhfeld, Aberdeen; Mrs. Martha Bower, Vallejo, Calif.; Mrs. Anna Vandenburg, Park City, Mont.; Mrs. Ella Musekamp and Mary, both of Bath; Mrs. Bessie sic, Wilson, Canada; one son, Herman, Bath; 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Her husband and a son preceded her in death.

"Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p. m. at the Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. L. C. Benson, Groton, officiating. Burial will be at the Bath cemetery."

Notes for ELLA KOPPLIN:

Sometime after her father, Carl, died, Ella and Fritz moved to the family home at Bath. Ella cared for her mother and sister Mary. After Albertina died, Fritz and Ella stayed on for a number of years. Fritz worked for area farmers, and Ella boarded several high school students from the area. She was always cheerful and ready to help anyone in need. She had no children, but always remembered birthdays, graduations and such of all the Neices and nephews and their children. For a short time her nephew Wesley Kuhfeld and his wife stayed with them. Herman, who never married, also stayed at the place when he wasn't working. Ella cared for him during his last illness.

Several years later, Fritz and Ella moved to a farm near Tyndall, SD so Fritz could farm with his brother Rudy. Mary went with them, of course.

Ella spent her last years in a wheelchair. They managed to get by with the help of some of the neighbors who came in to clean. Mrs. Olson was good neighbor who brought homemade goodies and helped Ella with her personal care. The house was old and not modern, which meant water had to be carried in and Fritz sold his cattle and he and Rudy did some work together. But Fritz was not able to do much anymore. They finally moved to a farm where the house was modern, but before a week was out, Ella had to go to the hospital from there to the nursing home. She died there.

Notes for JOE ANDERSON:

Ella's first husband, Joe Anderson, was shot to death by a fleeing crook, who mistook Joe's conductor's uniform for a policeman. Joe had gotten off the train and the man shot him as he walked by the coach window.

Notes for MARY KOPPLIN:

Mary was what they used to call retarded. She lived with Ella and Fritz. She spoke very little, but was emphatic when she did. She said "no" and her favorite expression "O God" which she used many times as she watched the card games and thought the player had made a mistake or a stupid play. Mary liked children and cats and didn't miss much of what was going on. One time Ella forgot to turn on the radio for the news, and mary kept pointing to the heater, which was her way of saying it was time for Gabriel Heater to give the news.

Ella was very sick in June of 1972, and was in the hospital. Emma came from Canada for a visit. She and Mary were sleeping together. Mary had gotten up in the night, so the next morning Emma decided to let Mary rest. Later that morning when she tried to wake her she realized that mary had died.

2. BERTHA AMELIA ² KOPPLIN(KARL AUGUSTE¹) was born June 20, 1878 in Hamburg, Germany, and died January 21, 1948 in Bath, SD. She married ALBERT W. KUHFIELD June 03, 1903 in Warner, South Dakota. He was born November 09, 1878 in Germany, and died February 28, 1935 in Warner, South Dakota.

Notes for BERTHA AMELIA KOPPLIN :

Came to the US in 1881 and settled in Randolph, WI. Bertha's granddaughter Evelyn Grote Kaven says:

Albert & Bertha would go to the Post Office and carry mail from the Post Office to the depot in a two-wheel cart. The wheels were the size of wheels on a horse drawn buggy. Old man Jones was the postmaster at that time. They would carry the stack of mail to the depot in the A.M. It was the Milwaukee Railroad and the people of Warner called the train "The Flyer" because it went so FAST!!! It was a passenger train with the mail and they would pick up the cream cans etc. and haul the mail at 2:30 PM. They would take the sack of mail and hang in on the arm, then the train went by and the bag of mail would go into the mail car in the train. Then the man on the train would throw his bag of mail for the Warnerites and they would take it back to the Post Office.

My Grandma and Grandpa Kuhfeld did that for a long time. Then when Grandpa died in 1935, Grandma went to work for Frank & Polly Rehfeld. It was on the farm where the Fischer Quints were raised. Grandam Bertha Kuhfeld then went to live with her sister Ella Kopplin Musecamp in Bath, SD. She passed away Jan. 21, 1948. She was sitting on a chair in the living room eating an apple and she died.

She was a wonderful Grandma, always humming a tune when she stayed with her daughter Marvel Grote and Fred, my parents home. She would peel potatoes or whatever and always make us feel so relaxed in those days. My family Gary and Shirley never got to know her, Gary was born in May 1948 and my Mom didn't want me to view Grandma too long because she was afraid that it would hurt my unborn baby. What a caring Mom and Dad I had. Shirley was born three years later .........

Bertha's Obituary:

Mrs. Bertha 69, died Tuesday at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Musekamp, Bath. Funeral services will be held at the Huebl chapel at a time not yet announced with the Rev. Werner Spiegel officiating. Burial will be in the Warner Cemetery.

Bertha Kopplin was born on June 20, 1878, in Germany. When three years of age she came with her parents to the United States, settling at Randolph, Wis. When she was 15 years old the family moved to Bath. She was married to Albert Kuhfeld at Warner on June 3, 1903. They farmed in the Warner vicinity until the death of Mr. Kuhfeld in 1933. Two years later Mrs. Kuhfeld moved to Aberdeen, where she resided until a year ago when she went to make her home with her brother-in-law and sister.

Survivors are one son, Wesley Kuhfeld, Warner; three daughters, Mrs. Esther Mills and Mrs. Amelia Robinson, Aberdeen; and Mrs. Fred Grote, Mina; a brother

Herman Kopplin, Bath; five sisters, Mrs. C. A. Bower, Santa Cruz, Calif.; Mrs. B. Vandenberg, Park City, Mont., Mrs. Fred Musekarnp, Bath; Mrs. R. W. Besse, Wilson Lake, Sask.; and Mary Kopplin, Bath; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, and a grandson.

Came to US in 1885 and settled in Warner, SD. Albert's obituary:

"Albert W. Kuhfeld, well known Warner resident and former mail carrier, passed away Thursday morning at his home following a long Illness. He was 56 years of age.

"Albert W. Kuhfeld was born November 9, 1878, in Germany. When a lad of seven years he came with his parents to the United States coming directly to Warner where he has since resided. He was married to Bertha Kopplin in 1903 at Warner. Mr. Kuhfeld was a member of the Lutheran church.

"He is survived by his widow, a son, Wesley Kuhfeld of Warner, and three daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Mills, Aberdeen; Mrs. Fred Grote, Mina and Mrs. Clarence Robinson, Stratford; 10 grandchildren two brothers and two sisters, Herman

Kuhfeld of Warner; Chas. Kuhfeld, Aberdeen, Mrs. Martha Fuhrman, Mansfield and Mrs. Ralph Crabb, Delhi, Calif. His parents and two sisters have preceded him.

" The body was taken to the Huebl chapel. No definite funeral arrangements have been made pending word from relatives."

Notes for MARTHA KOPPLIN :

When Martha's parents became naturalized citizens, they believed that their 3 oldest children became naturalized, also. It wasn't until many years later and a lifetime of voting that Martha discovered that she was not a legal citizen. She went through the routine and became the citizen she had always thought she was. As things turned out, she never voted again after that. At that time, she and Charlie were dividing their time between California and South Dakota, so she let the voting slide.

Martha and Charlie came to homestead in North Dakota. Charlie spent several years working in North Dakota in the coal mine near Wilton, North Dakota. Their homestead was beside the Missouri River, which frequently flooded and changed course and washed away their land. They bought a farm further from the river, where two of their sons still live.

Charlie and Martha lived for a time on the old Eastwood place, from whence Carroll walked to school. First to the basement of the Glencoe church, then to the Lane Place now Mabel Woodland Farm and later lo a schoolhouse that was situated north and west of the John Kimball home. In 1935 Charlie and Martha and John moved to California. Melvin stayed on the farm and Carroll went wherever he could find work, until he joined the army. Part of his time in the army was spent helping to build the Alcan Highway. John also joined the army during Wotld War II.

Charlie worked in the shipyards at Mara Island during the war, living in Vallejo, California. Later they moved to Santa Cruz where Charlie spent many hours fishing from the wharf. It was while they were living here that they began coming back in the summers to visit the sons and grandchildren ..... and eventualIy stayed in North Dakota. Martha spent her last years in a nursing home in Bismarck. Charlie also died in a nursing home there.

She married (1) FORREST GORDON LEACH Bef. 1906 in SD?, son of CHARLES LEACH and LOIS LANE . He was born March 09, 1868 in Red Wing, MN, and died November 19, 1930 in Galen, MT. She married (2) BRAND " BUTCH" VANDENBERG March 17, 1928 in Roundup, Montana. He was born May 09, 1881 in Wageningen, Netherlands, and died March 28, 1961 in Park City, Montana.

Notes for ANNA EMMA KOPPLIN :

Anna and her second husband Butch Vandenburg had a pig farm in Park City, MT. They would also adopt little bum lams that had to be hand fed with baby bottles. Anna was terribly stricken with arthritis, and spent the last several years of her life in a wheelchair.

When Butch would milk the cows, all the barn cats would gather around to lap up the spills. He used to squirt them as he milked, and the grankids would giggle as they watched the cats lick the milk off themselves.

Notes for EMMA OLGA KOPPLIN :

Emma was teaching in Aberdeen, S.D. when she met Raymond Besse. Raymond had come from Canada to visit his sister whom Emma was boarding with. Emma went for a visit to Canada and ended up marrying Raymond in 1917. They lived and farmed in the Wilson Lake area until moving to Marwayne, Alberta, Canada in 1949. Ray worked on a ranch for a few years; then they moved to Kitscoy, Alberta. Emma worked for a few years at a high school dormitory in Kitscoty , cooking and looking after the students. A couple years after Raymond died (1970), Emma moved to Lloydminster, Alberta, to live in a senior's complex. Here she met and married her second husband, Albert King. Emma was known to be an excellent cook. She also enjoyed playing cards and teaching the different games to her grandchildren. Emma spent many hours sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

Notes for ESTHER MARY KUHFIELD :

Esther worked in the Tiffany Laundry in Aberdeen, SD for many, many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, SD. She used to answer the phone on Sunday's and at the Baptist Church would answer the phone and work in the nursery. Esther had her granddaughter Noel stay with her for two years. She was a very dear Aunt to many.

Esther's obituary:

"Services for Mrs. Esther Mills, 66, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church.

"She died Friday at St. Luke's Hospital.

"Dr. Harold W. Wagar will officiate and burial will be in the Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery.

"Esther May Kuhfeld was born May 31, 1902, in Aberdeen where she grew to womanhood. She was employed at Tiffany Laundry from 1949 until the time of her death.

"Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. R. F. Elaine Huger and Mrs. Gabriel Beverly Young, both of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother Wesley Kuhfeld, in California, and two sisters, Mrs. Fred Marvel Grote, Mina; and Mrs. Phil Amelia Waltman, Puyallup, Wash.

"She was preceded in death by one son.

"Friends may call at the Huebl Chapel from Sunday noon until Tuesday noon and at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:50 p.m.

"The casket will not be opened after the service.

"Relatives are requested to meet in the new chapel of the church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday."

"Lloyd F. Mills, 64, of 910 S. 11th St., died Monday morning.

"Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Huebl Chapel with the Dr. J. Harley Thompson of the First Methodist Church officiating.

"Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

"Lloyd Frank Mills was born March 1, 1901 at Coon Valley, Wis., and came to Ipswich with his family in 1908. Three years later, they came to Aberdeen, wher he had resided since. He married Esther Kuhfeld in Aberdeen on July 20, 1922. He was employed by the Milwaukee railroad and worked his way up to conductor. He married Madeline Mickey O'Donnell in Aberdeen in 1949. He retired from the railroad in 1957.

"Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Mrs. R. F. Elaine Huger, Aberdeen, and Beverly Mills, Aberdeen; four brothers, Harry, of Puyallup, Wash., Howard, of LaCrosse, Wis., and T. Kelley and Forrest, both of Aberdeen; and seven grandchildren.

The following eulogy was written by Gordon's daughter, Sheri, on the day of his death:

My dad was a builder, my buddy, and someone who always had time for me. With his hands he created doll houses, furniture, jewelry boxes and other treasures that were put together as much with the love in his heart as the nails he used to hold them together. There always seemed to be some new project in progress when my friends and I wandered into his shop...he was always busy doing something..he'd be smiling and whistling or maybe singing "Swannee River" and anyone and everyone was welcomed so long as they put things back where they belonged when they were done. Many of life's lessons were taught to me in that shop as I pounded nails and listened to his stories. There was nothing my dad couldn't build or fix.

He was fun. He joked and kidded and sang funny songs. He always brought a smile to my face and washed away any worries or sadness. He taught me to be myself and to be my own best friend. It was always OK to just be me--no matter how silly or difficult I might have been acting. No matter what activity or sport I was involved in, no matter how hard I thought it would be...my dad always had faith in me and my abilities. he showed my that to do your best is best. Because of his nurtuting I learned to believe in myself.

My dad had a heart of gold and cared deeply about those less fortunate than he. he encouraged us to always be kind and humble and give to or be of service to others when in need.

I think my dad would have wanted to be remembered for his kind disposition as well as his strength. he worked hard and provided well for his family. I will always admire his work ethic and cherish what I have learned by his example.

He loved the outdoors and spent many hours on lakes and streams fishing. We spent many weekends in the mountains camping and fishing. My dad was truly in his element there. he taught me to fish and was patient and tolerant even when I got my line tangled up and lost one of his famous "Storck-O-Rino" lures. He'd just shake his head and help me get my line back in the water.

There was a time not long ago when I was in the depths of despair, not sure if I was strong enough to deal with what was ahead of me. The phone rang that afternoon and it was my dad. he encouraged me and let me know he loved me and cared. That was really a turning point for me.

I am grateful for the many gifts he has left me with. I will miss him...
