History Dr. T. Lewald, Germany's representative on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had already approached Strauss late in  1932 with the request for an Olympic Hymn. Early in 1933, Strauss agreed, but under the condition that he be given a suitable text to set to music. Gerhard Hauptmann was asked the Committee if he would like to write the words. Initially he agreed, but the text was never delivered. After this, a competiton was held with a prize of only 1000RM, won by Robert Lubahm, who neither before not after had any fame as a poet.

quote from Text of Heiner Wajemann in CD

Strauss said, ... S wrote to S. Zweig (in December, 1934)

"I wile away the dull days of Advent with the composition of an Olympic Hymn. Yes, the devil finds work for idle hands."

S wrote to S. Zweig (in ?)

"this common lot, I, of all people, who hate and despise sport!"

etc. The poem has three verses, all of which end with the word "Olympia", whose natural rhythm supplied Strauss with his central motif.

by Robert Lubahn

Völker! Seid des Volkes Gäste, kommt durch's offne Tor herein!
Friede sei dem Völkerfeste! Ehre soll der Kampfspruch sein.
Junge Kraft will Mut beweisen, heißes Spiel Olympia!
deinen Glanz in Taten preisen, reines Ziel: Olympia.

Vieler Länder Stolz und Blüte kam zum Kampfesfest herbei;
alles Feuer das da glühte, schlägt zusammen hoch und frei.
Kraft und Geist naht sich mit Zagen. Opfergang Olympia!
Wer darf deinen Lorbeer tragen, Ruhmesklang: Olympia?

Wie nun alle Herzenschlagen in erhobenem Verein,
soll in Taten und in Sagen Eidestreu das Höchste sein.
Freudvoll sollen Meistersiegen, Siegesfest Olympia!
Freude sei noch im Erliegen, Friedensfest: Olympia.
Freudvoll sollen Meistersiegen, Siegesfest Olympia!
Olympia! Olympia! Olympia!
