皇家香港軍團(義勇軍)基本上是一支由志願人士兼職組成的部隊於1854年5月成立。當時由於克里米亞戰事導致駐港英軍人數大減, 99 名本港市民自願應徵入伍協助防衛香港。自1878年以後,成為本港一支常備志願軍。在1864年與1899年義勇軍都曾被動員協助維持治安及保衛香港。在第一次大戰期間,更成為本港唯一的軍事單位,積極負起防衛和巡邏任務。
1920年義勇軍改稱為香港防衛隊。更在1941年12月的香港戰役中與日軍苦戰,遭受最嚴厲的考驗。在動員的 2,200 名各級官兵中,有 289 名陣亡或失蹤,另有很多被俘。由於作戰英勇,義勇軍後來榮獲 19 枚勳章和 18 次傳令嘉獎,於1949年義勇軍改組為香港軍圍,成為香港防衛軍的一部份。且在1970年獲頒賜「皇家」名銜,「義勇軍」之名亦併入皇家香港軍團的名稱內。六零年代軍團改組為一輕偵察團,後經女皇批准,軍團於1971年獲頒一面偵察部隊的燕尾式軍旗。
The Royal Hong Kong Regiment ( The Volunteers )
The Royal Hong Kong Regiment, essentially a part time volunteer force were formed in May 1854 when the Crimean War led to a reduction of British military presence and 99 sitizens volunteered to defend Hong Kong. Since 1878 the Volunteers has become a permanent military force in Hong Kong. In 1864 and 1899 the volunteers were called out to help maintain law and order and to provide security to Hong Kong. During World WarⅠthe volunteers were the only military unit in Hong Kong and were actively engaged in guard and patrol duties.
In 1920 the volunteers were renamed the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps and in December 1941 they met their severest test in the Battle of Hong Kong against the invading Japanese forces . Out of the moblished strength of 2,200 all ranks, 289 were listed as missing or killed and many others became pnsoners-of-war. The services of the Defence Corps were later recongnized by the award of 19 decorations, 18 mentions-in-despatches for gallantry and good sevice, and by the award of the Battle Honour "Hong Kong" in 1957.
In 1949 the Volunteers were reformed as the Hong Kong Regiment and became part of the Hong Kong Defence Force. It was awarded, the "Royal" title in 1970 and the words "the Volunteer's" were incorporated into the Regiment's title. The Regiment was reorganized as a light reconnaissance unit and a single Guidon was presented in 1971.
The Regiment was deployed during the six months long dis burbances in Hong Kong in 1967. In 1979 and 1980 its was twice out to assist the civil authorities over the problem of illegal immigration. Since then the Regiment has played an active role in anti-illegal immigrant duties in support of the Regular Army anf the police. The Regiment also played an important role in manning temporary camp accommodation for Vietnamese boat people. This operaion at Shek Kwu Chau lasted for five months from June to November 1991.
For 141 year the Regiment has played a significant role in maintaining stability and security of Hong Kong. The Regiment will now disband in September 1995.
