Deerhunter rocks on two wheels at Bicycle Film Festival tonight

August 26, 2009 |  3:16 pm

Newhunter For the sixth year running, the Bicycle Film Festival is coming to Los Angeles with a slew of events, including art shows, an all-day street party on Heliotrope Drive at Melrose Avenue and screenings at the Downtown Independent Theater.

But for indie rock nerds like us, it’s all about “Bikes Rock!,” a concert tonight at the Center For the Arts, Eagle Rock. Headlining the show will be Atlanta’s kings of the woozy indie rock over-share scene, Deerhunter.

Led by the irrepressible Bradford Cox (also responsible for one-man side project Atlas Sound), Deerhunter shows are generally nothing less than a bona fide event. Of course, they’ll probably never be as out of control as they were on the now legendary “Cryptograms” tour, where they stunned a packed Echo with waves of deafening feedback and Cox (clad in a house dress and Patti Smith fright wig) shrieking into the microphone.

In addition to their double album, the 2008 release "Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.," Deerhunter has also dropped the “Rainwater Cassette Exchange,” a new five-song EP. Ranging from dubby atmospherics to dreamy vocal pop, it’s characteristically schizophrenic Deerhunter.

To see what a Deerhunter show is like, check out this Youtube video, which is essentially the entire show from their very psychedelic set at the Noise Pop festival in San Francisco earlier this year.
