At least 2 teens questioned in McClendons' slaying

October 25, 2009

At least two teenagers were questioned by police Saturday in connection with the murders of CLTV talk show host Garrard McClendon's parents, a source said.

The suspects, who were taken into custody Friday, were positively identified as being seen in Milton and Ruby McClendon's car, the source said.

One of the teens is from Hammond, where Milton, 78, and Ruby, 76, lived, the source said. No charges had been filed as of Saturday night.

The couple were found shot to death Monday in a Calumet City forest preserve. Their stolen Cadillac Eldorado was later found abandoned on the Dan Ryan Expy.

Garrard McClendon said Saturday that he hadn't been notified by investigators that any suspects were in custody, but he said he believes "justice will be served eventually."

"They're forgiven in my heart, whether I know them or not," McClendon said of his parents' killers.

McClendon's brother, Theo McClendon, said an arrest in the case is important, but directing the outrage of a community shocked by the slayings will be his parents' legacy.

"This will be a turning point," Theo McClendon said Saturday. "This is going to create a national debate."

Hammond police have said the killings have generated more tips than usual, which Theo McClendon attributed to his parents' standing in the community.

Their funeral, at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Munster, is open to the public.
