Alistair Overeem, Bellator champ Eddie Alvarez among DREAM.12 winners

James Thompson, introduced as Alistair Overeem's opponent on the eve of Saturday's DREAM.12 event, didn't overcome the hideous odds against him – as high as 18-to-1 against with some books – and suffered a swift, first-round submission loss to the Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.

The heavyweight bout capped today's DREAM.12 event.

The event, which also featured a victory for Bellator Fighting Championships lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, took place at Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan.

The show aired in North America on HDNet.

Overeem, now 6-0 since winning the Strikeforce belt in November 2007, easily submitted the former Cage Rage and EliteXC fighter. The Dutch striker immediately attempted a flying knee and missed – and the momentum nearly sent him out of the organization's newly debuted cage. Overeem (31-11), though, quickly engaged again and slapped on the fight-ending guillotine choke from the standing position and forced Thompson (14-11) to tap in a little more than a half minute.

Overeem, also a K-1 kickboxer, is expected to fight a couple times more in Japan before year's end before returning the U.S. to make his first-ever and long-awaited Strikeforce title defense in early 2010.

Also picking up a win at DREAM.12 and looking quite comfortable in the DREAM cage (which is expected be used once a year in favor of the traditional ring) was Alvarez, who made his first appearance since winning Bellator's eight-man tournament, lightweight belt and nearly $200,000 in purses and bonuses for the performance.

With Bellator looking to determine a challenger for Alvarez with a second-season lightweight tournament, which doesn't begin until April, the promotion allowed the Philadelphia fighter to compete overseas.

The decision looked as thought it could be a disastrous one early on. Opponent Katsunori Kikuno, lightweight champion of the DEEP promotion, frustrated Alvarez early. Alvarez was unable to get the fight to the ground, dodged an early neck crank and absorbed some body shots before the first round ended.

Alvarez (19-2), though, quickly took over in the second and dropped Kikuno (12-2-1) with a big right hand. He then nearly ended it via guillotine choke but scored a subsequent takedown and locked in the fight-ending arm-triangle choke soon after.

Also picking up victories at DREAM.12 were DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis (13-3), who scored a head-kick KO of Ho Bae Myeon (8-1) in a non-title fight; Yoshiro Maeda (26-7-2), a former WEC fighter who submitted Chase Beebe (12-5-1) and delivered the former WEC bantamweight champ his fourth straight loss; and the legendary Kazushi Sakuraba (26-12-1), who absorbed a ton of punishment before finally submitting Zelg "Little Cro Cop" Galesic (9-5) via kneebar in the first round.

The full results included:
  • Alistair Overeem def. James Thomson via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 1
  • Eddie Alvarez def. Katsunori Kikuno via submission (arm-triangle choke) - Round 2
  • Marius Zaromskis def. Myeon Ho Bae via KO (head kick) - Round 1
  • Kazushi Sakuraba def. Zelg Galesic via submission (kneebar) - Round 1
  • Katsuyori Shibata def. Tokimitsu Ishizawa by TKO (punches) - Round 1
  • Yoon Dong Sik def. Tarec Saffiedine via split decision
  • Yoshiro Maeda def. Chase Beebe via submission (rear naked choke) - Round 1
  • Kuniyoshi Hironaka def. "Parky" Won Sik Park via TKO (corner's stoppage) - Round 1
  • Tomoya Miyashita def. Keisuke Fujiwara via unanimous decision

Anyone surprised in the slightest that Overeem got the W?

Trick on Oct 25, 2009 at 11:32 am ET
Nope...but I am sure NICKHAVOC is very happy about DREAM rather then UFC.

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:20 pm ET
Damn right.

And actually, the UFC card pissed me off so much that it kept me awake long enough to watch part of DREAM.

Sup with you man...don't you like Rua?  Hes from the PRIDE days.

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 1:01 pm ET
I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on Rua.

I did however root for him against Machida.

He won that fight too.

Worst decision I have ever seen.

Wrath_ov_Kartr on Oct 25, 2009 at 1:16 pm ET
Worst. Decision. EVER.

ShakeNBake on Oct 25, 2009 at 1:36 pm ET
Very very baddd decision. I hate Machida now more than ever

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 1:43 pm ET
As do I.

If Machida was even half the Champion he thinks he is...he needs to GIVE THE BELT TO SHOGUN.

In my opinion, that is the only way to correct this injustice.

ShakeNBake on Oct 25, 2009 at 2:52 pm ET
Well id love to see that, however that is unrealistic.. I would like to see Machida saying "in my opinion Shogun was the better fighter and he did beat me at ufc-104" however that wont happen, and maybe in his own opinion he really thought he won the fight?? Although the look on his face prior to the decision did not look like the look of a winner.

Trick on Oct 25, 2009 at 3:46 pm ET
Hold you horses man...I saw Machida won.  Rematch is coming for all you Rua lovers.  live with it for the time being.

Shesh...come back to reality you all.  Machida will drop him in rematch now that he know what Rua is all about.

Dopefish on Oct 25, 2009 at 1:57 pm ET
How can you hate Machida?  He didn't score the fight.  Are you 14?  Chubby and play WoW?  Machida put his heart into that fight.  It was very close.  Very close.  I gave the nod to Shogun but watch it again with out Rogan talking and you will score it much much closer for Machida.

Fadwar on Oct 25, 2009 at 2:09 pm ET
yeah, rogan was very lopsided in that fight.  but he does love his leg/body kicks.  In my opinion this fight elevated my respect for both fighters.

ShakeNBake on Oct 25, 2009 at 2:55 pm ET
I hate him very easily, he is a coward imo. and im starting to think that you are 14, obese and do nothing else but play wow. Machida put no heart into that fight, he didnt push the pace, he got outcountered, he got beat in every category I thot. I really thot 4-1 Shogun, with rd 3 going to Machida.. and Rd 1 was very close.. so at the least 3-2 Shogun

You guys are such spazzes.  How bout staying on topic?

Dinkwizard on Oct 26, 2009 at 12:22 pm ET
Thankyou Danger, I was just thinking where can I escape the boring talk of Machida and Rua. Thought I'd come in here and talk about how I think Overeem is on steroids and how I don't think they test in Japan. Then these two meat-head are talking about UFC. The darkest day in MMA was the death of Pride. Back to Overeem, look back to when he fought Liddell at the Gran Prix. Now, I realize you can lift weights and gain muscle, but come on....he went from olive oil to Brock ya know? I think he'll get his salad tossed when he goes back to the states where they test? I wouldn't start looking for your next opponent Alistair, I'd start looking for a urine sample.

I ordered 102 and 103 and I am most definitely passing on this tonight.

I'm honestly looking more forward to DREAM.12 which will be on only a few hours after 104 is over.

CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT!

The Sakuraba vs. Galesic fight was crazy! Sakuraba shot in and went for a leg lock but wouldn't let go and Galesic hit him with some monster shots but the ref let it go and Sakuraba got the knee bar. The shots Sakuraba were taking could have easily been enough to stop the fight but I'm just glad I got to see that fight.

yeah, I think pretty much EVERY ref we see in North America would have stopped that fight like twice - crazy amount of punishment Saku took

its ashame DREAM makes there fans pay to watch these cards,   i  liked how joe daddy said the ufc's 10 best LW's  would  woop japanese ass...............most fights didnt make it out of the first round,  that show's  how many mismatches there were

armbar on Oct 26, 2009 at 1:04 pm ET
they weren't all missmatches.

Hironaka vs PARKY -

Parky had hironaka hurt in the first round winning it pretty convincingly. It wasn't until the last 2 seconds of the fight that Hironaka threw a punch that apperently broke PARKY's orbital bone, and couldn't answer the bell for the second round

Gelisic vs Saku-

Saku was getting battered with vicious GNP while desperately holding on for a leg lock. Fight looked like it could've been stopped several times then out of nowhere saku subs him with a leg lock

Beebe vs Maeda-

on paper this should've been a close fight. Not a miss match at all. however meada came out like a monster and tapped him clean

So I wouldn't say all of those 1 round finishes were miss matches. Hell Zaromskis does that to everyone. ok and the overeem fight def was a miss match but I think that was about it

Jdogg19 on Oct 25, 2009 at 10:52 am ET
I hope the UFC tries to get Alvarez in 2010 that would be sick...there could be some pretty good fights there for him

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 11:09 am ET
DREAM.12 blew UFC 104 out of the freakin water.

Delocated on Oct 25, 2009 at 11:35 am ET
Especially the main event.
I enjoyed both events for free.

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:12 pm ET
Yeah...the main event of DREAM wasn't that great...but EVERYTHING else was.

Marius Zaromskis's 3rd headkick KO in a row was something to see. I mean the guy blocked it and he STILL got KTFO.

Or how about Sakuraba's performance? Holy Moly! That was incredible!

And although Eddie Alvarez has looked better...that fight had me on the edge of my seat. Very exciting.

I'm getting ready to watch DREAM.12 again.

:)

Delocated on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:28 pm ET
That neck crank was absolutly brutal.
When he released it, Eddie neck was really f*cked up for a minute or so.
The White-Mare is my favorite welterweight anywhere.

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:40 pm ET
I know...I was like DAMNNN! after Eddie finally got out of that neck crank and was stumbling around appearing to readjust how his head fit on his neck.

It really took a lot out of Alvarez.

I was very impressed by Eddie's ability to fight through and keep pushing the action.

Watching him drop Kikuno was a punch to the face was great too. I swear I wanted him to punch that goofy smile right off his face!

But I will take watching him tap out to an arm triangle just the same.

Highly entertaining fight in my opinion.

I'm really hopeful that you didn't mean that you enjoyed the Thomson - Overeem fight, because that was awful. Dream 12 had some really good fights, but come on, that was garbage.

how would you know nick, thought you weren't going to order 104???

And if you did, please tell me how dream was better aside from paying for it and the Machida decision.

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:08 pm ET
I sawUFC 104.

And all I can say is...I'M GLAD IT DIDN'T COST ME ANYTHING.

I would have demanded a refund if I would have paid for that garbage. Seriously, that crap reminded me of when I use to order boxing PPVs back in the day.

When the shows were over...I felt robbed.

104 was full of mismatches, horrible ref stoppages, a boring main event and the single worst decision I have ever seen.

Yep...I'm DAMN glad I didn't pay.

Jimbo-Slice on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:15 pm ET

But see I don't have to do any of that.

BECAUSE I DIDN'T PAY!

iowaFightFan on Oct 26, 2009 at 9:58 am ET
Nick, I have to respectively disagree with you.

I watched both events as well, and by far think that the UFC was much more exciting.

As usual, I fast fowarded through most of the boring matches ofthe DREAM.12 event. Between the constant mismatches they put on, freak shows, and so many fighters with losing records, it seems difficult to get a decent fight from a DREAM event at times.

I will admit though, once it got to the Sakaraba fight, I was finally impressed. Sakaraba took an absolute beating, I thought for sure he was gonna get KTFO, then out of no where he pulls off the knee bar. I was throughly impressed.
He needs to no doubt retire though. He is well past his prime, and no need to see him take those kind of beatings anymore. He is a legend, always will be, and no need to tarnish that imagine.

The Eddie Alvarez fight was impressive as well. I personally dont care for Eddie too much, and was hoping ot see him get his ass whooped. It almost happened too!! That was a good back-and-forth fight. Probably the best fight of the night in DREAM.

The only other one worth mentioning was Marius Z. It was expected though, so nothing too spectacular there. It is impressive though to see a guy win three straight with high kicks.....you would think the opponents would be looking for these after this!!

The UFC card was definetly better in my opinion. The prelims on Spike were pretty good. Bader came out as a beast in that first round. Props to "Red" for surviving and taking it the distance. Bader has definetly evolved his striking from when he was on the show, and will be a force in the 205 divsion soo nenough.

Joe "Daddy" gave an impressive performance againbst a game Spencer Fisher. Once again, "The King" falls to a ranked fighter. Another small win streak put together, and then ended for him when he faces an upper class 155'er with some wrestling. Joe is now 2-0 since joining up with Jackson......excited to see whos next for him.

Neer drops his second straight fight. This one not so exciting. Tibau was happy to just take Neer down (which he did effortlessly) and basicly hold him there. Kind of a replay of the Pelligreno fight.

Yushin Okami loses finally! This puts an end to all the BullShit talk of him deserving a title shot. He got handled by Sonnen. Most Okami fans should be greatful, because if it had been Anderson Silva across the cage from him, Okami may not be amongst the living anymore!! Haha

The main event had a questionable decision, but the fight was itself was good. Lots of technical strking, and for the first time, Machida was proven to be HUMAN!! He can be beaten, and Shogun has proven that (by winning 2 rounds officially, and 3 "unofficially")

Overall, UFC was a batter card, and I think it will be many years before DREAM ever puts something together that can compete with the UFC cards. I like MMA, not freak shows.

EdoKaz818 on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:23 pm ET
I went there live and I thought it was fking great. Besides the pathetic ass Rumble fight which i really wish he would of broke his leg or something instead of fighting and that sh*tty decision in the end I was overall happy. alot of good fight on the undercard

Infact the Undercard fights were the sh*t.

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:25 pm ET
How about Mazzagatti's bone-headed decision to ruin the co-main event and stop the fight early?

EdoKaz818 on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:38 pm ET
Damn that too lol sh*t that was quite a night of fked up fight. The undercard though was quite exciting more then the maincard IMO. Pat Barry raping Hardonk was epic.

bdmcleod on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:50 pm ET
The Barry Hardonk was amazing. I've never seen someone affected by leg kicks that fast. Typically it takes 2 rounds until it's noticeable. Barry had to switch stances after like two kicks.

NickHavok on Oct 25, 2009 at 12:54 pm ET
Watch Houston Alexander's last fight against Sherman Pendergarst from Adrenaline IV if you can.

You will see just how effective leg kicks can be in that one.

iowaFightFan on Oct 26, 2009 at 10:19 am ET
That fight was a joke. Sherman was a can that was fed to Houston to get Houston a win finally.....

I loved how Sherman stood there, flat footed, and did not attempt to check the leg kicks at all. It was truely pathetic. What do you expect from Adrenaline MMA though (which makes me sad to say, being it is a bigger Iowan show), they always have the worse one sided beat downs I have ever seen (as bad as DREAM, or worse even!).

Barry/Hardonk was a hell of a fight!

You're right though. That's alot better than the best LHW in the world fighting the former best LHW in the world. Or seeing Cain Velasquez put his name up there with Mir, Nog, and JDS.

tlandry14 on Oct 25, 2009 at 3:30 pm ET
I agree that the card seemd to be full of mismatches. When all but 2 fights? Maybe 3? do not make it out of the first round than you have to wonder about the matchmaking. Overeem/Thompson? That was a joke of a matchup and we all know Zaromskis could have sleptwalked through his fight and still won it. Was thrilled to see Beebe lose again too.

iowaFightFan on Oct 26, 2009 at 1:01 pm ET
TubeKid-

Could not have said it better myself.

I had heard at one time that DREAM was supposed to be created from the ashes of PRIDE FC. I hope that was a joke.

Pride was arguabley the best MMA promotion there was at one point, even bigger than the UFC, with the deepest talent pool (look at how many Pride fighters are now the UFC's top draws).

DREAM is far from being any of those things. They put on horrible shows (speaking about talent only) and most matches are just not worth anything at all and have no impact on rankings what so ever. Constantly feeding top 10 guys cans is too common in DREAM. Of course, the main event, Overeem vs Thompson is solid proof of that.

Don't get me wrong, there are some great fights occasionally, but most of the time, it's just mismatches and freak shows.

Zaromskis' post fight interview sounded like Borat

paulpnut on Oct 25, 2009 at 2:32 pm ET
overeem is a joke and should be stripped of the strikeforce title and let fedor and rogers fight for it,anyone else agree

UFCisSHADY on Oct 26, 2009 at 1:52 pm ET
No.

I wonder if the guys that ususally keep the ropes steady or push the fighters back in the ring were, by habit, pushing each other around during the fight just to keep busy.

They were told their services were no longer needed and then they were let go.

Dream 12 was awesome! Loved the new cage, great fights, lots of entertainment, I enjoyed this more than UFC 104, Sakuraba submission was so sick, and Zaromskis is the man! Cannot wait to see the Dream/Strikeforce fights! Also Overeem v Fedor will be a war when that happens.

DREAM rules! You get everything there - karate guys, pro wrestlers, champs from all over the world and most of all KAZUSHI SAKURABA! All UFC PPVs in a bunch cannot make up for the emotional experience that surrounds each and every Sakuraba fight. The Japanese promotions are doing a show - fireworks, crazy entrances and stuff. The HDNet commentators are also way better than Joe Rogan and Goldberg. "Screaming lady, make it hot!" gotta love Mike The Voice for that. And if a UFC PPV costs 60 $ probably 60% of the footage are advertisements. I hate that "The clock's been brought to you by...", "Our tale of the tape is brought to you by..." and so on. UFC's just a money machine, while the Japanese do this as an attraction. They love the sport and do this for the fans. As an example, Jap fans want to see Aoki often. And he's fighting every two months. UFC does not care for the fans.

Zaromskis baby!!!

Dream delivered again!!!
Enjoyed it a lot more than UFC 104.
Alltho Tarec Saffiedine was robbed much worse than Shogun!!!! Damn you Asian biased judges!!!!

The Alvarez fight was great, but i must say Eddie is not yet on the level of BJ Penn.  But the guy has heart!
Sakuraba surviving Zelg's punches and pulling of a magical knee bar was awesome too.

And then ofcourse the guys that come out with jumping knees, Zaromskis and OVereem, wowie!
Zaromskis' head kicks look already sharper and faster than Crocops in his prime.
Overeem was lucky to have the new cage, if it had been a ring he surely wouldve tumbled over the ropes with his jump.
He looked like a beast, and all the whiners that say he hasnt been defending his Strikeforce title should stfu.
There was absolutely noone at his level to fight in Strikeforce, so Overeem just had to go fight in Japan and K-1
But lets hope we can see FEDOR vs OVEREEM for Wamma and Strikeforce title in 2010 ;)

Go to hell Overeem ^^^^^^^. He looked ridiculously big in the fight. He looks good but def not natural. Lets hope he can stay healthy and come over to the states and get exposed

I love the Dream 12 Event.   But i must agree the first 4-5 fights sucked ass.   The last 4 fights where great.  Except for the Alister fight.  Complete Missmatch.      I love that it was for free on HDNET.  And yeah i thought the last UFC was a complete robbery of my money.

Most of the fights were Lame descions.
