SUPER SUB Glenn Whelan secured Stoke City a famous victory at White Hart Lane as Stoke City continued their excellent start to the new Barclays Premier League season.

The Republic of Ireland international curled home a Ricardo Fuller pass in the 86th minute to give the Potters their first success at Tottenham in 34 years and only the second in their history.

The memorable triumph was their first away win of the season in the Barclays Premier League and spoiled the first anniversary of Harry Redknapp's appointment as Spurs manager.

City stay in ninth place in the table following the victory in North London, but they are now level on points with Liverpool to really put their successful start into true perspective.

What made it all the more remarkable was that the Potters lost first choice goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen just before the kick-off when he failed to recover from a stomach virus which had laid him low.

Steve Simonsen only found out 20 minutes before the kick-off that he would be taking Sorensen's place, but he played a big part in the success with a series of fine saves, particularly in the first half.

It was only the second time in 2009 that Tottenham had failed to score at home, with the other occasion being in the North London derby against Arsenal.

And a further indication of City's achievement was the fact that Manchester United are the only other team to win there this season.

Simonsen pulled off the first of his excellent saves as early as the eighth minute, a fine one-handed stop to deny England striker Peter Crouch.

The Potters had to soak up a lot of pressure in the first period and had one or two moments of good fortune to help their cause.

Aaron Lennon tested out Simonsen's reflexes with a long range drive and then full back Vedran Corluka saw his 25-yard effort crash against the woodwork.

The Potters rode their luck again in the 26th minute when James Beattie produced a fantastic goal-line clearance to deny Crouch, who was eager to make the most of the fact that he had replaced the suspended Jermain Defoe.

City's performance was epitomised by the battling qualities of Andy Wilkinson, who got his chance due to Robert Huth's suspension.

But they had their moments going forward, even when they were under considerable amount of pressure for much of the first period.

With Salif Diao highly-influential in the middle of the park, they began to carve out good chances themselves and Diao fired wide from 35 yards 10 minutes into the second half before Beattie put a close range header just wide of the target.

As the home side grew more and more frustrated, the likelihood of a City goal on the break seemed to grow in prospect.

Therefore, it was no surprise when one Fuller's excellent runs paved the way for Whelan to net the winner in the closing stages.
