Ivan Klasnic
Bolton's Ivan Klasnic celebrates his late winner against Everton

By Les Roopanarine

Bolton marked Gary Megson's second anniversary in charge with a thrilling late victory against Everton.

Chung-Yong Lee opened the scoring and Gary Cahill headed home Matt Taylor's free-kick to double Bolton's lead.

Everton hit back either side of the break through Louis Saha and Marouane Fellaini, with league debutant Lucas Neill the provider on both occasions.

But substitute Ivan Klasnic scored at the death to complete a dramatic win for Bolton.

The Croatia international's late intervention compounded a miserable week for Everton, whose 5-0 Europa League mauling by Benfica on Thursday was the heaviest defeat in their European history.

But for Bolton, Klasnic's first goal in English football since his September loan move from Nantes - and, more pertinently, the first home win of the season that it yielded - could hardly have been more timely.

Megson praises Bolton desire

Bolton had not taken three points at the Reebok Stadium since April, and their collective anxiety to draw a line under that unwelcome statistic had been apparent from the outset.

With four minutes gone the Everton defence, still nursing a lingering hangover from events in Lisbon, was reeling anew as both Tamir Cohen and Kevin Davies spurned clear opportunities from close-range headers.

Roused from their initial torpor, Everton hit back through Jo, who marked his first Premier League start since mid-September with a fine attacking display that will surely have advanced his claims to more regular inclusion.

Having forced an early save from Jussi Jaaiskelainen with a low drive, Jo captured the prevailing mood by heading wide from Dan Gosling's corner before clipping the bar with a dinked cross.

Another attacking incursion by the Brazilian saw Bolton survive a plausible penalty claim, Zat Knight bundling over the on-loan Manchester City man as he bore down on goal.

606: DEBATE

By then, however, Everton were behind, their defensive frailties exposed anew as Sam Ricketts, whose surging forays along the right flank caught the eye throughout, eluded the attentions of Tony Hibbert to centre.

Ricketts' ball found Lee in yards of space, affording the South Korean ample time to drill a low shot through a cluster of bodies and past Tim Howard, the beleaguered Everton goalkeeper.

Two years to the day since Megson's arrival at the Reebok Stadium, his side were showing further evidence of their newfound willingness to eschew the direct approach in favour of a high-tempo passing game.

Everton were soft-centred - Moyes

And ten minutes later Bolton were two to the good, Taylor floating in a free-kick for Cahill, who rose above Sylvain Distin and Tim Cahill to burnish his England credentials with his second Premier League goal of the campaign.

Trailing by two goals with less than half an hour gone, Everton must have been fearing another capitulation.

But David Moyes is nothing if not an instiller of character, and that quality was soon in evidence, Saha collecting a slotted through-ball from Neill before blasting a spectacular rising effort past Jaaiskelainen from 25 yards.

Infused with renewed belief, Everton came out strongly after the break and within ten minutes they were level, Fellaini gathering Neill's long pass before rounding Cahill and thumping the ball beyond Jaaiskelainen.

The match then began to assume a more physical edge, with Knight fortunate to avoid censure from referee Phil Dowd for an apparent stamp on Cahill.

The theme continued when Klasnic, on as a replacement for Ricardo Gardner, briefly raised concern after falling heavily under a challenge from Neill.

But it was Klasnic who was to have the final say, firing home the winner four minutes from time after Jaaiskelainen's long ball out from the back had rebounded off Neill and Davies and fallen at his feet.

It was the best anniversary present Megson could have wished for - and the kind of luck that Moyes, whose injury-ravaged side surely deserved a point, desperately needs.

Bolton manager Gary Megson:

"We asked the players to start at a high tempo and catch them on the back foot, and they did it.

"But we've also got that quality to keep going - we score quite a few goals late on.

"At 2-2, we lost the momentum and Everton gained it. But Ivan is a terrific finisher, he's got a great left foot.

"I don't think we could have had the ball drop to anybody better for us in that 18-yard box."

Everton manager David Moyes:

"We worked very hard to get back in the game, but we should never have got ourselves in that position in the first place.

"We seemed to run out of steam in the last 20 minutes, but we were poor at the back today and it cost us.

"It's not like us, we're normally tougher, but we're a bit soft-centred at the moment."
