Education, Youth & Families

Mayor Villaraigosa’s vision is to create a world-class educational system that demands the involvement of our entire community, increases achievement and opportunities for all public school students in Los Angeles and closes the achievement gap for low-income and minority youth.

  • Establish an effective and accountable management system to support direct reform efforts
  • Transform LA public schools into a high-performing system
  • Engage the greater LA community in the educational system and plans for change
  • Improve the conditions necessary for learning (e.g. safety, health)

Mayor Villaraigosa believes that education reform is the civil rights issue of the 21st century. Without a high school diploma, today’s generation will find tomorrow’s jobs to be inaccessible. Put simply, LA’s economic future depends on giving young people a strong education that prepares them for college, work, and life in an age of globalization.

That’s why Mayor Villaraigosa has made improving achievement a central priority of his administration, leading a broad-based coalition of business leaders, community groups, teachers, and parents in a campaign for fundamental reform in LAUSD.
