Pavement to Headline Primavera Fest

Plus: Vote on which bands will play Pavement to Headline Primavera Fest

This summer, the Pitchfork staffers who traveled to Barcelona for the Primavera Sound Festival came back calling it one of the best festivals they'd ever seen. Those who attended the 2009 shindig got Neil Young, My Bloody Valentine, a Pitchfork-curated stage, and the now-infamous Wavves freakout, all in one of the world's nicest cities. And there's a pretty good chance that the 2010 fest, which goes down May 27-29, might turn out even better.

For one thing, there's the headliner. The festival's website has announced that reunited indie gods Pavement will top the bill. Thus far, it's the only mainland Europe date that the band has announced.

The Dead Weather Release Live EP

The Dead Weather Release Live EP

Recorded at the ever-so-brief L.A. incarnation of Jack White's Third Man Records and Novelties that popped up in the city in August, Live From Third Man West is a new five-song/four-video digital EP from the Dead Weather that is now available on iTunes. Along with highlights from the band's debut LP Horehound, the EP features a cover of "Forever My Queen", originally recorded by doom metal overlords Pentagram. Full tracklist is below.

Continuing with the pop-up store trend, Third Man is set to open its third now-you-see-it locale at London's Shoreditch Church this Friday, October 30, only to close it a day later. Fleeting pleasures.

The Dead Weather are also set to perform at the mtvU Woodie Awards on December 4.

Midlake Return With New Album

Midlake Return With New Album

It's been more than three years since we've heard a new album from the gently rocking Texas quintet Midlake. Early next year, they'll return with album number three, The Courage of Others. The album will drop on February 2 via Bella Union (February 1 in the UK and Europe). That's the cover above, and we've got the tracklist below. Americans should be good and ready to hear a song called "Winter Dies" on Groundhog Day.

The Very Best Cancel Shows

Plus new video featuring Kano The Very Best Cancel Shows

The ridiculously joyous global party crew the Very Best have had to cancel a number of their American tour dates after singer Esau Mwamwaya ran into what their publicist calls "passport-related travel issues."

The group already had to cancel their CMJ shows, as well as L.A. and San Francisco dates. Shows in Chicago and Toronto that were planned for this week won't go down, either. They'll make it over in time for a show in Brooklyn on Halloween, as well as three East Coast dates afterwards.

Below, we've got the Very Best's revamped itinerary.

Also, the Very Best recently teamed up with British rapper Kano for a new version of their Warm Heart of Africa track "Julia". Check it out below, via the Mad Decent blog.

Pitchfork on ABC: Atlas Sound's Logos

Pitchfork writers regularly appear on ABC's World News Webcast to chat about notable albums they've recently reviewed. Previously, we saw Brian Howe on the Antlers' Hospice, Joe Tangari on Arctic Monkeys' Humbug, Rob Mitchum on Yo La Tengo's Popular Songs, Ian Cohen on the Big Pink's A Brief History of Love and the Dodos' Time to Die, Tom Breihan on Girls' Album, and Marc Hogan on Neon Indian's Psychic Chasms. This week, we've got Pitchfork Managing Editor Mark Richardson on Atlas Sound's Logos.

Video: Tegan and Sara: "Hell"

Tegan and Sara's new album, Sainthood, is out tomorrow, and their new video for "Hell" is out today. In it, the pop-rock pair set up in bright hotel rooms, play between-wall tug-of-rope, and generally have some (abstract and kinda creepy) good times. Watch it below. (Via Stereogum.)

In other T&S news, Sara Quin recently sat down for a great edition of our 5-10-15-20 feature, which you can read here.

News in Brief: Daptone Gold, Lipstick Traces, Radian, We the People Fest

News in Brief: Daptone Gold, Lipstick Traces, Radian, We the People Fest

-- On November 24, the Brooklyn-based retro-soul label Daptone will release Daptone Gold, a compilation of singles, album tracks, and unreleased joints. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, the Budos Band, and Lee Fields all contribute multiple tracks, and it'll have liner notes from Pitchfork contributor Douglas Wolk.

-- This year, Lipstick Traces, rock writer Greil Marcus's hugely influential tome of punk rock theory and shadowy history, turns 20. On November 15, Harvard University Press will publish a 20th Anniversary Edition.

-- On November 10, Thrill Jockey will release Chimeric, the latest full-length from Vienna-based instrumental post-rockers Radian.

-- The We the People festival will cram a whole mess of pissed off, politically-minded artists into Los Angeles's L.A. Center Studios this November 21. Or that's the idea, anyway. The bill includes Madvillain, Bad Religion, Suicidal Tendencies, Anti-Pop Consortium, Daedalus, and Spragga Benz.

Dark Was the Night Comp Raises Hundreds of Thousands for Charity

Dark Was the Night Comp Raises Hundreds of Thousands for Charity

Earlier in the year, 4AD released Dark Was the Night, the double-disc compilation that the National's Aaron and Bryce Dessner compiled and produced. The Dessners managed to round up contributions from a deeply impressive list of indie A-listers: Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Dirty Projectors with David Byrne, Ben Gibbard and Leslie Feist, and too many others to name. A few months later, they rounded up many of the same people for a huge benefit show at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Proceeds from both the album and the show went to the Red Hot Organization, which raises money for AIDS awareness. Today, 4AD's website reports that the album has, to date, raised £423,212-- or $668,358 American-- for the Red Hot Organization.

Jay-Z to Perform at World Series

With Alicia Keys Jay-Z to Perform at World Series

UPDATE: Because it will not stop raining in New York City, this Jay-Z/Alicia Keys World Series performance has been moved to Thursday night, according to MTV.

On the song "Empire State of Mind", Jay-Z raps, "Shit, I made the Yankees hat more famous than a Yankee can." On Wednesday night, he'll get the chance to prove that boast when he and Alicia Keys perform the Blueprint 3 track at Yankee Stadium before game one of the World Series, according to MTV. Beat that, Philly.

(Editor's note: Fuck the Yankees! Go Phillies!)

U2 Announce Another World Tour

The 360° Tour continues in 2010 U2 Announce Another World Tour

This past weekend, U2 let the world catch a free glimpse of their 360° Tour when YouTube streamed their show at the Rose Bowl live. This year's leg of that tour will wrap up this week in Vancouver, but if you liked what you saw on the YouTube broadcast, you'll get another chance to see the titanic show in person next year. On their website, the band have just announced another leg of North American and European dates-- one that'll take them from June to October.

And if you didn't see it already, last week Pitchfork talked with longtime U2 producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois about their work on U2's 1984 breakthrough album The Unforgettable Fire. Read our interview here, and check below for dates.
