Bay Bridge won't open for evening commuteThursday, October 29, 2009 (10-29) 15:40 PDT Oakland, Calif. (AP) -- State transportation officials say the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge won't open for the Thursday evening commute as crews furiously try to finish emergency repairs. More NewsEngineers spent their second full day repairing and fortifying the bridge after 5,000 pounds of steel came crashing down onto westbound lanes Tuesday. The pieces that failed were parts of major repairs done last month after state inspectors discovered a crack in an "eyebar," an important structural beam. Transportation officials still have no firm estimate of when the bridge will reopen. |
