Candidates and Nominations

Candidates are the people who stand for election. Their names appear on the ballot paper. Nomination is the process by which a person registers to become a candidate for an election. 

Nominations cannot be made before the Writ is issued. The date by which nominations must be made is specified in the Writ. This day is referred to as the ‘day of nomination’ or ‘nomination day’.

Every person enrolled as an elector for any district in the state (subject to certain disqualifications) is qualified to be nominated as a candidate for either the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council.

After noon of nomination day, the returning officer conducts a draw to determine each candidate’s position on the ballot paper. Separate draws are conducted for each Legislative Assembly electoral district and the Legislative Council.
