This is the second in a four-part series on the designers featured in Milan Fashion Week’s N-U-De New Upcoming Designers Project, which showcased international designers from Pakistan, Colombia, Russia, and India.

At the Colombian N-U-De New Upcoming Designers Project show, held on the last day of Milan Fashion Week last September, the three featured designers were out to do more than showcase clothes – they were out to promote a message.

“Vita Senza Droga,” Italian for “Life Without Drugs,” was the theme of the show, and it was in line with the Colombian Embassy’s campaign to change the country’s image and promote alternatives to lawlessness by showcasing the best of Colombian culture, arts, sports, and fashion.

Milan: best seats in the house

10/02/09 — 0 comments

When I’m seated at a fashion show, it’s usually in the back row, and the photos I snap are horrendous. The people in front make it impossible to get full-body shots, and I still haven’t fully figured out how to manipulate the functions on my camera so that the models don’t look like overexposed phantoms. See an example below, from the Aquilano.Rimondi show.

My last day at Milan Fashion Week, I decided it was time for an upgrade. At Vita Senza Droga, the New Upcoming Designer (N-U-DE) showcase of Colombian designers Isabel Henao, Beatriz Camacho, and Leal Daccarett, I forfeited my seat to snag floor space at the very top of the runway, with the photographers.

Milan: Vogue Talents

jessica_voguetalent_01Vogue Italia supplement Vogue Talent

One of my favorite things about Milan Fashion Week is being exposed to new talent. However, seeking the next big thing can be exhausting, because of the sheer number of designers exhibiting their work in shows, presentations, trade fairs, and expositions. Thankfully, Vogue Italia made my job easier by publishing Vogue Talents, a supplement to its September issue that spotlights 140 hand-picked up-and-coming designers from Italy and abroad.

Some of the most exciting designs in the supplement came from recent graduates of Italy’s prestigious fashion schools. These designers are so new to the field, I couldn’t even find information about them on the Internet. Check them out here:

Milan Fashion Week: the world’s youngest designer

When I was 14, I flirted with cute boys on the bus, experimented with too-dark lipstick, and spent a significant amount of time worshipping boy bands like 98 Degrees.

Kira Plastinina didn’t have time for silly diversions. When she was 14, she was already the head of a multi-million-dollar Russian tween fashion empire. By 15, she had opened more than 50 pink-hued Kira Plastinina clothing stores in Russia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and the United States. At 16, she debuted her high-end line, Lublu K. Plastinina, and this year, the 17-year-old presented her second Lublu collection on the second-to-last day of Fashion Week here in Milan.

Milan: a tribute to the red dress

09/30/09 — 1 comment

Black is boring. At MI Milano Prêt-à-Porter, an expo and trade fair held in conjunction with Milano Moda, red was all the rage. Il colore rosso took center stage at the expo’s Tribute to Red Dress exhibition, which featured rouge-colored creations from up-and-coming designers.

The exhibition was held by Red Dress Italia, an organization based on America’s Go Red For Women, which aims to educate women about cardiovascular diseases and encourage healthy lifestyles. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women worldwide, claiming 8.6 million female lives each year. “This isn’t a red dress,” posters and fliers proclaimed. “It’s a red alarm.”

Milan: as Italian as it gets

09/30/09 — 0 comments

The day, my second at Milano Moda, kicked off with a late bus, crazy traffic, and a disastrous fashion malfunction — think skin, and lots of it. Pissed, I skipped out on the morning’s Roccobarocco show for an emergency shopping trip to the streets around the Duomo, which are packed with cheap, trendy fashion chains like Mango, Bershka, and Promod. I settled on a cute striped number and, after gulping a caffè macchiato, set out on the day’s mission — to absorb as much of Fashion Week as humanly possible.

I started at the Laura Biagiotti show, held at the Piccolo Teatro Studio, in the center of the city. Laura is about as Italian as Italian gets. Her simple, elegant designs have long been coveted by the women in my family, whose eyes lit up when I told them about the invite. True to form, I lusted after the ensembles in the new collection as well. The clothes were, to put it simply, gorgeous — sophisticated and stylish and everything I’d expect from one of Italy’s classic female designers. One ensemble in particular — a silver gemstone-encrusted jacket paired with voluminous satin harem pants — was so breathtaking, the audience burst into enthusiastic applause.

Milan: fare la bella figura

09/29/09 — 1 comment

Milan Fashion Week
Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010

Growing up in a family of stylish Italian women, I learned early on the importance of fare la bella figura, or cutting a fine figure. The power of neutrals, the magic of good tailoring, appreciation for a fine leather bag — all are style secrets that make Italian women some of the best-dressed in the world. This week, the Italian obsession with fare la bella figura is on display during Milano Moda Donna, also known as Milan Fashion Week. Since my travels have taken me to Italy on a family visit, I couldn’t resist taking a peek.
