FlinxTranscendent.jpg

Thirty-seven years. The series is older than the characters.

In many ways, Flinx and I have grown up together, though I’m aging twice as fast as he is. On the other hand, I don’t have the fate of the galaxy resting in my hands, as Flinx does in FLINX TRANSCENDENT. My choices are easier, though helping him with his is as difficult as ever. That’s because I wanted his maturation, from street thief to adventurer to reluctant and seriously conflicted possible savior, to be as believable as that of an actual person. He has doubts, he has trouble with love, and more than anything else he just wants to be left alone.

Life, unfortunately, doesn’t leave us alone. Flinx the hermit would make for a pretty dull tale, so I’ve placed him in far more dangerous and troubling situations than the character ever would himself. If I met him in a dark alley he’d probably sic Pip on me, and I wouldn’t blame him. But I love the guy, though I wouldn’t trade places with him for all the useful pharmaceuticals on Drowning World. Being a hero is a tough business. Those who want to be heroes usually wind up dead. Flinx is a hero, but he has no martyr complex. Given the choice he’d rather head off in the other direction. Throughout the course of the series he’s certainly given it a try on more than one occasion. Unfortunately for him, at heart he’s too moral, too much of a decent human being, to run from responsibility. Not on his own behalf, but because of the friends he values and loves. That’s who, ultimately, he’s grudgingly willing to sacrifice himself for.

And that is what makes a hero.

I bet Skynet disagrees with that litany!

May 21, 2009 will see the release of Terminator: Salvation, the fourth movie in the popular Terminator series and the hope of Warner Bros. to revitalize the franchise after the disappointing Terminator: Rise of the Machines. The early trailers have shown a dark movie, set in 2018, where mankind has fallen to the machines and its only chance of survival is in the mind and heart of one man—John Connor. The movie appears to weave an interesting story amidst more intriguing human dilemmas: What does it mean to be human? How much can we lose before we lose our humanity entirely? Can a machine ever be human?

The movie looks great! Or least to me it does…

But there are several book tie-ins, being created by Titan Books, that I think might be great as well, a means to delve even more into those darker aspects of ourselves and the story itself.

Timothy Zahn, of Star Wars fame, has written Terminator Salvation: From the Ashes, the authorized prequel to Terminator: Salvation. Anyone who has read Zahn’s work knows he is a fantastic writer, loves science fiction, and he probably jumped at the chance to work in this all-important series. The prequel will be published in mass market paperback on March 17, 2009!

foster-terminator.jpgAlan Dean Foster, another great writer who has dozens and dozens of novels, novelizations and short stories, has written the novelization to Terminator: Salvation. As with most novelizations, Foster will most likely be allowed to delve into elements of the story the movie simply cannot cover, truly getting into the mind of John Connor and friends. The mass market paperbook will be released on April 28, 2009, almost a month before the movie hits theaters!

Titan Books has also put together two other Terminator tie-ins: Terminator Salvation: The Movie Companion, which chronicles the making of the film with interviews and commentary from the cast and crew, and The Art of Terminator Salvation, another book release that reveals the movie’s intricate creative design, production art and the computer-generated imagery that create the breathtaking vision of the Terminator universe’s violent, dystopian future.

So, for all of you Terminator fans out there, it is a good time to be alive!
