Ben Rothwell and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic likely to meet at UFC 110

A heavyweight clash between Ben Rothwell (30-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (25-7-2 MMA, 2-3 UFC) is likely to take place in February at UFC 110.

The matchup was first reported by Sherdog.com, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has confirmed with sources close to the event that the fight has been discussed as a possibility but not signed.

Although not officially announced by the UFC, UFC 110 is expected to take place Feb 21. The event, which takes place at Acer Arena, marks the UFC's debut in Australia.

A middleweight bout between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama could take the card's main-event slot.

Rothwell, a former star of the now-defunct International Fight League, signed with the UFC earlier this year and made his promotional debut in a TKO loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 104 in October. Including a loss to Andrei Arlovski in July 2008 at "Affliction: Banned," Rothwell has now dropped two of his past three fights. The skid followed a career-high 13-fight win streak the Miletich fighter posted from 2005 to 2007.

Filipovic, meanwhile, returns to the octagon following a second-round submission loss to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 103 in September. Filipovic, a former star of PRIDE Fighting Championships, made his UFC debut in 2007 with a TKO win over Eddie Sanchez. However, he then suffered back-to-back losses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo, and he then left the UFC to compete in Japan, where he went 2-0 before returning to the UFC with a controversial TKO win over Mostapha Al Turk (the referee failed to see Filipovic's illegal, but accidental, eye poke).

Following the latest loss, UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie.com Filipovic might be dropped by the organization. Rumors of a potential retirement, partially spurred by "Cro Cop," then surfaced. However, it appears the Croatian fighter will enter the cage at least once more.

I thought CroCop retired?

He can do nothing else. He can never retire.

coreymb on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:07 pm ET
huh?

Crotian Parliment? Anti-terriosm task force??

One or the other will be his job when he is retired from fighting-even though he's well off to not have to work ever again most likely-I remember him stating he will go back to one or the other after he hangs em up.

JEWjitsu on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:12 pm ET
This cro-cop fights like cro-crap...

coreymb on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:16 pm ET
And that tends to happen to all the greats sooner or later. Some just retire in time before they go on a big downfall from the top. Mirko just loves fighting so much it's hard for him to officially quit for good.

This guy averaged almost 5 fights a year his entire career if you include k1.

JustMe on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:32 pm ET
CroCop needs to bring his game or Ben will take him down and GnP him.

coreymb on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:47 pm ET
Yeah most likely.

Mirko does have good takedown defence but does not have takedown skills. That was a huge problem for Rothwell against Cain. He won't have to worry about that in this match.

I'm still waiting for Mirko to finish with a headkick and then just hang em up..what better way to go out! It's becomming more wishful thinking than anything though!

JustMe on Nov 05, 2009 at 5:05 pm ET
Same here...I want CCop to end his career with his signature kick.
I want him fight Randy or relive Pride days vs NOG again.

thisfightismine on Nov 05, 2009 at 5:36 pm ET
This fight is awesome!

I love how an average heavyweight bout in the UFC (such as this) could be an end-of-the-year blowout show for almost any other organization.

And some say the UFC doesn't have the best heavyweight division in the world. Pfffffff!

brentwilliams2 on Nov 05, 2009 at 6:09 pm ET
The only reason that it could make a good fight in the UFC or out of it is purely name recognition.  Nobody expects Crocop to actually fight well.  So is that how you rate the UFC's heavyweight division?  Because an over the hill Crocop is fighting in it?  That's just crazy...

I'm not saying that the UFC doesn't have the best HW division overall, but using Crocop as part of the reason is just ludicrous.

iowaFightFan on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:49 pm ET
I would guess Ben stands and tries to knock him out. I don't think Ben will take him down.

I am a pretty big fan of Ben Rothwell. Represents Militech, which obviously gives me a sense of pride, but his non-existant ground game will prevent him from going far in the UFC. If he only fights guys like Cro-Cop or Chieck Kongo or Paul Buentello, he will probably do okay, but as Cain showed, a good wrestler will just handle him.

As long as Ben has been in the game, and coming from a camp with TONS of top level wrestlers, I would have thought Ben would have a good ground game by now!

rush100 on Nov 06, 2009 at 1:46 am ET
Wow!  thats a good fight for cro-cop.  I think the UFC is giving him someone they think he will beat!!!  Lets face it, Rothwell and cro-cop are not on the same level.  Even the "dos santos" cro cop will beat rothwell handily!  Al-turk style!

Don't know y people say that cro-cop retired, he has been telling the media that he intended to finish his 3 figth deal with the ufc!!

After the win over rothwell.....Maybe a Couture VS cro-cop would be a good last fight for the cop....

girdaj on Nov 06, 2009 at 3:07 am ET
This is actually a good matchup...for both guys...kinda...

I feel that CroCop looked better than ever in his last fight...

He was just outmatched in every aspect...

Junior DoSantos has better kick boxing credentials...Doesnt he?

Good Jits and much younger and bigger...

CroCop did a lot better than I expected too...

CanadianCrippler on Nov 05, 2009 at 5:13 pm ET
Ben has a huge, hard head. Not impossible to knock out, but wont be easy. Cro Cop is going to need Ben to gas hard so he can win on points. Leg kicks could do the trick though, but crocop better be pulling the trigger for this fight.

Jimbo-Slice on Nov 05, 2009 at 11:24 pm ET
If Cro Cop losses again he may very well kill himself.  That would suck to no end.

ShogunWasRobbed on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:39 pm ET
Cro Cop's head kicking KO days are over, unfortunately.

HooDster66 on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:17 pm ET
I'm hoping for a classic head kick by Cro Cop... he's due for one.  He should win this fight but if he starts pushing Rothwell away being content on losing a decision then deciding to quit .... it might high kick my Tv (just to get my fill).

Lencazo415 on Nov 05, 2009 at 3:59 pm ET
Rothwell just had a HORRIBLE showing his last fight with that being said Crocop's last fight was very much the same....IF Crocop comes in like he did vs Santos HE WILL GET KO'd Rothwell is not scared to go for the KO against a punching bag. Rothwell does not have to worry at all about the takedown so he will be extremely happy and possibly more confident coming into this fight.

"Wankers" huh?

I'm willing to bet either one of these "wankers" would mop the floor with you.

Cro-Cop has had some great fights. His time has passed, and he is no longer relevant among the sport's elite.....but don't count him completely out yet.

Same goes for Rothwell. He is younger, but has a lot of experience. He is a very good striker. With a good ground gaem, he oculd have been a  top contender. Reality is though, if he hasn't learned the ground game at this point in his career, he probably isn't going to.

coreymb on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:05 pm ET
Mirko wants to fight. He said after his loss to Dos Santos(and recent losses) made him want to hang himself and he said he was going to get help to get straight. He said it was hard not being able to fight the way he once had and wants to atleast attempt getting back on track by finishing out his UFC contract. He did hint if his final fights don't go well it's probably all over for him as a fighter.

The guys a legend and will always be known as one of the best pure strikers but he just can't pull the trigger anymore. He dosn't owe anything to anyone or himself but yet he loves fighting and wants to fullfill his contract so I give him respect for that.

gavdes1327 on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:07 pm ET
totally agree cro cop walks around at 220 when some light heavyweights walk around at 230 or 240. i think cro cop and kimbo should be at light heavyweight.

coreymb on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:20 pm ET
Mirko typically comes to weigh ins around 224-226. He walks around much more than that.

He is at the tail end of his career and people are saying he should move down now?! He has defeated some of the best heavyweights the sport can offer. I don't think moving down is/was ever a consideration with him. He simply is not the same Cro-Cop anymore and that is easly apparent.

rush16 on Nov 05, 2009 at 6:34 pm ET
LOL its halarious how some many people on this site think all fighters are magic human beings who can drop 20 or 30 pounds like nothing. Like you said Cro Cop is much older and is almost at the end of his career, theres no way in he'll he's going to kill himself to make 205. And why do so many people think Kimbo can drop down to 205, the guy is f*ckin huge!!!
As for this fight, I like it alot even though Cro Cop might be done and Rothwell got destroyed in his last fight, still could end up being a sick fight, remember what everyone was saying about Cotoure vs Big Nog and that fight was one of the best of the year. Im rooting for Cro Cop here, he needs a win badly and I felt pretty bad for the guy because how depressed he was after the Dos Santos fight, I mean Dos Santos is a beast so Cro Cop shouldnt sweat it that much. No clue who wins though, still ill pick Cro Cop based on striking credentials.

Delocated on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:05 pm ET
Mazzagati sux but he gave this guy the benefit of the doubt about 3 times in
that fight before he stopped it.

Ben was not able to dent Arlovski's paper chin
so Mirko should have no problem with Ben.

Dos Santos is just a f*cking beast.

If Crocop loses against this can, he should retire for good.

IronJawJake on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:08 pm ET
+1, but will Ben get Mirko down, cuz if so, he can beat him.

grim_reaper on Nov 05, 2009 at 11:58 pm ET
Rothwell will have a sizable advantage if he gets him down as he will be like 275 at fight time.  Arlovski was a dead fish once Ben got him to the ground and Mirko is about the same size and level of ground game.  Mirko needs to come out like he wants it and see if he can end it.  Rothwell will tower over him and I am guessing will try to weigh on Cro Cop early.  Cro cop is good at defending that but my guess is that Rothwell will go to the knees early if he can and see if Mirko can defend them which might get Cro Cop running a bit too much which will be boring.

I don't know, maybe they will just stand there and swing until one of em drops...but I don't see it as Rothwell has a lot to lose.

TheGrandWizard on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:06 pm ET
I'm surprised that Cro Cop is fighting again and I'm a bit surprised that Rothwell is getting another fight in the UFC. I don't really understand Cro Cop's motivation for accepting this fight if the report is accurate. Then again he did fight Al-Turk, so perhaps he's just looking for a relatively easy payday. Even if Cro Cop loses he probably won't take too much damage. I understand Rothwell's motivation. Beating Cro Cop is a feather in anyone's cap. I'm not really looking forward to this fight, but if it's happening then there's not much that I can do to prevent it. Those are my initial, rambling thoughts.

CanadianCrippler on Nov 05, 2009 at 5:18 pm ET
Im not surprised Ben is still there. They gave him a very tough challenge for his first fight.

Also, Ben can absorb tremendous punishment, which means exciting fights of watching HW's beating on him constantly, which means he has punching bag value. Look at Cabbage,...he was a garbage fighter, but his chin gave him many UFC fights.

IronJawJake on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:06 pm ET
Glad Mirko might give himself one last shot, Jr. only became a top contender after beating him anyways.  But I have a feeling Ben won't be a pushover, and he will probably try his hardest to take Mirko down, but overall I like this fight!....I am going to predict Mirko by TKO rnd. 3.

abe0511 on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:06 pm ET
After watching the countdown to UFC 104, I think there are few fighters who are as likable as Ben Rothwell. He's a real, down to Earth, regular guy and I would like to see him get some wins over some top contenders and I think now is the best time for him or any up and coming hw to fight Cro Cop.

McDiggler on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:08 pm ET
I'm thinking this is a way for the UFC to add names to cards when all of their fighters are pulling up lame with injuries. Keeps people buying the PPV's. I don't mind seeing Cro Cop, he was my favorite fighter for such a long time. I think he has a chance against Rothwell. Rothwell is not that fast and he's easier to hit the Do Santos. I'll pick Cro Cop 2nd rd (T)KO.

I_Miss_PRIDE on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:11 pm ET
:) nice to see ufc give the man another chance. i would have hated to see him go out like that. (i thought cro cop was 2-3 in the ufc not 1-3) $0$0 $0 $0$0 $0

BrassJunkie on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:13 pm ET
If Rothwell shows up to fight the man and not the name I'm pretty confident he will win this fight. Cro-Cop is one of MMA's biggest legends and 5 or so years ago he would kick Rothwell's head off but father time has caught up with Cro-Cop so Big Ben should realize that, wind up, and stomp Cro-Cop into retirement once and for all..

FIGHT THE MAN AND NOT THE NAME BIG BEN AND YOU GOT THIS!!

Every time I see Cro Cop now I keep thinking I will see the old Mirko ready to prove himself as a legitimate heavyweight contender....but always get let down, Im even still thinking he will at this fight, I think its the fact I just cant bare to watch Mirko looking so washed up and barely any desire to compete. He said he went to get help after the JDS fight, I hope his head gets right and his "wanting to kick someone's head off" part of the brain wakes up. Hate to see a legend go out the way he is

The_Eyceman on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:14 pm ET

edosama1983 on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:16 pm ET
Ben's problem is he's slow and he have no take down defense..

It was sad watching him in his corner after round 1 asking "how do I stop the takedown"

I think Cro Cop wins if he can throw punchs.

snakechamer on Nov 05, 2009 at 4:25 pm ET
Mirko has fades but he's still dangerous. Rothwell will only win if a mentaly weak Mirko shows up. Nothings that I've seen from Rothwell has impressed me. His record is packed with victories over low level guys. Arvlosky and Cain are the only top level fighters he's fought. He lost both. Cain beat him up pretty bad.

I thought Cro Cop retired also? If not thats cool, its a pretty good match-up. Honestly i think Cro cop was too hard on himself after the loss to Cigano. I mean he went three rounds with that monster and no one else had been able to. I think Rothwell will be his punching bag in this one.

International Card period Wandy vs. Sexyama both way bigger sells overseas Crocop way easier to sell a load of Crocrap to Austrailian's than us Rothwell he needs a win as bad as Mirko let's hope it's exciting. You can all but guarantee George Stiroulopus the Aussie will be on the Main Card as the first fight his fights are always exciting wouldn't be suprised to see one of the brits fight if they win they're next fight Wilks if he beats Brown or Pearson if he wins.

You know, for someone you don't like, you sure seem to think about him (Mr. Havok) a lot.  I mean, I can honestly say that when I'm by myself (on the computer or otherwise) I do not sit around thinking about other posters from this site.  It's especially odd that you bring him up in a conversation that requires you to reach so much...  This article has nothing to do with fighter pay, rival organizations, Dana White, or anything else that is usually so central to those Havok-filled threads we're all familiar with.  That means that it's not like something in the article reminded you of something he said or anything...  In fact, it means that he's just on your mind, and so you made a desperate attempt to involve him in another conversation.  I have a hard time believing that his presence on the site bothers you when you try so hard to get your NickFix.

(And for the record, I'm no NickHavok defender...  In fact, more often than not, when I find a thread where I think he's being a dumb-dumb, I stop paying attention and go find something that doesn't bother me.  Still, although I may not agree with his opinions most of the time, I am truly amazed by his ability to create this weird cult of detractors around himself.  It must be weird knowing that at any given moment there's a good chance that several complete strangers from around the country are just sitting around thinking about you.)

I agree some of these posters are embarassing themselves looking for Nicks approval or looking like retards by posting
"Havoc is a joke" after every post he makes.
It's tiring.
I find Nick is probably one of the only posters I find myself having intellient discussion with whether I agree with him of not.

i thought mirko would of went back to japan to fight by now, where everybody would kiss his ass. i give him credit for stepping up to the plate, unlike fedor. but it's way past the time for him to retire at this point. he just doesn't have the tools to compete with the new breed of young fighters. once you get past the head kick, what does he have left?  kind of sad really.

phxaz on Nov 05, 2009 at 7:24 pm ET
Cro Cop verbally submitted in the 3rd round not the 2nd.  Also, Cro Cop won the 1st round against Dos Santos IMO.  He is not done.  He will change camps for this fight and destroy Rothwell.  My last thought is a "Living Legends" card where Couture fights Henderson at LHW and Cro Cop fights Big Nog, how sweet would that be!

I think this will be a good fight. Sadly this is only because Cro Cop's skills seem to have slowly faded over time.  I totally hope we see the old Cro Crop but I think those days are over.  I thought he had a shot at Dos Santos but honestly I had money on CroCop and I knew he had lost after the first round.  He almost looked a little scared or maybe confused in what approach to take against Dos Santos.

Well, I am a bit surprised at this as I think like most that Cro Cop would probably hang em up.  Not sure what he has to gain here other than monetarily and that is ok with me.  Certainly he does not still think he will ever contend in the current HW division with all the guys that are in front of him as he would be looking at like 2 years down the road at best.

It will be interesting to see how this fight plays out.  You have Mirko who really was doing ok in the Dos Santos fight although he was perhaps a bit too passive early and I think it was part of his plan to take Dos Santos deep but backfired when the kid did not fade in the third and he then subsequently got rocked by those knees and the wheels came off.  Then you have Rothwell who was an utter disappointment in the Velasquez fight and even though the fight was stopped prematurely I don't think he had a snowballs chance in hell of winning as while Cain showed he still has no power, he does have plenty of stamina and it was just gonna eventually end in a decision for him after applying a 15 minute one-sided beatdown anyway.

I am interested in this matchup, more out of curiosity than anything.

I can not believe people are counting Cro Cop out, the man is a legend and deserves more respect. I would never count him out and believe, I mean I know, that he will win this fight.

Both are coming off fights that did not make them look so good, but the legend that is Mirko will pull this one off easy.

I don't see the head kick happening either."Cro Cop" chops Rothewell down with leg kicks and then a body kick a la Heath Herring en route to a TKO GNP win. Then give CC Buentello should he make it past his next opponent.
