  1. David Knox says:

It is partly more entertainment choices, fragmenting, Pay TV, internet -but it is also a different measuring system pre 2001.

  2. bigkev says:

Very worthy comment about the ratings figures a decade ago. In the year 2000-2001, shows like Popstars, Friends, Who Wants to be a millionaire, Blue Heelers etc. were all rating around the 2 million mark each week. The million mark was a death sentence for a show, but now the figures have nearly halved across the board. While channel seven is a clear winner, all networks must be worried, especially so many ‘cliffhangers’ and ‘winners’ have been announced this week with dismal attention to all. Masterchef, Hey Hey Its Saturday (Wednesday) and Packed to the Rafters have been the only shows to create a buzz all year. What are the reasons. Pay TV? or has the standard of shows dropped of late. Or are we, as Australians just not watching TV as much? I’m not sure what the answer is…..

  3. Allie says:

Solid finale performance for Celebrity MasterChef. 1.3M is quite respectable, considering the series did not have the addictive quality of the original MC. Worthy experiment, but I doubt if Ten will repeat it, as I think continually diluting MC would be a great mistake.

Nine News tanked badly last night, whoa, 965K, that is shameful. Awful numbers for 7pm Project and John Safran Race Relations. Ouch!

  4. Jed says:

White Collar was great last night. Very good show. Loving Matt Bomer too, heard a lot about him, good to be able to see the show now too.

Not good ratings for City Homicide finale at just 1 mil. What they should do is wait til Bones season finishes next year and put City Homicide on Sunday to replace Bones.

  5. bettestreep2008 says:

Wow – the Celeb MC finale topped the ratings in what turned out to be a very competivie night.

And boy do I have egg on my face when my earlier prediction came true!

Months ago I joked that Nine will put repeats of 2.5 men up against MC and will win – and they almost did!

And regardless of what one thinks of this show – isn’t it sad to see Threeepisodes all rate over 1m and in the Top 10!

If one then adds a Repeat of Border Security also in the Top 10 – and one must conclude that Seven and Nine are being very very lazy with the final ratings week programming.

But if lazy uninspiring and unoriginal programming reaps great ratings for these 2 stations – then one can only blame lazy viewers for allowing them to get away with this!

  6. ryan says:

I gotta say holly crap i loved white collar!! great start and great finish, had everything aswell and cant wait for next weeks ep, just hope it got an ok number. Also ten should give rachel finch a job she has got a great personality and i rekon would do well co hosting or hosting a show

  7. David Knox says:

A better measure is 2001 figures which used the same OzTAM ratings as we have now. But yes, 1.2m is now considered a solid performance.

  8. ryan says:

i was reading an article which im sure some of you have seen but i will say it anyway cause its funny, back in the 1999 the movie the castle got 2.46m, getaway got 2.17m movie mission impossible 2m and who wants to be a millionaire 2.23m. Boy have times changed lol

  9. Goonies says:

With all the hype about PTTR I was expecting Masterchef finale ratings.

Is 2m for the finale of one of the most popular (holds back vomit) shows on tv really that great? Wasn’t the program getting 1.8 / 1.9 throught the year anyway?

And before you all tell me to change the channel and not bag it out – I don’t watch it but it is hard to escape it!!

  10. Goonies says:

    Thank you fellow NCISers :)

  11. Harry says:

TEN shouldnt have advertised a New episode of NCIS at all during the week then. I was happy that I was going to be seeing 7.08 ‘Powerdown’ last night but a repeat came on instead. Lucky I had not seen the repeat that was aired last night so the ep was ‘new’ to me. Well Done to PTTR, Im sure it was thoroughly deserved. (I dont watch it)

  12. kevin martin says:

Great figures for the ABC News in Sydney. It outrated all other channels reports.

  13. David Knox says:

Jed go here don’t scroll too far.

  14. Jed says:

I hate my dvd recorder. Bloody set the timer to record Survivor at 1.30 and it bloody didn’t work. So not only did i miss Friday’s episodes but i’ve missed last night’s as well. It was so much easier when they had the repeats on Wednesday at 1. Don’t suppose anyone can give a quick recap of the 2 eps last night?? Even though i already know who the final 3 are i still wanna know what happens.

@Ruth, i still think it was a repeat, but back in the day when i didn’t have a dvd recorder, i used to wat PTTR which meant i couldn’t watch NCIS. So i’ve missed a few eps. So i’m thankful for the repeats.

After watching Masterchef last night i thought i’d check and see where i could buy a croquembouche. $265 for a croquembouche. Yeah no thanks.

  15. Craig says:

David can you clarify why/how Seven is airing the next episode of FlashForward s01e10 “A561984″ before the US?

  16. ozgeek says:

@Gonnies – not harry or ryan but an NCIS fan

Current US shedule is: 7.09 Child’s play – starts in an hour, two weeks of repeats then 7.10 Faith on December 15th. They then have a break but have finished filming the 150th episode due to air next year where Robert Wagner plays Tony’s father. Our next season 7 episode should be 7.08 Power Down but my online TV guide is showing ‘White Collar’ at that time and the channel ten site has a blank in the ‘Next NCIS Episode’ box.

  17. Allie says:

I had no idea Masterchef was on last night. How annoying!! Who got through to the finale this evening? I thought PTTR would rate higher, given the non-stop cavalcade of hype, though 2M is very good, so Seven must be thrilled with that. I don’t watch PTTR myself, so can’t comment on it.

  18. Craig says:

Even on re-run NCIS did great against the Rafters final.

So I guess there are no more new NCIS for the year then?

  19. Rutzie says:

Great season finale of PTTR last night. It also gave Private Practice a boost aswell which would be pleasing for Seven. Seems as though Ten are auditioning possible new hosts for The 7PM Project with a guest host week. I think Wil Anderson is hosting tonight which should be interesting. Judging by those numbers for Celebrity Masterchef, Ten might be a bit worried about the 2 hour finale tonight.

  20. Ruth says:

@Jed. Pleased you mentioned that you hadn’t seen the NCIS ep from last night, as i hadn’t seen it previously either and I watch NCIS every week.

  21. Kiera says:

itunes is in real time, meaning that if someone buys it now the charts will be updated.

Aria charts are for the prior week and take into account all sales of singles/albums on itunes, bigpond etc.

In Australia, the Aria charts are the official music chart.

So Stan Walker is not Australia’s number 1 for this week, maybe next week after a full week of sales.

    Hope this clears everything up.

  22. Jed says:

@Harry, the tv guide had it as a repeat here. I hadn’t seen that episode anyway so i was fine with it.

Hey David, GO! website has finally removed that pic showing the final three. But it didn’t do it straight away because i checked a few days after myself and you mentioned it to them and it was still there. I wrote another comment yesterday and they have now finally removed it.

  23. ryan says:

@ harry: maybe they listened to us bloggers about putting on fake finales which they advertised it as later last week. although lie to me is a fake finale 2 and thats still going ahead

  24. Harry says:

Well Ten stuffed up tonight.. where was the new ep of NCIS tonight? They promoted it and showed a repeat.

  25. Kyall says:

Oh please God tell me that this means Channel Nine has Finally ran Two and a Half Men into the ground ! :D

  26. Jed says:

@ryan. iTunes is just a portion of download sales. There’s bigpond, Yahoo, ninemsn, JB HI-FI, Optus, Chaos Music. And then there’s physical sales as well, so #1 on iTunes doesn’t mean everything.

  27. jjreed says:

Man Vs Wild is the best thing on TV, Bear Grylls wears a really nice Bremont watch as well!!

Flash Forward, you ain’t Lost. Premise is paper thin and it’s already getting boring, should be a single season only show.

  28. catherine says:

two and half men actually came i 3rd with the 7:30 edition in melbourne. That’s a huge suprise. hamish and andy was very funny last night. I hope they don’t move flashfoward. Im actually still enjoying it and last nights was good except for Bryce’s sad news. Next year they should move either cput criminal minds on at 8:30 and put flashfoward on after or put flashfoward on after city homicide or packed to the rafters. Im still missing Mercy.

  29. ryan says:

@ goonies: nah ncis season 7 finale is may 2010, we are only up to ep 8 and there are 24 eps

  30. ryan says:

everyone tune into the fake season finals tonight! lol

  31. Goonies says:

I have an NCIS question – ryan & Harry – are the US having a season finale this year that we are missing out on?

  32. Tbone23 says:

Just loved last night Big Bang Theory.
Happy that Nine will air a new episode wednesday.

  33. ryan says:

ok so i could be wrong saying stand song has gone to number1 in aus, but to make it number 1 on itunes it pretty big

  34. ryan says:

go to bandit fm, or itunes store and stand song is number 1 and tik tok is num 2

  35. Jerome says:

@Craig 7 is airing the Dec 3 episode next week before the US airing.

  36. Johnson says:

FlashForward dropped one million! Well, it was one of the biggest ratings hope for the ABC network in the US, it has been given a full season, and has already been sold to more than 30 countries. Could turn out to be a very expensive flop.

  37. Dino says:

Huge drop for 2.5 Men. Down over 200k from last week!

  38. Craig says:

I notices Seven last night said next weeks FlashForward would be the final for the year, but in the US a new ep will air Dec 3.

  39. Vinnie says:

Re: the breaking up of the Australian Idol Finale.

I’m not saying it’s right, but the other networks make a practice of this as well, particularly 7.

  40. David Knox says:

Due to the late switch that Nurse Jackie figure will be an overrun, actually TEN Late News.

  41. ozzzie says:

man vs wild is just growing week after week. it is now the most popular sbs show after topgear and the ashes cricket. monday 8.30 is probably the most competitive timeslot of the week with all 5 networks offering something decent to their chosen demographic.
and nurse jackie getting 450k at 11.30pm is very impressive. it shows how loyal fans of that show are. ten should leave it at late nights nxt year as earlier slots would yield a similar figure.

  42. Brodie says:

With some decent competition from Ten 2.5 Men falls dramatically. The Apprentice fails for its finale, as it has for the whole season. FlashForward is fast becoming a flop, expect to see it at 10.30, if not migrating to 7 TWO next year.

  43. BigKev says:

Just to let you know…. Stan Walker does not have the number one so of the week as yet….. the number one song is still Ke$sha ‘Tik Tok…. Maybe next week he will be, but just clarifying any misconceptions out there.

If you need the official documented proof –

Please, no more nine or ten bashing….. they are simply just tv networks who screen entertainment, good or bad. It really boring that people chant for seven like its a football team.

  44. Lewis says:

And FlashForward finally drops below the 1 million mark.

What’s the bet it ends up on 7TWO sometime next year before Season 1 finishes?

  45. Allie says:

Not an overly hilarious new episode of 2.5 Men last night, nowhere near as hysterical as last week’s, but damn, Big Bang Theory was funny last night!!! I would have thought the final episode of the Apprentice would have got higher ratings, but it is probably Nine’s most successful reality series after Farmer Wants a Wife. I heard Mark Bouris interviewed on local radio here in Sydney yesterday, and he dropped heavy hints that there will be a second series and that he will front it.

  46. Jed says:

Thank god next week will be a lot easier. Kinda difficult Monday nights with Flashforward, Criminal Minds, Good News Week, Ashes to Ashes, Nip/Tuck and Deat Set all on at the same time.

Ashes to Ashes doesn’t compare to Life on Mars, but last night’s finale was excellent. There is another season isn’t there??

  47. angelsgal says:

Suprisingly good figures for Hamsih and Andy, matching last years xmas special, where it was 1 of 3 shows to get 1mil or more for ten this week last year)Especially when you consider it was a clip show of all the crazy things they did this year that we saw on Rove and ten hasnt had 1mil in this slot since the premier of 5th grader (and we all know how the ratings went after ep 1). There show hurt both Men and the Big Bang, both down about 200k. While Motorway Patrol went up for its finale. Hamish and Andy was sooo funny last night and we all know the mass potential these 2 have to have a mega hit TV show, shame they dont wanna do it. Mentalist does well for nine, now owning the slot, i didnt watch this last year but im loving it now, enjoying it very much,

  48. tasmanian devil says:

@ryan November 23 11:27pm, no it hasn’t, in fact it’s not even in the Top 40. The iTunes download chart isn’t really accurate as it’s for iTunes only. The official download chart is here:

  49. Messy says:

Ryan…….don’t you know how the figures are generated?
Naturally it went to number 1. Thats what the record company wanted and made it happen. It was generated through the “process”. Doesn’t everyone know that???

  50. ryan says:

stan’s song, “Black Box” has gone to number 1 already

  51. vid says:

    Morello will win the apprentice

  52. David Knox says:

Yes GW is out in Melb this Thursday.

  53. Peter says:

whats with the ‘coxy’ special on this thurs at 7.30 here in melbourne? what happened to ghost whisperer?

  54. ryan says:

ten are apparently surprised at the result of idol, so i read. im surprised too, pretty good figure for a show everyone is calling to be axed, also won in ten’s 3 key demos. Now they just need to revamp the show again!

  55. Goonies says:

If Idol comes back next year are they going to rename it Hillsong Idol?

  56. Brodie says:

60 Minutes is in a fair bit of trouble. Not surprising given the drop in standards, and a selection of stories which are no where near as interesting as those on Sunday Night.

Absolutely no hype surrounding Idol this year. Not surprised with the lackluster ratings, and I doubt we’ll even remember the name ‘Stan’ beyond the new year.

Really enjoyed the Twenty20 last night, surprised it rated so low.

  57. Harry says:

People keep saying how meaningless Idol is.. Sure this year wasnt up to scratch. If they fix the show and find some great contestants then people will watch. It was a great finale last night, somethings epically failed but it was good. Better than last years finale.

    TBYG shouldve rated higher.

  58. ryan says:

thanks david. forgot about those channels. boy do ten need to bring forward their new channel! 24 hr sport is doing nothing for them! they should have had the sport channel as their second channel and done something else with hd

  59. catherine says:

Im shocked. I expected the cricket to be the number 1 show last night. I just thought it would rate. I bet 9 are disappointed. Im sure they hoped for better figures.

Im really enjoying sunday night. Glad it’s coming back. They had two great stories last night with Kurt Fearnley and Jim Stynes.

Anyway is this the last offical week of ratings? Im guessing so with all the shows finishing. Hate this time of the year when there is nothing to watch.

  60. David Knox says:

Ryan, GO was big last night. 4.8 share.

  61. ryan says:

i find it strange 9 beat ten so much considering ten beat them 6.30-7.30, and also beat them 8.30-10 pm with the 10pm figure 300,000 more than any of nine’s shows

  62. Dino says:

Ouch for 60 Minutes, thrashed by Sunday Night, 3rd in it’s timeslot with under 1 million viewers. 2009 has been an epic decline for the former powerhouse.

lol at Ten and their breakdown of the Idol Finale. No amount of spin will hide the fact this season has been nothing short of an absolute faliure. Annihilated in total people and beaten in the demos for the majority of the year, yet Mott spins the whole season on the back of the finale figures – which are well down on last years. I don’t think advertisers will be so blind when reviewing Idol.

  63. David Knox says:

Allie as the other post indicates Idol peaked at 1.71m so that would be a better reflection of those who may have tuned in for a momentary glimpse. 1.47m is average for the final 20 minutes. But I concur with the tactics of splitting into 3 parts.

  64. Ruth says:

Re Ch 10, I was one of those final 2 min channel flickers for Idol, too long drawn out to watch it for 2hrs ++. Strange way of audience counting however.

Ch7’s ‘Sunday Night’ was very good as usual,

Ch9’s Twenty/20 All Star cricket was pretty entertaing too.

ABC’s Samson and Delilah didn’t do as well as I thought it would but perhaps people taped it.

We shouldn’t be complaining about the variety of programmes available on FTA on Sundays.

  65. damo says:

the cricket clearly beat idol by a fai way if you ask me. 1.1 million isn’t a great figure for a finale. i can garuntee 1 thing.10 wont change this show around either

  66. Allie says:

1.4M for winner announced means almost nothing. That means 200K people watched it for 5 minutes, tops. 1.2M for the finale show is about what I thought it would get, considering Idol’s rating woes this season. It rated a consistent 850-900K the whole season, so an extra 300K curious on the evening sounds about right. It may win key demos, but is that enough to justify its huge rating costs? Can Channel 10 really be that cavalier with the way it spends money? The sponsors of the show aren’t really being given the best bang for their buck. Terrible numbers for 60 Minutes final show of the season.

  67. CrAig says:

Idol was a really well produced show last night. Probably the best it’s ever been. Buble was dreamy!

Pretty good numbers too considering the weekly average. A show that can average a mill each week even after 7 years deserves a bit more respect than it gets from the h8ters who’ll no doubt comment after me.

  68. callas says:

so Idol hovers around the 900,000 mark all season with most of the public and industry declaring it dead yet for the finale it gets roughly an additional half a million more people to tune in and boost its ratings thereby justifying ten’s decision to bring it back next year…. so all that bitching throughout the year just went to waste !!

  69. Neon Kitten says:

Ten separating Idol into three “shows” when it was, in fact, one single show, well, that just shows how meaningless this whole size contest really is.

I honestly don’t know why any of you care. Unless you work in the ad industry. In which case you should tell you bosses that, in the words of Johnny Rotten, they should by now have gotten the feeling they’re being cheated.

  70. George says:

…I have to say, Idol did better than what I thought it would. I thought the show would only get around 1mil for The Winner Announced, and around 850-950k for the other segments.

Still, for its ratings throughout the series I don’t feel sorry for TEN. They completely destroyed the format this year. Yes, it was good for them to try something new, but their execution was just horrendous.

Next year Idol needs to be back on two nights a week, on a weeknight, and the elimination show cut down to 30 mins.

  71. Jed says:

Sunday Night was #1 in Adelaide, although i’m completely against chequebook journalism.

As for the Idol figure, i’m going to only acknowledge the 1.1 million which is terrible for an Idol finale. The 1.4 million for winner announced could be people who flicked over for 2 minutes while they announced the winner. No doubt Ten will be claiming the 1.4 million though, even though it would only include 2 mins of announcing the winner. And TEN still came 3rd.

And loved the references to Firefly and Buffy last night in Castle, i was cracking up, and me mum had no idea why i was laughing.

  72. cros says:

and they still want to bring back Idol when it’s Grand Finale can’t even make it to no. 1?

  73. Brett says:

Great to see Sunday Night, beat 60 minutes, great episode last night, all the stories were fantastic especially Jim Stynes in the red centre

  74. Michael K says:

Those Idol numbers are pretty bad, but at least not the 1.1 or 1.2 milion I thought was a distinct possibility.

  75. Jimbo says:

Aussie Idol did well. It increased from all of this season, but obviously down on previous years. I thought that Ten’s share was to be a little better though.

  76. Castle Fan says:

No individual numbers for the two separate Castle episodes? That stinks…
