Video Premiere: Yeasayer's "Ambling Alp" (NSFW)

Features yellow goo, masked marauders, and naked people. Video Premiere: Yeasayer's "Ambling Alp" (NSFW)

From Grizzly Bear's "Ready, Able" to Animal Collective's "Summertime Clothes" to Suckers' "Easy Chairs", many of 2009's music videos have been marked by a distinct strain of absurd trippiness. But this video for "Ambling Alp"-- the first single from Yeasayer's upcoming album, Odd Blood-- just may trump all those when it comes to allegedly drug-fueled insanity. There are desert horse riders with mirrors for faces, long nails scrunching up lead singer Chris Keating's face, and even a part where faces break off from bodies in the form of glowing liquid tubes. Beat this, MGMT!

The video was created by directing duo Radical Friend (who have an amazing website) and you can watch it at Pitchfork.tv or below:

People are people, and sometimes they sue video game manufacturers for causing them alienation. GameSpot reports that a San Jose gamer named Erik Estavillo is suing Activision Blizzard, makers of the online multiplayer game World of Warcraft, for a whole mess of poorly thought-out reasons. Estavillo believes that the game's monthly subscription fee is too high and that its various other charges are too numerous, and he also believes that the game contributes to his sense of alienation. To that end, Estavillo has subpoenaed Depeche Mode multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Martin Gore, who, to hear Estavillo tell it, is an expert in alienation (via Slicing Up Eyeballs).

The Thermals Start Work on New Album

The Thermals Start Work on New Album

Portland punk bashers the Thermals released their last album, Now We Can See, in April, but they've already revealed the release date for their next full-length-- which they haven't even started recording yet. Next month, the trio will head into Portland's Jackpot Studios with Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla producing. And yet Kill Rock Stars claims that the band's as-yet-untitled fifth album will drop on September 7 of next year. Moxie!

Bryan Ferry Works With Jonny Greenwood, Flea, Others

Bryan Ferry Works With Jonny Greenwood, Flea, Others

The last time forever-suave former Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry released a solo album, it was a collection of Bob Dylan covers, and we didn't much like it. But Ferry's forthcoming album looks pretty interesting.

Rolling Stone reports that Ferry is currently at work on a new solo album, and he's lined up an impressive roster of collaborators: Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist (and sometime Thom Yorke sideman) Flea, and the great Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers. The album is due in the summer of 2010, and Ferry's posted some footage of its recording sessions, soundtracked by the 1985 Ferry solo track "Boys and Girls".

Watch: Final Fantasy Performs New Track, Cooks Dinner

Watch: Final Fantasy Performs New Track, Cooks Dinner

"Dinner With the Band" is an IFC program that features bands performing and cooking and eating food. The latest season premieres tonight with special guests Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Next week, one man band Final Fantasy, aka Owen Pallett, stops by.

You can watch him perform new track "Keep the Dog Quiet"-- from the forthcoming Heartland LP, out January 12 via Domino-- and act kinda awkwardly while show host Sam Mason cooks and makes small talk, in a video after the jump. (Via Stereogum)

Future "Dinner With the Band" guests include YACHT, Kid Sister, and Les Savy Fav. If you're looking to quell that appetite, head over to Pitchfork.tv and watch this episode of Les Savy Fav frontman Tim Harrington's "Beardo" show, in which he plays a homeless man who eats a Cheez Doodle out of another "homeless" man's crotch.

In Brief: Tomorrow Never Knows, DM Stith, Laminar Excursion, Jaga Jazzist

-- January 13-17, the Tomorrow Never Knows Festival will come to the Chicago venues Schubas and Lincoln Hall. Atlas Sound, Final Fantasy, Bowerbirds, the Cribs, Voxtrot, the Rural Alberta Advantage, Lee Fields & the Expressions, and others will perform, with more artists to be announced.

-- Bedroom folkie DM Stith has already dropped two EPs this year. And on December 8, he'll complete the trilogy when he drops his Braid of Voices EP on Asthmatic Kitty. It features remixes by Bibio and Clark.

-- Two Bloomington, Indiana labels, Crossroads of America and Flannelgraph, have teamed up to launch a 3" CD subscription series called Laminar Excursion Monthly. Folks like Richard Swift, J. Tillman, Damien Jurado, and Cotton Jones will contribute music to the tiny, tiny CDs. Subscribers will get two CDs per month for all of 2010, as well as a box to hold all of them. You can subscribe to the series here, but they're only taking 100 subscribers, so click fast.

-- On January 25, Ninja Tune will release One-Armed Bandit, the new album from nine-member Norwegian experimental crew Jaga Jazzist. Tortoise's John McEntire mixed the album in Chicago.

Los Campesinos! Reveal Bloody LP Art

Los Campesinos! Reveal Bloody LP Art

The new album from blustery British band Los Campesinos! is called Romance Is Boring. It's out January 26 in North America (February 1 in the UK) on CD, LP, and MP3. That picture of a bleeding leg is the cover designed by Cari Ann Wayman, according to the band's site. Sort of grotesque, sort of beautiful, very apropos.
