Laboratory Safety

Laboratory Supervisors/Principal Investigators (PIs) moving into new laboratory spaces must notify the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.  This includes PIs who are new to the University, existing PIs who are moving into new spaces, and PIs who are moving into spaces that are newly built or renovated.  Prior to moving into the space, the PI should complete a Laboratory Commissioning Questionnaire, available from OEHS.  In addition, the PI should consider the following:

  • If moving into existing laboratory space, the PI should attain assurances that all rooms and equipment have been properly decommissioned (see Shutdowns and Moves).
  • If the laboratory space containers any movable equipment, furniture, or other items, the PI should arrange for disposal or be prepared to take ownership of the items.
  • Before beginning work, the PI should attain approvals or from the Institutional Biosafety Committee, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the Radiation Safety Committee, the Institutional Review Board, and any other oversight committees, as applicable.  Current approvals should be modified to include the new location.
  • The PI should submit an inventory of chemicals by room to OEHS and disclose the use or possession of any select agents.  The PI should also include a list of all laboratory personnel working in the space.
  • The PI should contact OEHS to provide appropriate signage and labels as applicable.  OEHS may also perform a Laboratory Safety Inspection as part of the commissioning process.
