Former full-back Kris Radlinski has been appointed as Wigan's rugby general manager in a new, specially-created role.

The 33-year-old will assist new head coach Michael Maguire following the Australian's recent appointment at the club.

Radlinksi retired from playing in 2006, and has since been working on a part-time basis assisting the Warriors scholarship scheme. The former Great Britain star was also part of Tony Smith's backroom team for the recent Four Nations series.

Speaking about his appointment, Radlinski said: "I am honoured to be given such an important and prestigious position within the club and look forward to the challenge.

"I enjoy my work with the scholarship players and am delighted I will be able to combine the two roles, in particular using my experience to ensure the players understand what it means to play for Wigan whilst also looking after their welfare."

Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan was quick to stress the importance of the role Radlinski will play.

He said: "This is an important role within the organisation and an area identified as needing improvement to ensure that today's new standards, disciplines and levels of performance, skills and behaviour required from a Wigan player are the same from scholarship to first team.

"He will liaise between Michael and all other aspects of the club to enhance the smooth running of the performance department.

"Kris has quickly shown his qualities already in a scholarship management and in his special role with the England team and is a perfect candidate."

Great to see another Wigan lad brought in together with Deacon and Wane , Mick Maguire has a good solid Wigan influence in the back room. The squad we have is good , question mark against Mark Riddel, with the recent appointment of Deacon as a player coach and Now Kris , its looking good for the future. Thanks Kris for all you did as a player and I am sure you will be great in your new role.

Great appointment by the Warriors, for both the club and the player. He gave it all for the team and there may not be many out there who would be better equiped for the role; in particular teaching young players to take pride in the jersey like he did. It should add the finishing touches to promising players of the future.

Thanks for everything you gave to us as a Wigan player Kris. You deserve this long over due position within the game.Your knowledge is of paramount importance not just to Wigan, but to the game in general. And thanks for giving me a humble spectator the chance to say to people of a younger generation I saw him play.

It's good to see a great player being treated with the respect he deservesl, in League we don't usually do this. This guy gave everything to League and even turned down big money to go to Union! Well done Wigan.
