South Pole 2001

Location: Antarctica
Coordinates: 90° South
Elevation: 9,300 ft.

The Antarctic, and the Pole in particular, has long been the goal of explorers, scientists, advenurers, and those who are attracted to remote areas of our earth.

Scientific studies at the pole include: astrophysics, aerology, glaciology, and seismology. The phenomenon known as halos is also studied.

Because the pole is covered by 9,000 feet of moving glacial ice, surface survey marks travel approximately 10 meters annually. Unlike the ceremonial pole, each January 1st the position of 90 degrees south is re-determined and a unique survey monument is erected.

The 2001 annual mark bears the words "Not Without Peril" and a sculpted scorpion overlying the continent of Antarctica. The words and image are in memory of astrophysicist Dr. Rodney Marks (1968-2000.) Scorpio was Rodney's favorite constellation.
