Recent growth in profits bodes well for stronger investment spending in 2010At first glance, a recent Statistics Canada report showing that the country’s gross domestic product grew by a meagre 0.4% in the third quarter (seasonally adjusted at annual rates) suggests that the economy’s overall health is pretty dismal. A separate Statistics Canada report, however (the Quarterly Financial Statistics for Enterprises), had some more encouraging news. Following a 5.9% drop in the second quarter, operating profits of Canadian corporations increased by 7.9% in the third quarter. This increase is the first since the third quarter of 2008, over which time operating profits have shrunk by 30%.
