For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Sarah!

How'd she do, folks? In the Xcel Energy Center, the evening was a HUGE success, as was her speech. I couldn't find any critics (photo courtesy Reuters).

What did you think? Did she accomplish what she needed to? How are you feeling about the race now?

One word...

Reaganesque.

"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain." Official Motto of the State of Iowa

Yes, We Will

Talk about "Yes, We Can"...she's not just a future promise of some nebulous "yes, we can" campaign line, she's "Yes, I am" "Yes, we will" and "Yes, we just did" all in one.

A great day for Women in America.  A great day for conservatives.  A terrible day for the media establishment's power structure and the engrained culture of liberalism.

Way to Go, Sarah.

"A great day for conservatives.  A terrible day for the media establishment's power structure and the engrained culture of liberalism."

You got it!

And as a woman myself, I could not be more proud.

Okay okay, I'm not a woman.

A Huge Thank You to Newsbusters and MRC

The GOP convention is bringing out the worst of the left leaning media and NB/MRC is right there to call them on their bottom-feeding, gutter-scraping reporting.

She was phenomenal. She

She was phenomenal. She made me want to vote for McCain! Choosing her gave me a lot more confidence in McCain's ability to put good people in important positions in his administration.

Loved her many digs at Obama. I also noticed how she was "hands off" Biden. I thought this was a smart move since she showed how she was more qualified that Obama to take on the responsibility of being POTUS.

The Newsbusters Comments Crew: Saving the Environment - One Ribeye at a Time! h/t Dr_Liberty

She delivered

the female version of the speech with her homilies sprinkled in...

What about the issues? where is the beef? The jabs are good for a captive audience but let's see how she does without the adoring crowd...!!!

What little we know about her gives one pause...with 2 children with 'special needs' now --how does she make a decision to run for public office...would be interesting to have that thought pattern analyized!!!

She told us what she wanted

She told us what she wanted to do about taxes, energy, foreign relations and several other key areas - AND SHE GAVE DETAILS. Maybe you should pay attention to the speeches that people give instead of listening to others interpret it through their beer goggles.

The Newsbusters Comments Crew: Saving the Environment - One Ribeye at a Time! h/t Dr_Liberty

how does she make a decision to run for public office...would be interesting to have that thought pattern analyized - And if we had all thought patterns analized then there would be no one left standing.  What a maroon.  Go back and read 1984 again.

Oh docb, please. "... let's

Oh docb, please.

"... let's see how she does without the adoring crowd...!!!"

As if Obama has ever been within 10 miles of anything but a fawning and fainting audience. Even when he's got his audience eating out of his hand, most of what he feeds them is filler (ah, uh, um) if it hasn't been scripted.

Yes, let's see how she does unscripted. I'm willing to bet it will be better than "the messiah."

the objective

Fair concern...but this was an introduction...last night was not the night she should go into a deep, boring policy wonk speech.  She has 60 days to talk policy, but only one night to rev up the crowd.  (that said, i think you get a sense of her positions, no?)

On issues, she'll only get stronger.

Beyond expectations....

now if she actually means what she says about serving the people, and doesn't get ruined by Washington.

And she has to talk to McCain about global warming and ANWR

racist? you idiot

Any black person is free to join the party, it's not like the GOP hires members of the party .

The blacks are too stuck on the nanny state plantation to break loose and start taking care of themselves, so they nurse from the Dems and the programs they push.

The few blacks who are willing to join the party of limited government (ok, so Bush grew the gov't and the GOP payed big time last election) take heat from "real" blacks as being oreos or Uncle Toms.

The Dems are racist for keeping the blacks hooked on the Gov't because the DEMS think the blacks can't make decisions for themselves.

political maven - I think yahoowatcher was pointing out the

irony and bias in the media. I could be wrong, but I don't think he agrees with it.

Bigot Bigot

No one keeps anyone from going to the party that reflects the values important to them...

It is just a problem for the old white voters and the religious right who have benefited from the tax breaks and big corp advantages, who hold fast to the repub party!

Since you brought it up, docb

Since you brought it up then you must also be saying that the old black voters who have benefited from the welfare system and other government handouts hold fast to the dem party?

You sound silly.

for the Leftist docb

Yeah, those tax breaks go to PRODUCERS who actually hire people and expand the economy...not losers like you who just ungratefully suck the tits thereof.  Besides, the top 60% of wage earners pay 99.94% of taxes...maybe we should be demanding the poor pay THEIR "fair share", to use your language.

And of course you hate Big (fill in the blank) until it is time for you to steal from them.  (All Leftists like you really know how to do is to steal, anyways.)

Shockingly, most of us here don't want to live our lives being Wards of the State like you do.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

I'm sorry you took this post in a way I had not intended.

I understood what Yahoo was saying. You guys need to lighten up!

Maybe that's because there

Maybe that's because there aren't many black Republicans???

And if they had "rounded up" a few more, I'm sure today the MSM would be accusing them of "showcasing" them.

The WaPo reported today...

...36 black delegates out of 2380 delegates on the convention floor. You're correct, there aren't many blacks in the party. Too bad, their loss...it is the lowest number in 40 years...do we really care?

Sarah Palin - This is what a Conservative looks like !

I actually stayed up to

I actually stayed up to watch her speech and can honestly say I was impressed.

I hope she can carry the confidence she displayed last night into the debates and other unscripted venues.

Also, I think it's really sad when people (libs) are so thin skinned they can't handle little barbs like the ones she tossed last night.

Right MC - there were no personal attacks

No one was accused of being a liar or hating black people - They didn't advocate arresting them as criminals or say that they didn't care about people. All the comments were based on lack of experience and judgment and saying different things to different groups.

Two standards

It is ok for them to take potshots at McCain but no one is allowed to do the same to them. They can look down on a mayor from a small town but you cant look down on their community whatever.

Slam Dunk!

Billary should be watching very closely and taking notes.

Rachel Maddow........More LEfty MSNBC BS

Rachel Maddow last night brought up that someone at Palins church spoke to the
congregation that Israel deserves terrorist attacks because they dont beleive in
Jesus.....Maddow states that Palin was present and cites Poltico.com as her
source......

This is such bullshit, where was Maddow and the rest of NBC when the Jeramiah
Wright crap came out. He wasnt talking bad about just Israel, he was talking
about us, the USA.

As I am a Jew, I take extreme offense to the Wright comments, and if these
rumours are true, then I am equally offended about what might have been said at
Palins church.

The difference is that I know Palin doesnt beleive this crap, and Im sure
that this hasnt been the basis of her church experience for the last 20 years.
Unlike Obama, who has been subjected to this hat speech for 20 years, and only
denounced it when he got busted on the national stage.

Another example of liberal bias..MSNBC PANEL= LIBERAL, LIBERAL, LIBERAL,
LIBERAL, Pat Buchanan....

I do hope this comes out

I do hope this comes out against Palin. I really hope the media attempts to flay her alive for sitting in a pew while a VISITING PREACHER gives a rather bigoted, short-sighted message.

If the MSM does this, Wright will be re-opened in such a spectacular fashion that Obama will have no idea what hit him. It wouldn't surprise me that the MSM has DNC orders not to follow through on Brickner's message that day.

Fascism is a religious conception in which man is seen in his imminent relationship with a superior law and with an objective will that transcends the particular individual - Mussolini

Let's not forget..

....that Obama participated in the (million man march) to willingly listen to Farrakhan spew his anti-american and anti-jew hate. So it didn't start with Wright.

SDS:

Have you read the newspaper column Sen. Obama wrote about that experience?

When I was a pup George Lincoln Rockwell came to speak in my hometown.  If I had listened to him (it was past my bedtime) would that have made me an American Nazi sympathizer?

Possibly.

Who knows frank? If GLRs speech left a deep impression on you, perhaps it would have shaped your life in a manner that led you to be an American Nazi sympathizer. Life's funny about which events impact people in meaningful ways.

I understand what you are saying though, just participating in the march(speech) doesn't mean you endorse those views.

How about this, provide the link to Barry's article. Let us read it or is there sumthin in it to support SDS's claim?

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love youBut if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

Don Marquis 1878-1937

HillbillyKing:

I have not read Sen. Obama's column.  What I know about it I read in the very interesting New Yorker article about his early experiences in Chicago politics - a very different take than you will get from the Republicans, by the way.  I don't know if that little Hyde Park newspaper archives are on line.

A brief story about George Lincoln Rockwell's speech.  He came out on stage and began spewing his hate and vitrol and the audience didn't say a word.  No one yelled or protested or said anything.  Silence.  He, of course, was used to the audience going nuts.  He went on and tried to stir things up and the folks just sat there.  Finally he left in anger!

We've all read the sappy articles on Obama frank

the difference is - we see them as sappy articles. He's full of these great ideas that he's never been able to implement even with his closest confidants and friends.

He talks about taking anger and vitriol out of the process but chooses a spiritual adviser who dams America - especially white people. He's buddy buddy with a former unrepentant terrorist. He's entrenched in the corrupt Chicago and IL politics with mentors like Emil Jones and Mayor Daly.

If Obama were a leader, would some of his ideas rub off on the people close to him? Wouldn't he cause Ayers to at least be repentant or Wright to start using a more positive message, or Emil Jones to not appoint his son to an elected position, or Mayor Daly to own up to his role in the police brutality and torture cover-up?
The answer is no because he's a phony. He's about money and power and if he can't change the opinions of his good friends, how is he going to change America?

Dee Bunk:

Please see the comments below directed to HillbillyKing.  Sen. Obama has accomplished a great deal - implementing his ideas and change.

To suggest he's suppose to change the views of others is somewhat unrealistic.  What has Sen. McCain done to change Pastor Hagee's crazed ideas?

Sen. Obama is not "entrenched" in Chicago politics.  To state that is to demonstrate you simply don't know what you are talking about.  Police brutality?  See below - and read about Sen. Obama's work to stop that.

Sen. Obama has accomplished

Sen. Obama has accomplished a great deal - implementing his ideas and change.

Such as WHAT!?  He hasn't stayed in a single position LONG ENOUGH to accomplish anything.

Instead he has continuously marched to the filing station for his next job.

I know guys like that who endlessly move up, but never actually accomplish anything they are assigned.

What has Sen. McCain done to change Pastor Hagee's crazed ideas?

What have I done to change your views?

Sen. Obama is not "entrenched" in Chicago politics.

Entrenched?  No, hanging out in liberal bunkers like Wrights and Ayers homes is a better depiction.

Frank - McCain was never freinds with Hagee

Obama was friends with Wright and Ayers. McCain has been a leader on many issues. He changed Bush's and other Republicans minds on the surge, he changed Democrats minds on their inappropriate filibuster of Federal judges. He's authored and passed lots of legislation.

Obama has done nothing to show that he can create change. Nothing. Please correct me with examples if I'm wrong. Obama has only catered to the radical left wing whether it's been filibustering judges or apposing the war or opposing born alive infant protection.
Obama speaks out about "torture" of radical Islamic terrorists but has no opinion on his buddy Mayor Daly being part of a large police brutality and torture cover-up in Chicago. Those people who were beaten and tortured were not killing thousands of people. They weren't treated to loud music, bright lights and water, but brutal brutal beatings and torture that killed people and included "electric shock to the ears and genitalia, mock executions, suffocation, and burning." according to Human Rights At Home. Clear evidence came to the forefront a couple years ago but the statute of limitations was up and people like Daley were safe from prosecution.

Obama is 100% partisan and will be lead by the nose by extreme left wing power brokers. He's shown no courage to go up against anyone in his party.

Dee Bunk:

There is nothing wrong with fillibustering votes on Federal judges.  For much of our history approving judges required a unanimous vote - so all the Sheer Insannity crap about "in the history our nation" is just that - crap.

Sen. McCain himself has said there is not a substantive difference between stopping a judge with the "blue slip" process and stopping a judge with a fillibuster.  Republicans had no problem whatsoever with blue slips - until they didn't like the results when the other party used them.

Without evidence you attempt to link Sen. Obama with Major Daley.  Sen. Obama's success in Chicago was working with the Hyde Park branch of the Democratic Party - not with Major Daley's machine.  See below for what Sen. Obama accomplished regarding brutal police interrogations.

As to how the US military and government "contractors" treated prisoners in the Middle East - sadly, torture and murder happened there as well.

Sen. Obama got ethics reform passed both in Illinois and in the US Senate.  There was plenty of opposition from both parties - but he got it done.

If you don't suppport him then don't support him.  Why do you also have to lie about his record?

Dee

He (O-Force One) lost my vote -- and I hope a large swath of them throughout the country, which looks to be the case (just look at that anti-Obama book flying off the shelves) -- being so closely tied to garbage like Rev. Wright. He has so MANY very questionable ties, but that one alone should ruin him.

The reason he still has a fighters chance? The black vote. Simple. (Well, that, and all the elitist guilt-ridden whites on the coasts who'd probably run to the voting booth for him if he was in the Nation of Islam.

Frank, that "candidate" is one, big propped-up joke. More and more are seeing this, thank G*d (um, ... damn America.)

Shy - did you support him at one time?

It's great if you were able to see the light. I have to say that even though I've never supported him (because I've known his positions being in IL), I used to think he was a decent man. Now I think he's very slimy and opportunistic and was "made" by the Chicago mob politicians.

Dee

Hey, forgot (or didn't even know!) that you're an Illinois-ian :p

Well, when he first appeared in the primaries, I wasn't all that impressed with him then. For me, right away I sort of saw him as a blowing-with-the-wind type politician, but he did have charasma, no question.

My oldest brother, and even my ex sister-in-law (his ex) -- who have both been pretty independent or even leaning more to the right most of their lives -- both told me how enamored they were with him. So, he DOES have that effect on people.

But again, Rezko (and yeah, I believe you about the mob connection) and all others aside, just the Wright connection alone I find so insulting and completely irreprehensible.

So you have more in-depth dirt on him, being in IL?

What do your older brother and ex sister in law think about McCain/Palin now?

Dee Bauk:

Actually Sen. Obama worked to change the corrupt political situation  both in Illinois and in the US Senate.  And he was elected while avoiding the Daley machine.  If you facts to back up your wild (and potentially libelous - that's why NB has the disclaimer below every blog) claims, where are they?

It's About Time

I see a change and my thought is it's about time. Instead of trying to pander to the lefty MSM the Republicans seem to be biting back in a very direct way. Sarah Palin has done this by letting the press know that she's not going to Washington seeking their approval. Rather, she's going there seeking America's approval. And I can certainly say this is one American who whole heartedly approves.

As usual, the MSM "misunderestimated." And this AM they are reeling, resorting to "yeah, she can deliver a speech that someone else wrote for her." (Sen. Obama, call your office!)

And for an added chuckle, Gloria Steinem is upset!  How great is that!  She gives Palin minimal kudos, because she is, after all, a woman.  But she is the WRONG woman!

A couple of her highlights:

She was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular,

Unlike Obama, who was elected to the IL legislature by suing his opponents off the ticket until he was unopposed.

and this is rich:

Perhaps McCain has opposed affirmative action for so long that he
doesn't know it's about inviting more people to meet standards, not
lowering them

What can be more conservative than that?

BTW, where in the Constitution of the United States does the government have the authority to prohibit anything I do as long as what I do does not threaten the life, liberty, or property of another citizen?

And just where, exactly, do you get off calling sarc a racist?

-Dave.

Racist? Maybe not, BUT...

Now, note I never have called Sarcasmo racist (and yes I know the question was not directed at me), but his obsequious love of Ron Paul (who himself despises Israel passionately), as well as his massive anti-Israel rant of some time ago, did give me pause to wonder sometimes.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Noel,

During this powwow, did you happen to discuss Poptech's constant spamming throughout these threads? I mean, at least Sarcasmo only links to articles. He doesn't cut and paste the damn things ad nauseum.

Just a thought.

I agree 100% Restless - Poptech is the spammer not Sarc

Sarc uses his own words and doesn't cut and paste. Someone should be warning Poptech.

R1, PopTech apparently has special privileges here at NB.

It appears that he is allowed to insult and offend us all, numerous times, with impunity.

Sarc never offended me even once.

Of course, I have very thick skin in that I am not easily offended. However, PopTech managed to get under my skin in a huge way, more than once.

Something smells here at NB.

I think that there is just a lot that goes on here that the moderators don't see.   There are too many comments for one person to keep track of and I'm sure they have many different people monitoring and even still don't see everything.

Poptechs obnoxious cut and paste jobs don't seem that bad when you haven't seen them 1,000 times and I'm sure many of his woman hating links and comments were not seen either.   It's too bad because he is trolling big time and NB should do something about it.

Quit complaining and protest to the mods. Send them emails. Be their eyes and ears.  Blanket them with incessant emails why you want PopTech to go away. I'm with PopTech, I don't like the Sarah Palin pick...maybe you should round up all the NBers who disagree with you and have them banned.  I guess in a perfect Dee World, there would be no dissent and only your comments would exist, nonstop day in, day out...no thanks.

Ubercon

Ubercon, you are beginning to get on my nerves.

As someone who has been here for a very short time, it is obvious that you are totally unaware that long-time members like Dee, as well of the rest of us here at NB, do not "complain" to the mods every time we encounter a troll.

We are not spineless bed-wetting libs here and, as such, we are free to go after trolls pretty much any way we like.

BTW-you can bitch to the mods that this comment was, in your words about me the other night, "over the top" all you want. Hell, I may even forward it to them myself.

Are you sure you are an actual "conservative?"

I am only asking because Sarah Palin has more conservatism in her pinky than John McCain has in his entire body.

-Dave.

Define it, since you know all about it...

Dave, can I call you Dave?

For all intents and purposes, I have a real problem with the "conservatism" of Sarah Palin. Are you saying her social views are what define her overall conservatism? From what I am seeing, her ideas on wasteful government are contradicted by her own actions. She sells the state's jet for a loss, bills her own state for staying at home, keeps the money for "a bridge to nowhere" for other pet projects, increases taxes on corporations, turns around and gives money to everyone in the state for just being a citizen, kicks out the republicans...sounds more like a looney leftie socialist to me. Shall we look into how she uses her position of power to damage the careers of public servants?

As McCain had said...

Go ahead and work it as best you can...the fact remains Sarah said," thanks but no thanks" to the funds implying she didn't want the money for the bridge to nowhere and to allow the money to be returned to the good citizens of the US of A. She didn't. She said,"thanks but no thanks" to the bridge...and we'll keep the money anyway, suckers! Credibility problems abound with this woman. Oh, did I say woman...I meant person!

The bridge collapse in MN had nothing to do with a lack of funding. Unless you lived in Minneapolis around the time of the bridge collapse, don't come on here talking smack like you know what happened.

For the record, the state of MN had budget surpluses as far back as 05 (the deficit under Jesse Ventura was reformed by a Republican) but conveniently all the extra money was spent as soon as it was collected.

How much should she have

How much should she have received for the plane? Please explain what you mean by "...at a loss". I have resold every car I ever owned "at a loss". Must we explain the word "depreciation" to you? The plane was 26 years old for Pete's sake.

Oh, and the only "credibility issues" around here are your conservative credentials. Palin has received less federal money than any of her predecessors in the same time span. She suspended the state gas tax for one year, not three months like others.

And, other than hiking the tax on oil companies, she has lowered taxes in Alaska. Now, I would love to hear an explanation on that as much as anyone, but one must also remember that oil is about the only resource Alaska has that makes the state any money. Besides, maybe the fallout from that will teach her a lesson. I also have not heard her say that she would do the same thing nationwide.

In the end, all things considered, she is the most conservative person on either ticket, or, other than Paul*, any of the people in the primaries.

*I do like Paul's fiscal positions. It's his foreign policy that keeps him from being taken seriously.

Anecdotal Evidence

Well, if McCain put Palin on the ticket to attract the Hillary voters, I think he succeeded.

I was watching Morning Joe this a.m.  Mika (in the tank for Obama) Brzinski was absolutely enthralled with Sarah Palin.

As we know, MSNBC has a bunch of ultra left-wingers on every day...and today was no different.  As they took their usual shots, Mika leaped to Palin's defense, over and over.  It was amazing.

One of the talking heads (Larry O'Donnel?) said something idiotic about "how is she going to be able to take care of her children?" or somesuch...Mika actually jumped out of her chair in response. She was furious in her defense of Palin's decision to run.

If Palin was able to get this kind of reaction out of an uber-liberal, imagine what the middle of the road Hillary voters are thinking.

As for the prospect of the grind of the campaign, and a debate or two with Joe Biden...I think Governor Palin (wisely not saying it, though) has a "bring it on" attitude.  The woman's a big game hunter, for crying out loud...she's not afraid of anything as mundane as liberals, media talking heads, or Joe Biden.

This is only going to get better and better.

Attack of the infuriated women

I can't imagine why any woman wouldn't tear off the heads of these liberal idiots for suggesting that Ms. Palin can't manage career and motherhood.  She has the added advantage of having older kids who can help carry the load as well as a devoted husband and extended family.

Yeah, Roland The Race-Baiter Martin was crying about that last night. Guess McCain just lost the "community organizer" vote. Oh well.

Perhaps the Obama camp and the pack of raving Obama surrogates at CNN and MS-NBC shouldn't have been so quick to put down Palin's experience and the size of the town Palin governed during the past week. Payback can be a bitch :-)

Before they make

Before they make that decision, community organizers should ask themselves, "would I vote for myself for president?"

Anyway, community organizer is such a vague term anyway. How many people actually define themselves as such? Community volunteer, yes. But organizer? Sounds very bureaucratic to me.

Calling Sen. Obama a community organizer is an obvious attempt to demean his experience.  Not that there is anything wrong with such a position - and actually it's more anti-bureaucratic than bureaucratic.  Most of us no long hold the first position we obtained after graduation - either from high school or college.

Why don't conservatives refer to Sen. Obama as a civil rights attorney?  Because it sounds too good?

Because he (or his campaign

Because he (or his campaign staff) cites community organizer as part of his experience resume that makes it fair game.

If incorrect references to candidates is an issue for you, then back at you for the media chosing to use "the former mayor of Wasilla".  They do it as a putdown, her correct title is Gov of Alaska.

I think they are also using

I think they are also using her "PTA" experience in that regard.

However, I would wager that thousands more people can relate to "PTA member" than to "community organizer."

Think again

Calling Sen. Obama a community organizer is an obvious attempt to demean his experience.  Fine.  What executive experience does Obama have?  My guess is that being a "community organizer" is IT.  Other than that, he has eight years in the IL Senate and less than two in the U.S. Senate.

This election year is going to be rare in that whoever the President is, he will come out of the Senate.  Why is that such a rare thing?  Care to take a stab at it?

Why don't conservatives refer to Sen. Obama as a civil rights attorney?  Because it sounds too good?   Actually, my guess is that is because this isn't mentioned very much by the Obama worshippers.  I wonder why that is?

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

j frank.....a "civil rights attorney"??

How many cases has he handled?  How many has he won/lost?  How many high profile clients does he have?  ZERO.....because he was a civil rights attorney in name only......ya he has a law degree....looks good on the wall, along with his community organizer certirficate.

Almost all of us would give back our significant pay raises we have gotten over th epast 20+ years if we would be allowed to going back to that magical position of Platoon Leader in an Infantry Company.  If you are lucky, you can remain a platoon leader for 18 months.  I was doubly lucky - I lasted 22 months.

Then you sadly get bumped up to a staff.

Why don't conservatives refer to Sen. Obama as a civil rights attorney?

Attourneys are not exactly in favor right now, I think you might want to keep it quiet that Obama even went to law school if you have his best interest at heart.

I honestly don't know how she could have done better.  The family looked great.  She was gracious to the LSM who has behaved so shamefully.  She has a gift!

People have wondered about the Hillary effect.  Dems have forgotten that many women love their husbands, think children are a blessing, and like having a professional life.  The women around me think she is a breath of fresh air and can't wait to see the Palin family grow up, especially Piper and little brother Trig.

Gov. Palin

isn't doing herself any favor bringing up "The Bridge to Nowhere."  She campaigned for it, pushed Congress to grant the earmark, and then didn't build it because the earmark wasn't large enough.  However, she did spend that Federal money on other projects.

I'm amused by "conservatives" who support her.  Her wealth re-distribution scheme - tax oil company profits, give the money to Alaska's citizens, ask for more Federal dollars for Alaska infra-structure improvements - apparently works for Alaska.  I don't think that really works for the rest of us.  It certainly doesn't do anything to bring down the price of gas.

Correct...

j.frank wilson,

Those have been some of my thoughts, also. I may not agree with a lot of what you are saying in most threads...I will agree with you on this issue. There is something about Gov. Palin that doesn't make sense and the support from the "conservatives" who think she is on their side...She is all about the power and money feeds the electorate. She destroyed republicans in her quest for high office and redistributed more money to the constituents of Alaska. By increasing their dividends, she secured her office by buying them off...in return she promoted more gas & oil projects for the state helping to increase the bottom line of the companies but also the overall take for her supporters. She has secured more Federal monies for a wealthy state. The question- Who is paying for this increase in wealth? It's not her constituents, not her oil & gas buddies, not her lobbyists in DC...it's the American people who's footing this bill. I think she hit the ball last night...it's now a matter of time to see where it goes...homerun, foul ball, base hit, fly out or double play...time will tell...I don't like this VP pick nor ticket for that matter...Things have got to change and improve before I vote for this ticket. Just my two cents.

I find it very interesting that the Republican party has a very well established record over the past 8 years - and now it appears it can't run on it so it's going to run from it.

Right frank, not.

Don't you find it extraordinary that the party that has had 2 years as majority in congress, are trying to run on a change platform. Why aren't they triumphing their approval rating as a signal that they are getting things done? I mean, Barry is a Senator from that party, right? I mean, those approval ratings reflect on his service, right?

Correct frank.

My mistake, they were seated in Jan 2007.

Now back to my original question;

Don't you find it extraordinary that the party that has had (edit: 20 months)  as majority in congress, are trying to run on a change platform. Why
aren't they triumphing their approval rating as a signal that they are
getting things done? I mean, Barry is a Senator from that party, right?
I mean, those approval ratings reflect on his service, right?

To which your response was(minus the factual correction on date seated);

The public perception of Congress is largely shaped by the Republican

Since you deflect my questions by blaming the prior Republican majority for the approval ratings now suffered by Congress, I'll ask you to apply the second sentence in your second paragraph to the previous paragraph and try my questions again.

Is this the Mr. Smith is dead, you refer too?

If you make people think they're thinking, they'll love youBut if you really make them think, they'll hate you.

Mr. Smith Is Dead

That's the one.  Read about Alaska's Sen. Stevens and his air tanker "leasing" scheme.  Years later, Gov. Palin was chair of his 527.  Read about Sen. McCain's great speeches against pork and waste in the defense budget - and then he'd go ahead and vote for it.

Sen. Obama can't run on the US Senate's approval record.  He can run on what he's managed to get done there.  Sen. McCain is running from his record.  How many of his major legislative accomplishments does he still support?

How many times was George Bush's name mentioned in the final evening of the Republican Convention?  I didn't watch every minute, but I saw a lot of it.  My count?  "Zero."  Laura Bush - 1.

Geez frank,

Sen. Obama can't run on the US Senate's approval record.  He can run on what he's managed to get done there

Yet you expect the Republicans to run on their record from the past 8 years.

Thanks for your time frank, it's been entertaining.

Even if my CPA erred by 100% (last audit was about $4.00 in my favor), what do you think this audit is going to cost my company in time and the taxpayers in dollars? Jethro knew as much as any college grad on how the government creates wealth.

Sarah Palin is the most qualified candidate in the history of the world.

How do you create your wealth without the Gov't ?

BD,

Just thought I'd ask, it seems you're a businessman thwarted by the government regulatory process to increase your overall take. What is the main obstacle you see in creating more wealth for your business and what kind of change would you like to see?

Ubercon

The government does not create wealth

The day we ask the government to allow us to create wealth is the day we are over.

Let me point you to my own company of one employee: Unsane, Inc.  When I go out to create wealth, by way of investments and getting hired at various jobs, I don't ask the government for a permission slip.  (I missed the part where the Constitution called upon me to do that.)  Nor do I do that when I plow the earnings from said jobs into various investments.

The examples are too lengthy to list, but I also doubt that William Boeing, Bill Gates or Sam Walton asked the government's permission to set up their businesses.  While the government does SOME things to allow business to thrive, like protect property through various means and deliver mail, it does not generate wealth.  The PEOPLE do.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

We should not depend on the government

to create wealth - but it's just silly to state government can't do it.

Say a developer purchases many acres of agricultural land and gets it rezoned for commercial or residential use.  Instant profit - granted by the zoning change alone (the land is the same land it was before the change).

Say the Federal government changes the law on how many radio and television stations one company can own (even though those stations use the public airwaves for free).  Instantly the value of those stations increases dramatically.

Then there are tax breaks, subsidies, and numerous other methods for government to funnel wealth to corporations and even individuals.

There is a difference

There is a difference between "creating" and "promoting." Businesses creat wealth by investing in an idea. Governments promote wealth by setting up fiscal policies that are helpful to businesses. Your examples are proof of this.

The Newsbusters Comments Crew: Saving the Environment - One Ribeye at a Time! h/t Dr_Liberty

Silly. Okay, the

Silly.

Okay, the Government confiscates land that could be used for any purpose at all and restictively zones it.  They have effectively SAPPED the economic aspects of that land by their actions.

Then you say "ooooh, the government then lessens restrictions on that land and created wealth?'

That is like saying the government giving tax rebates thus creates wealth - asenine.  If they had not sapped the economy in the first place by confiscating the wealth, they would not have the option to return it.

SARC is probably going to voice his opinion on this folly and I will undoubtedly agree with him on this silly argument of yours.

So, why is the DDR not still with us in that case?

but it's just silly to state government can't do it.  So I am sure you can explain to me then why the DDR collapsed and not the BRD.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

I work in Military Intelligence, but I am related to numerous businus people and work with others in the contracting field.

What is the main obstacle you see in creating more wealth for your business and what kind of change would you like to see?

The federal government should completely step away from the Minimum Wage concept.  If I have five dollars in my pocket and desire someone to repaint my house, I should be allowed to offer the job to anyone who is willing to pain the house for five dollars.  No government oversight involved.

Likewise, as an employer at a major company, I should be allowed to offer any job at what ever rate I desire.

Other things I would change if I were king for a day:

Arcane Federal rules and regulations essentially forbid the firing of federal non-temporary employees who have been deemed useless.  This is not only wasteful, but destroys the morale of other federal employees who actually get the mission accomplished and frequently get saddled with twice the weight to make up for the failures.

Couple this with the federal civilians being unionized, and it is a total recipe for disaster.

I would thus make it easier to fire federal employees.

Come again?

BD,

Wow, you work for the Government...you work for everyone who pays taxes. Glad to have you as an employee.  Your entire paycheck is derived from the government. Discounting inheritance and gifts, you make a wage to create a life for you and those you support. Sounds pretty socialist to me living off the Government. Without a constant paycheck, you'd have to find work in the private sector where risk truly rules the day. Gosh, to think of you trying to negotiate and securing my $5 dollar contract to paint my house would be sight to see right up against Juan & Jose's painting services. Since there's no Government to enforce the law, you would have to compete for lower and lower wages against possibly an illegal immigrant. Well, not illegal since the rule of law would be thrown out the window...remember no Government...I think you should enjoy the benefits of the Government and it's warm blanket of security and stop the belly aching.

If I followed your guidelines, I'd have used ya' and found someone else for cheap...when do you want to come over and join Juan & Jose's crew?

Wow, you work for the

Wow, you work for the Government

I do, and as such can see where its inherent flaws exist firsthand.

Wanna talk wasteful?  I can talk all day long about that.

Your entire paycheck is derived from the government. Discounting inheritance and gifts,

Yep.

you make a wage to create a life for you and those you support. Sounds pretty socialist to me living off the Government.

You are correct, in my role as a government employee I dont create wealth in any way, and am actually a hinderance to wealth creation.

I might be a necessary hinderance, but a hinderance the same.

Without a constant paycheck, you'd have to find work in the private sector

Yep, either that or live in the hammock that welfare has become.

where risk truly rules the day.

Actually, I live a riskier existance than anyone on wall street, but I bet with my and my compadres lives when necessary.  Not just their money....

Gosh, to think of you trying to negotiate and securing my $5 dollar contract to paint my house would be sight to see right up against Juan & Jose's painting services.

If Juan and Jose do not wish to waste their time painting my house for $5, then they do not have to.  Nor Reginald and Dwight, Josh and Ben, nor Sally and Beth.

Then market forces truly come into effect and I have to either paint my own house, or offer more money.

Since there's no Government to enforce the law, you would have to compete for lower and lower wages against possibly an illegal immigrant.

And.....?

Well, not illegal since the rule of law would be thrown out the window...remember no Government...I think you should enjoy the benefits of the Government and it's warm blanket of security and stop the belly aching.

Oh, I see.  You think that since I am against the government interference in business and I see government as inherently wasteful, then I am against ALL government.

That is an incorrect assumption.

If I followed your guidelines, I'd have used ya' and found someone else for cheap...when do you want to come over and join Juan & Jose's crew?

But I am the guy with the house and $5 in my pocket to pay for it.

Ubercon, I dont view

Ubercon, I dont view military personel as supporters of a  Socialist support structure. The Constitution very clearly states that it is the goverments responsibility to raise armies and pay them that serve. A military moron, so to speak.

Ubercon does not seem to

Ubercon does not seem to realize that while some governmental employees are wasteful they are often a necessary waste.

Likewise an ocasional lawyer.

But both a parasitic in nature and NEITHER of them increase wealth.

My apologies for the lack of communication...

...and definitions. This anti-government line of thinking tends to obscure the necessity of having a government by the people, for the people. There are so many levels to government, we could not in a single thread explore every nook & cranny of what is good and bad. Obviously, government is here to stay. Seeing the forest for the trees is paramount to enjoying our high standard of living. Wealth is generated by the individuals who use the government to their benefit.  UPS uses the roads to deliver packages the same roads which carry people to the stores. Those who abuse it will suffer the consquences if caught. The amount of money given to welfare types who do not deserve the checks is pale in comparison to the monies given to the private contractors who rip off the government for jobs never performed.
One can only hope...integrity rules the day.

If I offended you, I apologize. I was trying to make a point on how government is an integral factor in our lives and how this society cannot function without it. You cannot start over and wipe the slate clean...there will never be a free market in this country. It will be a limited free market with government regulation.

I'm done for now thanks for the discussion.

Ubercon

This anti-government line

This anti-government line of thinking tends to obscure the necessity of having a government by the people, for the people.

I would not debate the necessity, but the question was "Does government create wealth" which it does not, nor cannot.

Wealth is generated by the individuals who use the government to their benefit.

If by "Uses" you mean cooperates, you might have a point, but wealth is not created by government, and usually government operates to the detriment of wealth creation.

The amount of money given to welfare types who do not deserve the checks is pale in comparison to the monies given to the private contractors who rip off the government for jobs never performed.

I would say the numbers are directly inverse.  Few contractors "Rip off the Government" as you say, but most welfare recipients are actually capable - just not willing.

No, Ubercon,

bigtimer is correct. The government serves a limited purpose, but does not create wealth.

Also, what is with the "Milf " in regards to Sarah Palin? That sure makes you look inteligent. Didn't they teach you manners in college?

The government doesn't create wealth?!?

As for individauls and companies?!? hmmm...defense contractors aren't becoming wealthy from the global war on terror-GWOT? Oil companies aren't becoming wealthy from their land leases?

As for the Government...the treasury produces currency at an alarming rate, to manufacture a dollar bill costs how much? pennies? The subsequent sale of said dollar bill to banks and countries produces a fiscal uptick for the citizens of this fine country...government by the people, for the people...yeah, you're right government doesn't produce wealth for itself. It's the drain of cost overruns by wasteful government contractors, earmarks to little podunk towns in Alaska which starts to increase our overall deficit. Gosh, to think no one is getting wealthy from the government...give me another break as I laugh out loud.

By the way, it's our money which is being wasted...

More silliness to respond to

Buying a cheap Chinese hammer at Wal-Mart so that I can turn around and buy more expensive American goods (like a PC I am looking at getting in the very near future)...good.  By the way, for all you protectionists out there, I own Craftsman tools, because they are made with quality in mind.  (That they are forged here in the USA is icing.)  As long as Sears continues to sell Craftsman products and as long as they are made well, Sears will be in business.

Anyways, yeah, doesn't it suck to have such an organization as the DoD?  The protection and defense of the United States is SO overrated...

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

A PC manufactured entirely in the US?

Unsane,

Come on, you're joking, right? Before you start waving your American flag (made in china)...look at the products you're buying. Sears enjoys the profit margins on cheap foreign products sold to you. I would love to see a retail business selling only "Made in the USA" products. It's unrealistic and a pipe dream to believe they exist. Most of the products you consume are made of a combination of US and foreign parts...it's a sobering reminder of just how much we depend on foreign products.

No, it doesn't suck to have the DOD. The point I was making was the fact that the DOD consumes most of our resources than entitlements. The protection and defense of this country has started to become more and more expensive as we transition money away from our troops and into the private enterprises deemed better than the troops we have...something has got to change. Private contractor costs about $350,000 as opposed to a Private in the Army making how much???

Let's stop paying the contracting firms and see how fast they cut & run as opposed to the Private who will earn a medal for saving the contractor's ass...

I want the money to go back to our brave men and women who defend this country not some private contractor siphoning off our well earned money. Yeah, you're right no one gets wealthy from the government nor does the government create wealth...What a joke!

Ubercon

Rebuttal in brief

Um, ubercon, you seem to be new here, but I don't need you to explain the world of economics to me.  Yeah, the PC I will buy probably has a Malaysian keyboard and chips made in Thailand assembled in China, but ultimately, this is an American purchase.  So who do I ultimately benefit?

If you have been here awhile you would know that I am constantly pilloried by protectionists and people who are horrified that the United States gets weather systems from the outside world, much less contains ANY foreign goods.

The DoD consumes most of our resources?  Your ignorance is astounding.  I would think that $500 billion or so out of a budget that is $3 TRILLION isn't really all that much.  Face facts, entitlement spending is the biggest component of the budget.  It could be solved if we could privatize Social Security and Medicare, things which you are doubtless opposed to.

Besides, why are you or anyone whining about contractors?  I worked with them in-country, many do fine work.  And YOU ASKED FOR THEM.  The people of the United States get what they ask for and they got contractors filling many functions the active duty ranks once filled.  Where were you in the early 1990s when this trend began?  I'd imagine nowhere to be found.

Yeah, you're right no one gets wealthy from the government nor does the government create wealth...What a joke!   The joke's on YOU.  The government does not create wealth.  They can permit wealth to BE created by protecting private property and so on...but I notice you did not respond when I posted the same to your above post where you implied that government exists to create wealth.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Privatize everything?

Upcountry,

Okay...sounds good...just as long as I make the money and you don't. Got an idea? Let me steal it from you and make money from it. Got a product? Let me get someone to make it cheaper and undercut your pricing. Better yet let's have the Gov't pay for the training of our troops and then I'll give them more money when their deployment is over. Of course, I'll secure the Gov't contract for being able to pay them well...real well. If the Gov't doesn't pay, I can always ship them off to a better customer.

Got nothing against making money...it's how you make it and whether or not it's been legitmately gained. My pet peeve is the corruption that continues to permeate the system.

As for the dispersal of trust funds to ungrateful kin, you gotta have it to give...and you can decide where it goes before you do.

75 cent drop in gas prices over the last couple of months...yeah, supply is way up...

Privatize the schools? Who are you, Milton Friedman? Sounds like a Univ. of Chicago experiment bound to fail...

You don't like Bush's plan?

Yes I do, and many others have tried and FAILED.

Got nothing against making money..

You meant having money GIVEN to you...

Yes supplies of oil are up.

Oil prices dropped yesterday after a
government report showed weekly rise in US crude inventories for the
first time in six weeks.

Oil inventories rose 9.39 million barrels to 305.9 million barrels, the biggest gain since March 2001

The government doesn't

The government doesn't create wealth?!? No it doesn't! The government prints money as a way to promote trade. That is a way too common misunderstanding by liberals, which is why they are weak fiscally.

The government doesn't

The government doesn't create wealth?!?

That is correct, the governement by its nature can only SAP wealth, not create it.

Sure, they can rob peter to make Paul weathy, but that is not welath creation per se, simply transferrance.

Given the opportunity...

... Barack's plan for businesses is to tax the hell out of them. Where is this "gov't protection" you speak of? As for personal taxes, BO wants a tax of 28% on any profit if you sell your house, 39.6% of any stocks, insurance policies, IRA's, college funds, retirement funds, or ANYthing that pays or reinvests dividend...  I'll never be able to retire at a rate like that (and neither will anybody else for that matter). He also wants to re-instate the inheritance tax. That's what Obama's government wants to do for you... You yourself state limited government is fine, but, the Dems are planning on cranking it up a notch or three!

Her job as governor is to

Her job as governor is to do what is in her constituents best interest. She changed a bad plan to favor the people of her state. I notice that it did not favor the townfolk of Wasilla over others. You can ask the question, but her history says she can.

The Newsbusters Comments Crew: Saving the Environment - One Ribeye at a Time! h/t Dr_Liberty

Let me ask you a question

What is it exactly about Palin wanting to shake up the good ol' boy network in DC that you have a problem with? Or any of you other Palin detractors  -- What is your problem with electing a person that wants to fight corruption in DC as she has exhibited she was capable of doing in Alaskan politics?  I would think Americans on the right or the left would be in favor of electing someone that is willing to fight political corruption regardless of Party affiliation as Sarah Palin has demonstrated time and again she is willing to do.

I am seriously asking this question and hoping to get a response - What do you find so appalling about a candidate wanting to fight political corruption regardless of Party affiliation?  Is it fear of losing unearned taxpayer handouts?  Are you part of the 'good ol' boy network?  I mean, what could possibly be your reason?  It makes no sense....

Two things...

1. Her very short experience with dealing in Republican corruption in Alaska does not translate into the subtle complexities of dealing with the overall power structure in DC and its many layers of wheelin' and dealin'. Goes back to the lack of experience.

2. She will be easily manipulated by forces beyond her comprehension and control. The power brokers are entrenched whether you like it or not. We need people who can change the system to benefit the country as a whole and not just a narrow slice. I'd much rather an experienced surgeon working on me than a butcher.

Why do the people who want to change DC, then stay in DC after their terms are over? Power and money go hand in hand...not everyone goes back to their podunk towns and trailer park constituents...

Plus, isn't she still lactating? Her female hormones must be wreckin' havoc on her thought processes...any ladies want to chime in...?

Telling it like it is...I'm not saying it's a bad thing...eventually, those good hearted people from podunk towns and trailer parks will produce offspring that prospers and pulls the rest of their family out of squalor and abject poverty. If they could only get an earmark for a better sewer system and school... Very good!  You counter an accusation of extreme elitism and total snobbery with MORE extreme elitism and MORE total snobbery!!!

Keep it up!  You know, during the 2000 Presidential campaign, there was an effort afoot to paint TX as a Third World country due to the governorship of Bush...a Dem mayor of Houston, Lee Brown, demanded they knock it off, because he knows what I know about my home state...that TX is an extremely proud place, and for all people think of it being a massive Hickville, it has the 4th, 6th, and 8th largest cities in the United States.  Now, I realize Palin is from AK and not from TX, but the same snobbery and provincialism that TX (being in the heart of Flyover Country) is subjected to is, and has been, pointed at AK.  Mr. Brown knew that a sustained attack as such would have ensured it remain Republican for another hundred years or so.  Elitism and snobbery such as yours only ensures that places like TX and AK remain firmly conservative.

As for lactating and female hormones...haven't some of you pointed out the hormonal ups and downs of a Hillary presidency? No misogynistic statements have ever been said by posters on this website...all of a sudden the air of political correctness permeates the air!  You are not getting away with Katie Cupcake tactics THAT easily.  If you have the guts, you will quote SPECIFIC INSTANCES, just as I have quoted a specific instance of your hatred for women.  I don't dislike Hillary Clinton for being a woman, I have an infinitely better reason for not liking her.  Well, two reasons.  One, she is a Socialist.  Two, she passionately holds deep contempt for what I do on a part-time basis.

Well, Miss Cupcake?  Any specifics to back up your lame general accusation???   Hmmmmmmmmm?????

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Did you check out Cindy's outfit on the opening of the RNC?!?

$300,000 estimated cost...I was alarmed how bold she could be for showing those poor people in TX & AK she understands and can empathize with them and their struggles. As long as they keep drinking her belgian beer, she'll be just fine...Explain to me the definition of elitism? Would you consider Cindy & John common working types? The labels you choose need to be defined and used correctly in the correct context. John jokingly described to be rich you need to make $5 million....I'm sorry to report I'm not rich by any means...As for women...the more I grow older, the more appreciation I have for them...I've found the younger ones not as experienced as the older ones...the bigger the better...they appreciate the attention.

That's rich! Pardon the pun...
A woman of prestige does not, I repeat, does not wear knock offs and fake diamonds! She can afford it and she can flaunt it. If she wore anything you described, she would have been destroyed for showing herself as a fraud. You honestly believe Oscar would have sat quietly as he watched Cindy & Laura parade around stage with knockoff dresses of his own designs? That's delusional! Don't you realize the GOP is about showing off their successes to those who can recognize those successes...no, I guess you can't...It's much more palatable for those being duped to believe their elitist leaders are just like every common person...
She was stunning in her real Oscar gold dress & huge diamonds!

Rich people DO come from a "working" background.  What, do you think that rich people NEVER EVER WORK?  If THAT is the case, I suggest you hit a library and go check out The Millionaire Next Door by Mr. Stanley and Mr. Danko.  The people that you so ache to steal from are a little different than you think.

And you HAVE to steal from people.  After all, you are the one who thinks that wealth is generated by the government.  If that isn't a clarion call for kleptocracy I don't know what is.  (This also shows me you can't generate any wealth on your own which I find downright depressing.)

It is ALL coming out now.  Your snobbery, your extreme contempt for your fellow man (you showcase that through your Socialism and your desire to completely micromanage and control people to the point where you tell them where, when, how, and on what they spend their money), your misogyny.  You are quite the ugly individual here.

So, going back to the original point, have you found any specific evidence of NB hatred of Hillary Clinton strictly because she is a woman?

Check my track all you like and you'll never catch me attacking Hillary for being a woman.

There's nothing wrong with actually fighting corruption.  The problems come from talking about it but not doing it.

Have you read "Mr. Smith is Dead?"  It's on the web.  It details how Sen. I am equally amused by Socialists like you who whine about the price of gas, and then when presented with ideas that actually WILL bring down the price of gas, throw an absolute fit.

See, frank, doing nothing doesn't bring down the price of gas either.  Helping yourself to what oil companies make and stealing from them doesn't help either.  In fact, that is far worse than doing nothing.

I lived in AK and if the PFD works for them, so be it.  That is up to the State of AK.  Wow, imagine that...a Rightist saying that if a state wants to try some new and novel approach to something, then it should do so.

Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Unsane:

You've managed to take both sides of the conversation.  Did you learn this from Sen. McCain - support it before you're against it?

Gov. Palin pushed through a very hefty tax on oil company's "windfall" profits and then distributed the money directly to the citizens of Alaska.  Along with at least partially explaining her very high approval rating, is that a government program you approve of?

How about Gov. Palin's proposal to pay each Alaskan $1,200 in energy debit cards?  Or suspend the state's gasoline tax?  Do those ideas make sense to you?

Gov. Palin promised an open and transparent state government.  State scientists studied the polar bear situation - and now she's done nothing to make public that research.  Sound familiar?  What information is she afraid of?

And then there are her flip-flops on "Troopergate..."

One, Meet Sarah

The One . . . has more than met his match.

fox has the Palin biography video playing now

that was cut last night due to time restraints

To summarize Sarah's speech in sports terms..

That incredible speech was comparable to how Tom Hamilton, play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Indians, would shout:

"A swing and a drive - deeeeeeeeep left - a-waaaaaaaaaaay back - this ball is gone!"

Sarah Barracuda hit it out of the park, having the bases loaded with Romney, Huckabee and Gulliani - it was a grand slam Wednesday night - you go, girl!

I think that come Nov. 5,

I think that come Nov. 5, pundits will be saying that no vice presidential candidate has ever had more impact on an election result than Sarah Palin.

This morning Glenn Beck played highlights from her speech set to "Barracuda." That and his analysis brought home for me just how incredible her speech was last night. As it sinks in, it only gets better.

Can she debate Joe Biden tomorrow? That's gonna be fun... a polished politician with a penchant for saying inappropriate things vs. a smart, well-spoken Mom who speaks her mind and doesn't give a hoot who you are.

Biden will screw up at some point just trying to keep up with her pace.

The question at the top of

The question at the top of the OT asking if she accomplished what she needed to...

Hell yes...and then some!!!

Starting with Linda Lingle forward the speeches were great, starting with Steele the rest of the speakers were on fire....I have never enjoyed so much in one night as I did last night when it comes to a convention, or for that matter anything else I can think of politically...

There were such great one-liners, such truth in the speeches, such passion...Rudy was at the top of his game wasn't he?!

Sarah ain't going anywhere msm, but keep it up, because they will soon in my opinion, they just have received so much criticism in the last two days that they are pretending to lay low for now...as much as they had hoped they could drive her out...all it will do is elevate her...and lord she did that herself with her own words last night to-boot!

Sarah cleaned the clock of Obama and team, the press, and anybody else who messes with her...with a smile on her face...as only a woman can do if I may say so myself.

I am still so happy today...

Job well done all of you last night...especially sticking it to the press!!!!

I followed that thread and read through a bunch of the comments and had a thought about un-intended consequences. McCain picked Gov. Palin for a lot of reasons. However, I don' think he figured that lots of people would tune into the Repubs Convention just to hear her speak. Some of these people's idea of what Republicans and Conservatives are like comes filtered through the liberal media and leftist blogs, etc. They are seeing Republicans for the first time without that filter and they are liking what they are seeing.

Best Line of the Night

Obama has had time to write two autobiographies but hasn't written one piece of legislation.

Gothampc:

Actually, the line was "memoirs."  And the fact is that Sen. Obama got ethics legislation passed in both the Illinois legislature and the US Senate.  Of course, Gov. Palin was happy to brag about her ethics reform - just couldn't manage to give credit to someone else who has done the same - on a somewhat larger stage.

Sen. Obama has worked hard to get other, important, bi-partisan legislation passed.  Perhaps he didn't "write" the bills - just got them done.  It's amazing what one can accomplish if one isn't concerned about getting the credit.

Gov. Palin insisted on referring to Sen. Obama's job between college and law school - community organizer.  How long did he do that - 18 months?  Why couldn't she refer to him as a "civil rights attorney?"

Actually, I remember

Actually, I remember writing my first autobiography at the age of 26 as a young Captain who had just completed an assignment as a LRSD soldier.

OOOOPpppppssssss!!! I guess i didn't.  (But it would have been a better read, trust me.)

That would explain the lack

That would explain the lack of publication as the head of the Law Review, and as a College Professor, and the minimum amount of legislation with his name on it (what is it, one piece?). Obamessiah is humble and doesn't want any recognition. All that stuff was probably published anonymously. Yeah, that's the ticket! Thanks for the nuance. The God of Change and Hope is quite proud of his humility, thank you very much. Those of us who don't live in Greek Temples just don't understand. He deserves to be Present....er I mean President.

“it is not the role of this Court to pronounce the Second Amendment extinct.” - Justice Antonin Scalia

Greek Temples?

The Republicans use a Temple stageset and no one says a word.  The Democrats use one and its suddenly a big deal.  Is this the best you got?  With all the problems in this world - a stage set?  How shallow...

Meanwhile, the information is out there.  Sen. Obama has worked to pass a number of important bills - including that one with Sen. Richard Lugar.  Guess you just don't care much about that issue, do you?

Meanwhile, what legislation has Sen. McCain passed that (1.) You support? and (2.) He still supports?  He talks the talk about earmarks and wasteful DoD budgets - and then votes for 'em.  Just like he voted along with President Bush 95% of the time in 2007.  But now after 30 years he's going to roll up his sleeves and change things.

The "voted w/ bush 95%" canard

While mostly true (see link) So what? Obama votes with the Dems 97% of the time.

You don't know that most senate votes are along party lines?

http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/is_it_true_john_mccain_voted_with.html

What "canard?"

It's a fact.

What difference does it make?  Sen. McCain voted with President Bush 95% of the time in 2007 and now he's trying to run as a Washington outsider who's going to drain the swamp and clean up the corruption.

If Sen. McCain is elected we can look forward to four years that will be very much like the previous eight.  The least Sen. McCain can do is just admit that.  However, instead of running on his record he's running from his record.

Post the links, frank

HillbillyKing:

There is a difference between voting on and passing legislation.  Before folks can vote they need something to vote on.

Here are two links that detail Sen. Obama's accomplishments in Illinois - working on a bi-partisan basis, often when his party didn't support him, getting it done:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/08/AR2007020802262.html

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/03/AR2008010303303.html

Why did Gov. Palin have to brag on herself getting ethics reform accomplished and then lie about Sen. Obama's record in the same area?  Particularly since he not only did it in Illinois but also in the US Senate.

Do you recall during the Presidential debates when George Bush said the number one threat to the US was loose nuclear weapons?  What has he done about that since that little talk?  Sen. Obama - working the Sen. Lugar - got legislation passed to reduce the worldwide threat of WMD.  Apparently that's not an important issue for Gov. Palin, either.

Wow. Great links you posted

Wow. Great links you posted there, Frankie. That "evidence" hardly reinforces your argument that The Messiah "gets things done".

How brave of The Messiah, how he was "instrumental" on bills that got controversial bills passed by votes like 58-0 and 35-0! With a wave of his hand, even, The Messiah was able to change everybody's mind. A real Bi-Partisan Jedi!

Next time, post actual hard evidence of true reform from The Messiah, not starry-eyed editorials. And, no, voting present does not qualify as bi-partisanship.

Cause you seem pretty good at bobbin and weavin around questions. :-}

Hell, I take the blame for it though, I did say Barry's legislative record. Allow me to be more specific; Barry's Federal Senate record was what I was referring to. That's why I posted the link for it and Sen. McCains.

So, back to my original point;

Now, you can point out which important bills Barry worked to pass.

I'll grant you S. 2566, which became part of HR 6060, which became part of the Department of State Authorities Act of 2006, which was signed into law in Jan. 2007 was a good piece of legislation. Any others?

Oh, and please keep it to Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain, that was the original comparison.

Oh, and now that we know you can provide links, which Thanks BTW, can you make sure to provide links to those other pieces of important legislation Barry worked to pass.

What lack of publication [sic] in the Harvard Law Review?  First of all, editors edit - writers write.  Second - here's a newsflash for you, as Gov. Palin would say:  Student authors of work published in the Harvard Law Review don't sign it!  Why?  Because published work represents the efforts of many hands.  Gee - we're back to that old don't worry about the credit, aren't we?

Meanwhile, Gov. Palin is claiming credit for stopping The Bridge to Nowhere.  What she won't say on national tv is the truth - Congress didn't earmark enough money for it.  So she took the funds and spent the money on other projects.

Washington Times reports...

...the following...

"Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has said repeatedly that she told Congress "thanks but no thanks" to
the notorious bridge-to-nowhere project derided nationally as an
example of pork-barrel spending. But some are waiting to see whether
she'll also pull the plug on another big earmark dubbed "Don Young Way"
that could benefit her hometown."

here's the link...

http://www.washingto...

It would be huge for her to say "No" to the earmark. Or else another distraction for the McCain campaign...I hope she does the right thing!

Ubercon:

Newsflash:  There is more to the "Bridge to Nowhere" story.

Gov. Palin didn't turn down the money - she happily took the funds and decided to spend them elsewhere.

Why did she not build that Bridge?  Because the US Congress didn't appropriate enough money to pay for the whole darn thing.  Poor Alaska would have had to kick in some state dough to get it done.

And to spare us all the angry "show me the link" emails - here's the source.  Of course, just because a progressive such as me accepts this source doesn't mean every right wingnut will.  That's a chance I'm just gonna have to take.

Dead link dude. The money

Dead link dude.

The money appropriated for the bridge to nowhere was done so under the previous administration. Costs started skyrocketing so Palin pulled the plug. She even stated in her campaign that she would look to other ways to spend the money, since it was ALREADY appropriated and would be lost.

In other words, once the price tag soared higher than the $223 million appropriated for it, it was cheaper to find other ways to make the connection. The money had already been lobbied for and approved before she became governor.

Restless:

Gov. Palin supported The Bridge To Nowhere and asked the Alaska congressional delegation to obtain funds for it.

Your comment that the money would be lost is quite interesting.   You mean the Federal taxpayers would have been able to use the money on another project - perhaps in another state?  But since the citizens of Alaska want to pocket the proceeds from the state's windfall profits tax on oil companies and use other people's money for their infrastructure improvements, Gov. Palin spent the money elsewhere.

However, the most interesting part of your comment is the dead link.  That was a September 21, 2007, press release from the State of Alaska explaining Gov. Palin's decision.  It's now been taken down.  Very interesting...that Republican scrub team is sure moving fast, isn't it?

OUT OF THE PARK!

(in best Ann Wilson voice)

OOOooooooohhhhh  SARAHCUDA!!!!!

I new it was going to be good

With 3 kids, I rely on my TIVO to watch the speeches uninterrupted.  After Sarah's speech, I turned on the TV and flipped around a minute before gettng into the speech.  I saw Olberdork and Chrissy Mathews all in a twist.

I knew she knocked it out of the park.

Drill here, Drill Now!

someone tell Hannity how to pronounce PALIN

I watched FNC last night and Sean (I love myself) Hannity kept miss pronouncing PALIN. He pronounces it with a 'soft A' instead of the 'long A' it should be.

Media sucks at journalism *again*

It's pretty bad when they spend ALL their time covering the daughter getting knocked up (who cares?) and I end up having to learn about dairy-welfare problems (I know, "happens everywhere," but it's still dusturbing to the fiscally-responsible) from the Kos-tards doing the sex-obsessed media's job. Media morons, please...Follow the money a little bit.

Mainstream Media not picking up on lies

It annoys me that the mainstream meda is not analyzing the content of the speech, but just talking about how she appeared and the reaction in the convention center.

Sarah Palin could be played

Sarah Palin could be played by Tina Fey.  That's what I kept thinking watching the speech. Look for a guest appearance on the new season of SNL.

Jon Stewart's response:

Okay, okay...I admit it...

When McCain announced Sarah Palin as his VP choice, I had a mixed reaction. Mostly I was thrilled that he had the intestinal fortitude, something the Democrats obviously lacked, to put a woman, not to mention a conservative, on the ticket with him. However, I did have some concerns about whether Gov. Palin was up to the job, and that her selection would be viewed by many as just a stunt to get votes.

Well, her performance last night put all of that to rest. Simply put, Sarah Palin was AMAZING! She owned that stage last night, and she took the fight right to the elitist liberal Dems and the sexist, leftist MSM. I loved it! Her speech was incredibly well written, and she delivered it perfectly. Gov. Palin has a great sense of timing, and she seemed very comfortable in front of what was, I'm sure, the largest audience she has ever appeared before. She was incredibly poised and confident, and didn't seem in the least as the rookie she is when it comes to appearing on the national political stage.

Gov. Palin has given the Republicans just what we've been waiting for in this race...A conservative candidate that excites and motivates the base, and the fact that she is a woman, is the icing on the cake. Sarah Palin is the whole package.

The Dems today are in panic mode, I'm sure. This race has begun anew with Gov. Palin on the ticket. The next two months will be very interesting. It's going to be a sprint to the finish line, so buckle your seatbelts!!!

What IS a Community Organizer?

To save space, since I do have a tendency toward the verbose, my thoughts on Governor Plain's magnificent appearance last night at the RNC are here.

But, I have it, straight from the horse's mouth, the answer to that burning question (please forgive the verbosity, but this I HAD to share):

What IS A Community Organizer?

EUREKA!

Robert Gibbs, Obama's Senior Strategist/Spokesman, just appeared as a guest on FNC's 'The Strategy Room', hosted by Chris Wallace.

In discussing Governor Palin's speech last night, Wallace was, surprisingly, committed to asking question after question of Gibbs regarding the points Governor Palin made about Obama's inexperience in her much-lauded speech of last night.

Wallace rattled them off two at a time and, as Gibbs shifted quite uncomfortably in his chair, his face becoming more and more red, licking his lips nervously, white knuckles glowing in contrast to the black fabric of the armrest as he squeezed tighter and tighter with each passing second of shrieking silence on his part, stammering to find some kind of answer, just...  stunned, speechless, and <i>so</i> uncomfortable, until Wallace, for the sake of time, had to move things along and ask another question.

Finally, Wallace got to "THE" question...

What is a "community organizer"?

Are you sitting down?  Breathe deeply and regularly.  Relax.  Remember, Obama believes, with all his heart, THIS is the experience that qualifies him for the White House.  This is the experience to which Obama constantly points as the defining and shining moments of his "experience-rich" career.  I'll concede it was work of importance.  It was.  I'll not diminish Obama's community organizer experience.

Okay, here we go...

Robert Gibbs, sitting almost sideways in his seat, as if he was squirming away from what he was going to say, stuttered and stammered and answered (a really good paraphrasing follows, italics for emphasis mine):

You want to know what Obama did as a community organizer?  Is that what you want to know?  Okay.  Okay.  What community organizing meant to Obama was that people no longer had to live in homes infected with asbestos.  And it meant he found jobs for skilled workers displaced from a steel mill closure.

And that, ladies and gentleman, is what Obama and his supporters believe qualifies him to be President of the United States of America.

Delusional doesn't even come close to describing the state of the minds that have bought into Obama's (complete lack of) experience story.

Since this is the meat of Obama, who is the Man Behind the Curtain pulling the strings?  Is it Soros, or, is that too obvious?  Obama has been hiding in plain sight his entire political career, so, the obvious wouldn't be too far off the mark, actually.

I hope you found this interesting.  I sure as hell did.  In more ways than one.  This illustrates the complete willingness, of at least fifty percent of the American public, to "buy" an individual, deliberately molded as a "living trend", who has been hawked by endless infomercials to be "the thing" which will give them that feeling of "satisfaction" they crave when "something new" is purchased from the "liberal store" of politics.  Obama is a liberal's "HOT ITEM" within the pages of their "catalog".

re:BPB

You're exactly right...I saw Gibbs' exchange with Chris Wallace, and it was very telling. I enjoyed enormously watching Gibbs squirm his way through what I guess could be called an explanation. He had that "deer in the headlights" look, and his definition of what a "community organizer" is was really pathetic. The Dems misguided belief that Obama's meager experiences as a "community organizer" qualify him to be president, is laughable.

McCain Back to Making Bad Decisions

Well the Sarah Palin excellent decision could only last so long.  Now McCain is back to making stupid decisions.

He will be appearing at Columbia University (with Obama also there) on September 11.

John, why on Sept 11 do you have to go to a liberal university that previously gave legitimacy to an Iranian dictator?
