Words fail to express the depth of my disappointment that, because of the shortness of time and our mounting page count, we could not make space for an index in Baseball Prospectus 2009. Happily, we figured at the time that we’d be able to provide one to people online, right here on BP.com, and here it is.
So, pick your poison, and have fun navigating this year’s big beastie. Rest assured that we’ve heard what people have to say on the subject, and agree entirely. My sincere hope is that all future editions of the annual have an index.
I just commented during Will's chat yesterday that I was really missing the indexes. It is tough to remember who players played for last year sometimes.
As much as I enjoyed challenging myself to remember the last triple-A affiliate [Insert Random Journeyman] visited in '08, this should help immensely. Thanks as always for the annual, Christina (and co.)
Kristina, is there any possibility that the thickness (# of pages) can possibly be reduced by simply using a smaller font, and some smaller margins? While pleasing to the eye, the extra whitespace could be used to provide even more stellar content, and an index of course.
The BOOK is here! And now I have an Index too! Thank you, and especially thank you for getting it to me *before* my draft this season, rather than a day after.
Here's a question I have... are the fielding statistics in the book actually useful? Sometimes it seems the comments on each player are in direct opposition to the fielding statistics. Also, and I might be wrong, but it appears that some people's fielding numbers for 2006 and 2007 are different in the BP2009 book than in the BP2008 book.
Well, they did change the way they calculate the fielding numbers, based on play-by-play data, but did they go back and apply that to previous years as well?
Upon further review, there are a lot of comments this year that mention BABIP for pitchers and hitters. Maybe it'd be a good idea to include that as a stat for next year.
And feel free to charge a few extra bucks to include a few extra pages and an index. I'm sure none of us would mind.
Wow, no index in the book? Are you kidding me? I received mine from Amazon a few days ago, but I haven't had time to dig into it yet, so I hadn't noticed the index was missing. I do appreciate the mea culpa, and the opportunity to at least download it in PDF format, but the lack of an index in the print version is inexcusable.
Hi Christina,
I'm a little late on this one, but I think it is totally unacceptable for a reference book not to have an index, especially considering the odd (but semi-understandable) placement of players on former teams. If I want to look up projections for a player I shouldn't have to sleuth around for their transaction histories.
I ordered mine from B&N;, and so far this index is all I have... :-(
So did I and I got it yesterday - so keep the faith, it should be there soon!
I walked into my local B&N; on Monday and picked up my copy...
