PSN gets MAG beta, Savage Moon PSP

PlayStation Store Update: Client arrives for online shooter and portable tower defense title debuts as Sony slashes prices on an array of downloadable titles.

This week's retail release list for Sony systems is embarrassingly light, consisting entirely of Guitar Hero: Van Halen for the PlayStation 3. However, the PlayStation maker is compensating with an assortment of new releases and seasonal deals on its downloadable storefront.

Leading off the weekly PlayStation Store update is an offering gamers actually won't be able to play for a little while yet. Sony is letting users download the client program for the MAG open beta right now, although the actual testing period won't begin until January 4. Sony has the beta period slated to end the night of January 10, with the final retail release of MAG set for January 26.

PS3 owners looking for more immediate gratification have a number of new options at their disposal, starting with the fighting game Battle Fantasia from Arc System Works ($19.99). Although this marks the game's domestic debut for the PS3, Battle Fantasia was originally released on the Xbox 360 last year and on both platforms internationally.

The PlayStation Store is also adding the new PS3 block-based puzzler Polar Panic ($9.99) to its catalog, as well as a $19.99 PixelJunk bundle that includes the developer's first three games: PixelJunk Racers, PixelJunk Monsters, and PixelJunk Eden.

Sony is also padding out its selection of original PlayStation games with the 1997 port of the space combat game Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom. It turns out The Price of Freedom is $5.99, which buys a version of the game playable on the PS3, as well as the PSP, and features a cutscene-intensive storyline with live-action footage featuring the likes of Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell. The game's emphasis on video can be seen in its 2.25GB file size (nearly twice the size of Battle Fantasia).

Gamers on the go for the holidays can also check the PlayStation Store for new PSP releases, led by a portable edition of the tower defense game Savage Moon. The $9.99 download lets players protect a mining colony from vicious buglike creatures with the strategic placement of defenses. The PSP catalog is also bolstered by the arrival of Me & My Katamari ($19.99), Football Manager Handheld 2010 ($23.99), and Aedis Eclipse ($9.99).

Sony is also getting into the holiday spirit with price breaks throughout the PlayStation Store until January 7. Sega and Electronic Arts in particular have cut prices on many of their offerings, from add-on packs to full game downloads for both PS3 and PSP. A full list of the week's deals, new PlayStation Store content, including themes, wallpapers, demos, and add-on content is available on the official PlayStation Blog.

lol @ everyone getting thier panties all knotted up - saying "read the article, stupid" i didnt ask why it doesnt work or when... and to Vorodor21 - if this article took you 5 minutes to read, then youre the pot calling the kettle black.

There was also a completely separate news story stating that the MAG beta would be open starting Jan. 4th. Amazing how these geniuses see what they want to see (rather then actually taking 5 minutes and reading the whole story) and get all pissed when their stupid assumptions are wrong. Stupid people are leading this world straight to hell.

Embarrassingly light?! Do we seriously need a new game every single week for every single console? I mean, cut out all the Barbie Horse Adventure and Avatar: The Movie: The Video Game games and you don't have a GOOD game each week anyway. How could anyone go through a game a week anyway?

IT IS GOING TO BE PLAYABLE JAN 4 FFS!(I only used caps to gain attention) Read the F****** article people. They're letting people download it early so they don't have to wait hours before they can play it. But ofcourse I can't DL it until jan 4 so whatever.

You people really don't know how to read.

Quote from the article: "Sony is letting users download the client program for the MAG open beta right now, although the actual testing period won't begin until January 4." They are letting us download it earlier that way we don't have to wait two hours for it to download an install, leaving us more time to test it, as it is only going to be up for a week {actually 6 days}.

    Great observation skills there CharlieFubar.
It only says you can download the client and when it will be ready. It says nothing about playing it yet.

That does seem like a lot of people per team in one server. Maybe it wasn't a shooter? Could've been an Asia-only MMORPG. Those games usually have bigger PVP, I think.

But still, 2000 people in the same spot at once...

The PC game you are all talking about with 1000 players is probbly Planetside, the world could hold hold 1000+ but the indivdual island points, where the combat actuall happen, could hold just about 300 in open combat. Everything that MAG potential has is derived from Planetside.Planetside has been succesfully tested and played for the past 5+ years on PC. MAG brings that success to the PS3

The beta was given to THOUSANDS of people, including me we played endlessly, then they stopped it, only the people who pre-ordered Mag of GameStop are still in the beta, the DEMO is on the PSN now.

I thought the MAG beta has been on PSN for a month now.

But then, I don't have a PS3. I only knew about the beta via my subscription to PTOM.

I heard from my friends theres some PC game with over 1000+ people play at a time and theres character levels such as an RPG.... I suspect World of Warcraft, but im not sure.

OK, here's what's crazy. I was working in Korea when I first heard about MAG. I told some of my students about it and they were like,"What, 256? We have a game where we can have 1,000 people play on a team." Apparently they have competitions between Korea and China.

I'm still pumped for this though. It looks pretty awesome.

Something that alot of you aren't remembering is that when a superior officer gives an order the game tells you. I suspect for it'll be something along the lines of the voice that you heard in the battlefield bad company 2 beta. "Already were moving out!" instead its. "Take that bunker!" (Icon appears on screen) Ofcourse the more mics, the better. But do you honestly think they havent thought about ways for 256 people to communicate.

@ ThePurpleBubble quote! (Plus all the ranking and upgrading that CoD has pretty much made a requirement of all FPSs...)

Not true my freind , it is the battlefeild series of games that created all the rankings and achievements system way back in thwe days of BF2MC on the PC.

All IW did was hijack it for COD and make out like they started it when all cod did was copy most of the best things from other FPS around @ the time. COD is just a counterstrike clone but MAG is somthing entirly differant and pushes new boundries in FPS genre.Dont expect a run and gun game its full on tactical teamwork which is great.
im getting both MAG & BFBC2 as there both superior
    to what COD offers.
& for any cod fanboys i used to be in a pro game clan that played cod4 in a lleague and it was fun but I avoided MW2 for many reasons.

but i will comfirm BFBC2 beta was fracking awesome a must buy.
and MAG looks just as good roll on jan 4th huh. Yes it can only be dl from the USA psn store ATM but come jan 4th it should be on europe to .also after the 280mb dl it will update with a 1.8g update set some time aside as it takes a lon g time like a couple of hours.

I think I'll download Wing Commander IV now. I would love to play WC2 and WC3 as well, since the only one I beat for the original WC. I'm going to check it out right now. I might check out the M.A.G. beta as well. The game I can wait for is Planetside 2. The first game was so much fun when it first launched.

Also, why do so many people think MAG won't work?

Thousands have been play testing it and stressing the servers through multiple beta phases, and I can tell you all from experience that it works just as promised. Even the big 256 player matches (which have next to no lag).

I not in anyway criticizing the hype or the quality of the game. Its just questioning it being marketed, releasing at a good time, and the stability of those servers when the initial sales begin. Also sales for MW2 seem to say other wise about people holding off for MAG (already sold 4 million world wide and has already outsold every PS3 game with exception of GTA4). I truly hope for this game to succeed cause it aggravating how empty Warhawk, Socom, Fat Princess's servers when nobody is playing them. They just shut off the Calling All Cars servers. @ focus0894
Completely forgot Frontlines. The game was decent for what it was but yeah $60 was way too much for that game. It was a very fun rental.
