“Our goal is to be a nationwide leader in neuroscience. That requires us to become a national leader in research along with having a strong clinical program. Our planned operating room of the future will allow us to expand our horizons, handle a greater volume of cases, and explore more complex cases.”

Michael Muhonen, MD, Director of Neurosurgery, Medical Director, CHOC Neuroscience Institute

CHOC Children’s is the first and only dedicated 24-bed inpatient pediatric Neuroscience Unit in California staffed by neuroscience-trained nurses. We operate one of only a handful of epilepsy programs in the country providing continuous care for infants through adolescence.

The Neuroscience Institute encompasses both neurosurgery and neurology. These allied disciplines are vital to our cancer and orthopaedic programs. The collaborative efforts are producing miracles and giving children and families in our region access to the best neuroscience care available anywhere.

Overview

Some families seek a cure. Some seek only a chance. Together we pursue transformative outcomes—to change prognoses that may diminish lives to outcomes that a child and family can manage and embrace. This is our hope for families with children who are afflicted with neurological disorders like epilepsy, brain and central nervous system tumors, brain trauma, autism, and cerebral palsy.

The Neuroscience Institute at CHOC Children’s brings leading edge treatments to young patients throughout Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Counties. We are the only pediatric hospital in the region with an inpatient unit capable of handling complicated neurological and neurosurgical problems. This 24-bed unit has access to all the coordinated services of CHOC Children’s: a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a long-term video EEG lab, and an outpatient Epilepsy and Neurology Center. These facilities enable the Institute to manage more than 700 surgeries and procedures every year. The volume of patients coming from four counties, outside our state, even abroad, demands our excellence.

What is the Neuroscience Institute?

A simplified definition of neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system. But in reality, this field of practice is much broader in scope. The CHOC Children’s Neuroscience Institute consists of an array of subspecialties including neuro-oncology (brain tumors), the spine, neuromuscular conditions like muscular dystrophy, as well as neurological conditions such as epilepsy. The Institute encompasses both neurosurgery and neurology.

These allied disciplines are vital to our cancer and orthopaedic programs. The collaborative efforts are producing miracles and giving children and families in our region access to the best neuroscience care available anywhere.
