Things are peachy for the No. 1 Penguins, but it's the complete opposite for the floundering Blue Jackets.
What has Rick Nash signed up for?
When the Columbus Blue Jackets got Nash to commit to an eight-year contract last summer, it was just another indication the team was finally, truly heading in the right direction.

The Devils climb back to the top, but the once-lowly Wild are beginning to make a push.
Even if Gary Bettman was spinning the stats, there’s no way to put a shine on the fact Martin Havlat has just four goals this year.
But we’ll take a half-full approach here and point out Havlat does have five points over his past two games, doubling his goal output in that time and bringing his point total to 16 in 26 games.

Washington claims the No. 1 spot, but their division mates in Atlanta are turning heads.
It’s hard not to view the Atlanta Thrashers with a bit of hairy eyeball.
A team that’s made the playoffs just once since entering the league in 1999-00 presently sits sixth in the Eastern Conference.

With a healthy lineup and proven coaching staff the Preds are once again a surprising small-market team.
One of the best self-effacing lines you’ll hear from a team’s scouting staff when they’re being applauded for mining a late-round gem in the draft is, “If we’re so smart, why didn’t we take him sooner?”
Maybe that’s how the Nashville Predators feel about Shea Weber, who was the third defenseman they drafted in 2003.

Thanks in big part to the play of their goalies, the Blackhawks have soared to No. 2, behind only the San Jose Sharks.
Cristobal Huet and Antti Niemi: That’s the answer to the oft-heard pre-season question, “Who the heck is going to stop pucks in Chicago?”
When Nikolai Khabibulin left the Hawks as a free agent, many wondered whether the team would get the kind of goaltending required to be a top-flight NHL outfit.

The road-warrior Devils emerge as the NHL's No. 1, but Ryan Miller and the Sabres' winning ways can't be ignored.
About the only question being asked of the Northeast Division before the season was, “Who’s going to finish second?”
Maybe that’s still the most pertinent query, considering the Buffalo Sabres’ hot start.

San Jose takes over the top spot, but the Devils and their terrific road record are right on their heels.
Just imagine what’s going to happen when the New Jersey Devils start winning at home.
The Devils, who started the season with consecutive losses in their home rink, are 8-0-0 on the road and have won five straight.

The Los Angeles Kings are on fire and home to the league's leading scorer, but it's the defending champs on top.
Two guys who are (kind of) the face of hockey in their nation have the L.A. Kings rolling.
You won’t get much of an argument that Anze Kopitar is the king of Slovenian hockey, especially since he’s stormed out to the league scoring lead with 10 goals and 21 points in 12 games.

The Penguins remain at No. 1, but Ottawa is on the move thanks to its solid play early on.
Maybe a strong finish is worth something after all.
In the final third of every NHL season, some team previously thought to be completely out of the playoff chase suddenly starts playing .

The Penguins take over top spot; do the Canucks have the guts to overcome life without a Sedin?
Ok Henrik, now’s your chance.
Losing Daniel Sedin for up to six weeks with a broken foot is definitely bad news for the Vancouver Canucks, but could turn out to be a terrific development for his brother Henrik – assuming the twins have money on which one ends his NHL career with more points.

Philly may be No. 1, but with a quick 2-0 start to the season, Colorado has knocked off two big contenders to kick off 2009-10.
Joe who?
OK, let’s not get crazy, but let’s also give fans of the Colorado Avalanche a chance to be a little excited here.
A 2-0 start probably isn’t indicative of how the Avs will fare this season, especially with the team set to play 11 of its next 13 on the road.

In our season-end edition of the power rankings, the B's take the top spot, but many eyes are on the Devils.
It’s hard to imagine a team finishing with a franchise-record 51 wins and the league’s fifth-best record being in the midst of a downer, but that’s where the Devils are heading into the playoffs.
