Pac-Man the most recognisable game character

Not Mario or Sonic
Pac-Man has beaten Mario to claim the Guiness Book Of World Records most recognisable video game character.

Game Informer has plucked some of the more interesting records from the latest edition of the US book, which you'll probaly get (the UK edition) under the Christmas tree tomorrow as your Gran will think you'll like it because it's about games.

"Most Recognizable Video Game Character: Mario? Sonic? Mega Man? Nope, it's Namco's very own Pac-Man. 94 percent of American consumers recognise the pellet-gobbler, edging out Nintendo's plumber by just one percent."

A close call. Is Pac-Man a worthy winner in your opinion? Who does your Gran know best? Ask her tomorrow.

That's becuse he looks like a pie. Americans know a lot about pies... what with all the pie-charts made in offices. (See I didn't go there Razz)

Pac-man is older so it's understandable that more people know him.

Well I've never seen a bright yellow pie chart storming an assault....so, yes, I suppose he is the most recognisable game character....ever.

I'd be interested to see the statistics, demographics, and perhaps a statisctical analysis; I'm quite sure that many younger gamers wouldn't list Pac-Man.

Stands to reason really. Even the youngest gamers will have encountered Pacman somewhere on their travels - there's plenty of remakes on home consoles and portable devices now. And since he was one of the earliest gaming icons in the world, he's been around for ages and been in plenty of adverts when gaming technology was new.

I'd put Mario as a close second, but I bet more middle-aged people could name Pacman than him or Sonic.
