After he got the job as new head coach of the Peoria Rivermen last week, Rick Wamsley checked around with some of his coaching buddies for advice.

The consensus was that if Wamsley was going to run his own show, the best way to do it was by being himself.

Get ready for the fun and games to begin.

Wamsley, who has never been a head coach before, has built a deserved reputation as one of the most colorful figures in hockey, whether he's showering referees with a few choice words from the press box, scorching goalies who allow soft scores or just regaling listeners with tales from his 12-year NHL goaltending career.

"It's a blood rivalry in the best and worst sense of the word. In Michigan, it's Michigan State. In Boston it's these two rivals." -- Jerry York

Last Friday afternoon, the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic showcased the Bruins and Flyers at Fenway Park. Come Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, the 248th battle in the classic rivalry between Boston College and Boston University -- the last two national champions -- takes place at Fenway -- the first outdoor college game in the modern era of New England hockey.

At 4 p.m. ET, the women's teams from Northeastern and New Hampshire play in the first women's outdoor game.

There were 38,112 on hand last week for the sold-out 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic extravaganza at Boston's Fenway Park.

The Sun Life Frozen Fenway Hockey East rendition this week will not only have the same number of fans saturating Fenway, but also an even heartier provincial flavor.

"It's going to be jammed," said BC coach Jerry York. "Just think: a BU-BC game under the Fenway lights on a Friday night."

"We might just dress in our dorm rooms and walk over here," joked Jack Parker about his campus's proximity just across Commonwealth Avenue from Fenway Park.

Jim Craig played for Parker -- before leading the U.S. team to Olympic gold in Lake Placid in the "Miracle on Ice" in 1980 -- a career that included three Beanpots tournaments, and winning the national championship in 1978.

To no one's surprise, the San Jose Sharks were on top of the Pacific Division as the season reached the halfway mark. But the teams chasing them were very much a shock.

While the Dallas Stars were inconsistent and the Anaheim Ducks disappointing, the Phoenix Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings played like solid playoff contenders who are capable of making the Sharks work for their third consecutive division title. Both were in the top eight in the West.

The Stars had their ups and downs and were plagued by an inability to win shootouts -- an area that had been one of their strengths during the first four seasons of the penalty-shot tiebreaker. The Ducks have three of the NHL's top players in forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry and defenseman Scott Niedermayer, but have struggled to keep the puck out of their net and are the worst team in the conference on the road (5-11-4 at the 41-game mark).

A rare meeting between Original Six teams highlights what should be an exciting 10-game NHL schedule on Thursday night.

The Chicago Blackhawks, who sit atop the Central Division with 63 points, visit the Boston Bruins at TD Garden at 7 p.m. ET. Boston (22-13-7) has earned points in seven of its last 10 games and resides in second place in the Northeast Division.

Two other games also begin at 7 p.m. -- the New York Rangers return to the ice following Wednesday's 5-2 win against the Dallas Stars as they travel to Atlanta to take on the reeling Thrashers. John Anderson's club is 0-6-3 in its last nine games -- including 0-5-2 on a seven-game trip that ended with a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Tuesday -- and has fallen 14 points behind the Washington Capitals in the Southeast Division. Meanwhile, the Caps (25-11-6), who promoted Alex Ovechkin to team captain on Tuesday before beating Montreal 4-2, host the Ottawa Senators in a game that can be seen on TSN in Canada.

Thirty minutes later, the Battle of Pennsylvania resumes in Pittsburgh as the Penguins host the Philadelphia Flyers at Mellon Arena. The Flyers climbed over the .500 mark on Wednesday with a 6-2 win on home ice against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This showdown can be seen on the NHL Network in the U.S. Also at 7:30, the Montreal Canadiens host the Florida Panthers at the Bell Centre (RDS in Canada).

Stars center Mike Ribeiro was taken to a hospital following a scary high-sticking incident with the Rangers forward Christopher Higgins.

With 4:28 to go in the second period, Ribeiro took the stick in the throat and stayed on the ice for several minutes while trainers attended to him. He was able to skate off under his own power, but did not return to the game.

"He's got something wrong with his throat, but we got him at the hospital now making sure everything’s OK," Stars coach Marc Crawford said. "It's a contusion, and they're just making sure his airways are all clear."

Higgins was given a two-minute penalty, but Crawford wondered if perhaps it should have been four minutes with Ribeiro suffering an injury on the play.

"The San Jose forward line (of Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau) got stronger, stronger and stronger and it became clear to us that they would be on the team." -- Team Canada's executive director for the 2010 Winter Olympics, Steve Yzerman

Just because his daunting task of selecting Team Canada is now complete, Steve Yzerman isn't about to kick up his legs while sipping on a fruity cocktail poolside for the next month.

Yzerman, Team Canada's executive director for the 2010 Winter Olympics, at least allowed himself a few days in the Florida sun with his family after naming the 23-man roster Canada will take to the Games, but he had to go to British Columbia earlier this week to bury his maternal grandmother, who passed away at age 95.

When NHL.com caught up with Yzerman on Wednesday afternoon, he was on his way back to Detroit, where he planned to settle in and watch a lot of hockey.

Really, what else can the man do?

Fantasy Forecast for Wednesday, January 6

TUESDAY'S ROUNDUP:

Why is goaltending so important in fantasy? It's all about reliability ... and wins.

On Tuesday, the Senators pulled their starting goalie for the second consecutive game. Brian Elliott allowed 4 goals on 16 shots in the first period and was replaced by Pascal Leclaire (19 saves) in a 4-1 home loss against Boston. On Sunday, Leclaire (23 games, 11-7-1, 2.84 GAA, owned in 54 percent of all Yahoo! leagues) permitted 3 goals on 10 shots and was pulled in the second period for Elliott (24, 10-10-3, 2.86 GAA, 17 percent), who stopped 10 of 11 shots to earn a come-from-behind 7-4 home win against the Flyers. Ottawa has now made an in-game goaltending change five times this season.
