World News Now
Weeknight mornings on WCHS-TV8

World News Now ABC News' "World News Now" premiered in January, 1992. In May, 2000, the broadcast became the first network news program to be streamed live on the Internet, with a non-stop view of network news from behind the scenes.

In addition to bringing its viewers the morning's top stories and breaking news from around the world, this unique, live, interactive broadcast brings web participants and the anchors into an ongoing conversation on everything from the important issues of the day to the mundane -- favorite recipes or opinions on pop culture.

The broadcast, which is anchored by Liz Cho and Derek McGinty, can be seen live from 2:00-5:00 a.m., ET, weekdays on the ABC Television Network (check local listings for actual times), or on the program's companion website, live from 2:00-3:30 a.m., ET.

In a recent article (7/14/01) the Los Angeles Times said "World News Now" may be the only news show on television that concludes its last show each week with its own polka, performed by an accordionist who wanders the set delivering lyrics about viewers who don't wear pants.

In the past the Times has called "World News Now" "... by far the class of the ... overnight network entries ... a beautifully produced, casual and comfortable program with a perfect tone for the relaxed time of night." TV Guide says: "Stay awake for ... snappy dialogue and wry commentary. A hip attitude pervades the show." And the Virginian-Pilot says: "'World News Now' is ... just too good for TV."

"World News Now" offers its viewers news coverage and features not always provided on traditional news programs. Some of the regular in-depth features include:

"Their TV News"
A glimpse at how important stories of the day are reported in the cities and regions where the news is happening.

"World News Then"
A nostalgic look at how ABC News covered important stories of the past

"Morning Business Report"
A live update on the morning's latest business news from around the globe -- reported by the BBC.

Technology updates from experts in computers, wireless devices, electronic and video gaming and gadgets

Weekly movie reviews from People Magazine's senior film critic, Leah Rozen

Humorous features and commentary from resident accordianist Barry Mitchell

"World News Now" also excerpts the best of the ABC News magazines and daily news broadcasts, featuring award-winning reporting from the best journalists in the business.

"World News Now" goes boldly where no overnight newscast has gone before. As the Rutgers Review says, the broadcast is "... possibly the greatest program ever made that is not a Star Trek series."
