SAFETY TIPS

MTA Metro-North Railroad Evacuation Instructions

SEVERAL STEPS THAT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

If you were on a train involved in an accident, would you know how to get to safety? Getting out of our trains in the rare event of an emergency is a safe and simple process. Read on and you'll know what to do.

First, listen! Our train crews are instructed in handling emergency situations, and they will make announcements telling you what's going on and how to proceed.

If possible, remain inside the train car! It's the safest place to be; outside, trains may still be traveling on adjacent tracks; the third rail may still be "live."

If you can't remain inside the train car, your first option is to move to the next car. Calmly walk to the end of the train that is farthest from the scene of the accident, and exit through the door leading to the next car.

If you do have to get out of the train car, you can open the doors. Open the Emergency Exit Panel located in the vestibule area of the car. (The panel is clearly labeled with a instructional sticker telling you how to open it.) Once the panel is open, slide the red lever to open the doors.

If you cannot exit through these side doors, use the emergency window exits. Each emergency exit window is clearly marked by a fluorescent instructional sticker above it. To open the window, simply pull the red handle to remove the rubber molding that holds it in place, and pull the second black handle on the glass toward you to remove the window.

Most of our cars have four emergency window exits; familiarize yourself with their locations.

Remember: Metro-North's employees receive training in emergency situations on a regular basis. They know what to do. After all, our first priority is your safety.

ALWAYS...

Always concentrate on watching your step when getting on or off the train. Watch the gap!

Always use the stair handrails, especially after rain/snow, when steps and platforms can become wet and slippery.

Always use the handholds located near the car doors when standing on a moving train.

Always use the overpass/underpass/designated walkway to get from your station parking lot to the platform.

Always stand back from platform edges.
