NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Daniel H. Schulman, chief executive officer of Virgin Mobile USA and a member of the Board of Trustees of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, was inducted today as a member of the university’s Board of Governors.

Schulman, who lives in Warren, N.J., remains a trustee through 2013. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee and on the Governors’ committees for Budget and Finance, and also Intercollegiate Athletics.

Schulman joined Virgin Mobile USA, of Warren, as founding CEO in 2001 with almost 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. He has led the company from its concept stage and national launch in 2002 to become one of the country’s leading wireless carriers, with more than 5 million customers and $1.3 billion in annual sales.

“Mr. Schulman had the vision and business acumen to build a company into a telecommunications industry leader,” said Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick. “He has served with distinction as a trustee of the university, and we now look forward to his contributions on Rutgers’ Board of Governors.”

Before joining Virgin Mobile, now a public company trading on the New York Stock Exchange, Schulman was CEO of priceline.com, where he established one of the most recognized brands on the Internet. He also served more than 18 years at AT&T, becoming the youngest member of the company’s most senior executive team, the AT&T Operations Group. When he left AT&T, he was president of the $22 billion core consumer long distance business.

Born and raised in Newark, Schulman later attended Princeton High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Middlebury College and an MBA in finance from New York University.

Schulman is on the board of directors of Symantec and Flextronics, both traded on NASDAQ, and also is a board member of Autism Speaks. He is the son of S. Ruth Schulman, associate dean of Rutgers' Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) for 25 years before retiring in 1999, and the late Mel Schulman. The Schulman family generously created the Ruth and Mel Schulman Endowed Fellowship in honor of Ruth's leadership at GSAPP and in memory of Mel.

Established in 1766, Rutgers is one of the nation’s premier research universities, serving more than 50,000 students on campuses in Camden, Newark and New Brunswick.
