The Frost & Sullivan Honorees

By Ellen Gibson

Even in deep recession, companies are hitting the market with products that are truly new and improved. One of the most innovative sectors is security, based on the latest Excellence in Industrial Technologies Awards, which consulting firm Frost & Sullivan handed out in April.

In the security category—one of several that Frost & Sullivan honors—Avigilon and JVC won for high-definition surveillance cameras that offer super-magnification capability. Biometrics showed it has come a long way since fingerprinting. The winning companies in this area, Lockheed Martin and WCC of the Netherlands, are doing pioneering work in facial-recognition software and iris scans and are developing sophisticated algorithms for matching traits to individuals in vast databases. Also among the honorees was a handheld device from Scent Detection Technologies that was used at last year's Summer Olympics for sniffing out explosives.

To select the finalists, Frost & Sullivan interviewed executives from industry and government, measured corporate financial performance, and evaluated product development and marketing efforts. Here's a look at all the security companies that came home with awards this year.
