Kobe Bryant moving up in the record books

Though it was far from his best performance, Kobe Bryant's 22 points in the Lakers' 88-79 victory over the Houston Rockets moved his total past Patrick Ewing for 15th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

With 24,837 points, Bryant likely will move up in the record books fairly soon. He is 355 points behind Jerry West, who also holds the Lakers' all-time record with 25,192 points. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, another Lakers great, is on top of the list with 38,387 points.

So how many games will it take for Bryant to surpass West's place in the record books? Will Bryant be on the top of the list by the end of his career?

Kobe surpasses West by March 1st. Surpassing Kareem? It's possible, though unlikely. At 30 points per game, Kobe could pass Kareem by the time he's say 35 or 36 yrs old. Hmmmmm.
-
He could pass Jordan by the time he's 33 yrs old making the GOAT conversation alot more interesting.

We’re The Freaking World Champion Lakers, Who the Hell are You

Kobe will be up to 11th by the end of the year.

He will most likely retire third in terms of scoring.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!!

So Kobe has had a few rough outings after a blistering pace on the road trip, no big deal.

The important thing is that the team gets their defense cohesiveness together this month - and of course, that offense - but when you have the weapons that the Lakers have, the defense needs to be top priority

The good news is that the Lakers HAVE had some games, even recently, where they're gelling for extended periods of time.

The upside is that I've yet to see these guys firing on all cylinders for more than a few minutes at a time - but when you're running 12 of them on 900 bhp, it's not necessary for them to run to their max...

But I'm still waiting.

Phil "X" Jackson will have these guys as prepped as possible.

I started getting calls from the repo man again, he's been asking when he can reposses the 70 win bandwagon and I told him I'm not ready to part with it, but I told him it certainly looks like he'll be stopping by before March is out... until then, I'm riding that thing until the wheels fall off!!!!

Tonight's going to be an interesting game because Bynum is playing with fire again and Chris Kaman is a better center (right now) than Andrew.

The war in the post will be intriguing to watch.

Go Clippers!!!!

GO LAKERS!!!!!

bynum vs. kaman should be interesting.

Yo Mamba, my brotha!!! You the man!!!

Another poor shooting night by the bench...

This is why I voted against JF starting, instead of off the bench.

One day he's hot... the next... cold as ice.

I'm not saying that he needs to score 24 a game, but needs to be in the double digits at least.

The way Rockets play is perfect for Bynum, because Andrew flourishes in a take your time, half court offence. Unless he has a super quick big man to defend him like Howard, or a quick double team when he gets the ball, Andrew is going to be neigh unstoppable down low, and I mean every time. That's what he does. He has a slow, Elden Campbell like delivery with about 20 more moves than Elden.

I've also noticed that when shots go up, Bynum often does not even bother to turn his body toward the basket to get in a rebounding position. Forget timing and jumping and all that, I saw several instances where Bynum was watching the ball in the air looking OVER HIS SHOULDER with his body facing the other direction so he could get out on the break. He will never be a rebounding force with this approach, but he will be a dynamic scorer.

Lamar! There may be more consistent players in the regular season that Odom, but no bench player in today's NBA can match a line like Odom's last night. If LeBron is King, maybe Odom's the Buddha. 17/19/9

Wes

MM,

GREAT LIVE-BLOGGING JOB! You're no longer a virgin, you're nearly a hardened vet!

Someone asked if you're Filipino. That will of course start when you begin your post-game video wrap-ups! To do so, just clone yourself and shave the hair off of one of the clones. Point the camera at yourself and jest.

Didn't they tell you about that part of the job?

Seriously, do you think there is a potential danger with MM (whose nickname has not been established) posting too much? Here is what I mean. I like to post and then check back for comments. But if in the moment that I post, a new thread / post is started, the odds are that the previous post is yesterday's news. Get it? This causes reposts.

So I would vote to let a post gather a few comments before moving on to the next. I think 2 a day is adequate. What?!?!??! What thinks ye all?

Also, that was a statement game. When you can win with your second best player on the bench, the league must take note! PJ said, "Don't make me put Ammo on the floor." And they didn't.

Lastly, Ariza beat Artest in every stat category last night. I am pissed that he played games with the contract, but I miss ole Ariza. I have a championship shirt with just him, Kobe, and Pau.

I hope that the rest of the Lakers team looks at Ariza and sees him making more on a losing proposition and LEARNS THE ARIZA LESSON. Traitors never prosper.

Finally, in the pre-game interview, Artest looked like he had just been hit with a 2 by 4 the moment before. I think the guy is still dazed. He must have really walloped himself.

Will Bynum and Pau learn to play together? If not, PLAY PAU AND BYNUM SEPARATELY PHIL!

GOOD JOB MARK !!!

GOOOoooOOOO LAKERS !!!!

Good Morning everyone!

I didn't get a chance to catch most of the game last night, but what little I saw I was impressed. I'm glad to see that LO is starting to put things together. Now, if we could only get a few more rebounds for Socks...

Good morning Mamba24 & the fabulous Laker morning CRUE!!!!

GAME DAY BABY - YYYYEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

MM - great job last night! I know you're probably sore today from the work out, but make sure you get your treatment done right today so you'll be ready to go tonight!

MM - also - just so you know - the email I used last night is my home one, and this one here is my work. So - when you're busting trolls you don't get confused! I would hate to have to sic the Sherrif on you so early in your new career. (But I will if I have to....)

I really haven't got much to comment on the game last night. I actually ended up watching it again (yes - my name is jamf and I'm a Lakerholic) and wasn't as irritated the 2nd time around by the defensive mistakes or turnovers. Maybe it's cuz I already knew the game's outcome (ok that's probably it) but I could also be more objective. And I have to tell you - it wasn't as bad as it sounded on the chat. So - I'm just going to focus ahead for tonight and be grateful that we have the best team in the NBA, the best player on the planet, the best coach in the world and a Laker squad that plays with a hell of a lot of heart and grit. It's a great time to be a Laker fan!!

Now - say it with me (phred that means you) - GO LAKERS!!!!

Nothing but another title will suffice.

OK, Mamba24, what's the SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT you promised us for today? Don't let us down, bro. Give us something special, like that you and Medina are saddling up to ride herd together over this blog.

Yeah, baby! The MamBros taking over for the KamBros! Mamba24 takes roll, and M2B2 (MM, Blazing Blogmaster) keeps it rolling with chat, videos, interviews, and whateva.

The MamBros ride...

Outta Towners

Last night they ran another in the Golden Days, Purple Nights series. The Showtime era stars gave props to KAB.

Magic said, game on the line, he'd take Kareem over any player that's ever played. I believe him. His retirement, marked the end of Showtime.

Back in the present, Norm Nixon said if he were Andrew Bynum, he'd listen intently to every syllable Kareem uttered. We've said it before, but what an opportunity for Andrew to learn from the best ever. Given Norm's comment, it sounds like there might have been an issue there.

Thanks for the early morning update Mark.

The long comments post are really annoying. Someone needs to find the definition of comment and learn it or this blog will become hijacked by a bunch of morons.

AND NOW THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT...
MARK MEDINAH...HE'S OUT FREAKIN STANDING!!!
I pledge my loyalty and fealty to him and this Blog of which I was just about to send my Last Roll Call!!
Treat him right folks, he's a keeper!!!
Mamba24

Gaucho420,

We've had that discussion already. If you are calling Mamba "the heart and soul of the Lakers blog" 24 "annoying" or a "moron" perhaps you'd better go to another blog.

If you decide to stay, find someone you relate to, read their comments, strike up a relationship with them, and LEARN TO SCROLL!!

GOooooOOO LAKERS !!!!

Mamba24, awesome roll call man!

Glad to see you doing your thing once again.

Ugly win yesterday. Don't look now, the Clippers might be looking to make a statement against us for the umpteenth time.

Bynum vs the Beast

For purposes here, the term "Beast" is on loan to define a man who has ugly he hasn't used yet.

Sat at the end of the Portland bench the other night and got an up close and personal look at Kaman as he sat on the table in front of me. Surprising, actually, that a guy that looks that crazed, doesn't play that way. He had a small on him all night and scored proficiently from midrange but never dominated the paint.

The Clips are better. Davis is distributing, Gordon is fo' real, and they'll be as long as we are tonight. But they won't have 24. He doesn't do 2 mediocre games in a row.

Magic said, game on the line, he'd take Kareem over any player that's ever played. I believe him. His retirement, marked the end of Showtime.Posted by: VMan | January 06, 2010 at 09:01 AM

Yeah but don't expect Kobe to say he'd take Shaq over any player he ever played with. Political correctnes can only go so far. LOl!

First - here is the exact reason why we love Kobe so much:

Asked if the additional punishment would cause him to reduce his minutes, Bryant replied, ''What, am I going to get a bib and a rattle?''

Second - KEIFO!!! I miss our "rodent alerts".... :)

Third - gaucho420 - apparently you're new here and don't know what flavor the kool-aid is. If you don't like the long posts, scroll past them. It's the little wheel-thingy on your mouse. Yes you may wear it down to the size of a cheerio, but that's your problem not ours.

I am so amazed that I finally got some draft picks right. 3 of the 6 possibilities I had for the Lakers' pick in last year's draft (a pick they sold) were Omri Casspi, Patty Mills and Jonas Jerebko. The other three were Nick Calathes, Emir Preldzic and someone else I can't remember. What's the secret formula? I was looking for fits for the triangle from all around the world, specifically guys with size (so even if they didn't have defensive skills yet, they can still play effectively in a team-defense role), guys who can run the fast break despite being tall for their position, or I was looking for high scoring PG types from outside the States.

And the one I wanted most for our draft position, was Omri Casspi. Oh, and please don't check the blog history to verify this.

Wes

Gaucho 420,sorr but this blog has already been hijacked by a bunch of morons. I proudly count myself among them.

Why are the Lakers tough to beat? Pau is out. Kobe is playing left handed. Artest is just getting his land legs back.

But Odom and Bynum step up and fill the void. The defensive intensity is there, and the Lakers lead for 48 minutes against a tenacious Houston team. And give Houston credit. They are my second favorite NBA team for the way they play, having lost the 3 marquee names from last year.

Also I like the new Sasha, who comes in, plays hard, gets to loose balls, does the little things and focuses less on shooting. He could be a real asset.

Welcome again Mark, nice to have a full-time leader again!

Tom Daniels

Memo to Josh Powell: You are a real nice face up, spot up shooter. Love to see you take those. You cannot shoot off the dribble, with a hand in your face or falling away. You are not an offensive force. Watch film of AC Green and Horace Grant and model your game accorginly.

Just a note that one of the things we all loved about the day after a game was the Extra! Extra! posts that the KamBros used to put together, which included links to all of the main news articles such as Kevin Ding’s great post about how Jerry Buss had the vision and moxie to bring Lamar Odom back which was why we won last night. Many of us would prefer just a single post every day that is then updated with news during the day as well as new posts and comments. Great to see you making posting a new thread at 2:00 a.m. That is the kind of dedication that we truly appreciate. And for the record, I do believe you can succeed even if you are not a Lakers fan. Of course, I will expect you to become a Lakers fan after coming in contact with the blog. It is kind of like Swine Flu. Once exposed, you are extremely vulnerable to become infected and become a Lakerholic.
- - - - - - - - - -
Tom

Would I be surprised if Kobe passes Kareem for all time scoring list? Well lets put it this way Kobe has a reputation of doing things that are impossible, just look at who has the most buzzer beaters to win the game this year, look at the 4th ring he just got last summer when most critics doubted he will win another, and look at how he has progressed into a leader and a team member when most said it was never going to happen. This I am certain Kobe will most likely pass Jordan as far as rings and championships he is only 31 and has a good five more years if he keeps his shape and dedication of practice, which knowing Kobe he is already focusing on when he gets older and losing his rapid speed by working with Elijah this past summer for better shot selection and foot work, when most player after a championship would focus on partying it up and enjoying the moment. One thing is for sure is that Kobe strives for perfection and he would not stop until he is satisfied, only one other player in the past two decades that had the same mentality and had the same work ethics. He wore the #23 for the Bulls most of his career, and went by the first name of Michael! I will leave with saying this about Kobe some love him, some hate him, some can never beat him, but once he laces up for his last game and takes that last shot and leaves the game for good, everyone would realize that we have just witnessed greatness which does not happen too often. Unfortunately for Labron he waited and waisted most of his career with a team that never partnered him up with any help otherwise he might have been equal of rings with Kobe!

hi mark medina. im one of the many lurkers of this blog.
just want to say welcome to our community!

It will take between 12 - 14 games before Kobe will surpass the Logo for total points. At his current ppg avg, it will take about 12 games. I will make the assumption that he will avg about 25 ppg in his next 14 games and will guess that he takes the top slot from the Logo in the Jan. 31st game against Boston. Given the Lakers schedule, it is highly likely that he accomplishes his scoring feat on the road than at home where we can give him a big standing ovation.

2ND GREATEST POST OF THE WEEK :
Correction: This blog was built by the greatest collection of inspired morons the world has ever seen.I wouldn't have it any other way.Posted by: Jon K. | January 06, 2010 at 10:17 AM

STOP IT! STOP IT NOW!! HAHAHAHHAHHA!!!! MAMA DON'T LET YOU BABY GROW UP TO BE A MORON!! OH, MY GOD I CAN'T TAKE IT! IS THERE A MORON IN THE HOUSE? ROFLMFAO!!!!

M&M

i will be humble and i will remind my fellow bloggers that yesterday as soon as MB announced that MM is the new Blog Host, i welcomed him with "Funky Cold Medina" and i asked if he comes with purple and gold M%M's

actually Mark, my daughter's name has the same initials, what is no big deal. but coincidentally the numbers of the letters in her name are the same, 4+6.

and

YES, LakerTom,

i agree that the KBros were not Lakers fans, except they had a JOB and they tried to do their best because it was their trampoline to be part of the BSPN. do we remember that they were Kobe haters? now they can flaunt it successfully with the LeBronze proselytes.

Kobe has a 25.3 PPG average for his career.

if we take away the first 3 years, his average is like 28.6. kareems average is 24.6 for his career and he played 1560 games. kobe played 982.

at the 25.3 pace, if he plays 1560 games like kareem he will end up with 39,445 points, the highest ever.

but, because we know KOBE, he will want to reach 40,000. at the 25 pace, he will need 1600 games.

so he will need 7 seasons after this one or maybe 8 with some games missing.

HE WILL DO IT

im posting here again to renew my allegiance to this blog.
add me in again please. =)Posted by: qs | January 06, 2010 at 10:37 AM

THIS WAY LIES MADNESS! ROFLAO!!

Gaucho420,

You must be a new poster to call the soul of the blog an "M" (can't even say it cuz' it is out of place in our community). Hang on and be nice to our brother eventually you get use to it and proud that there is a Mamba24.

Mamba24, forgive them for they don't know what they are saying. Now put Gaucho 420 in the dog pound or in NO. 1 in the next roll call. Let him cry, let him cry for calling our blog savior as "M".

LMAO!! EDWIN STOP It! STOP IT I SAY! HAHA!

Goucho420, your irresponsible bashing of the sweetest of men, the flamboyant, all heart, full passioned and pure Mamba 24 just has inspired me 420 bad names that I should call you with.

That man is the soul beating here. The trumpet of angels singing Laker anthems... You dared to' define that... Moron?

Seriously.

Apologize.

Or be ready to be fairly bashed by everyone carrying the Mighty Mamba24 out as our Laker Aedos.

Mamba... We Looooove you :) don't mind occasional eretics.

Mamba24,

I hate to correct you but you are short changing the Lakers. The Lakers actually have 4 HOF Coaches not 2. They would be John Kundla, Bill Sharman, Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. And if the HOF ever wakes up and smells the coffee then Tex Winter would be the 5th.

OH MY, Zaira I think I'm going to swoon. Thank you me lady.
Mamba24

I think Kobe will retire as the all time leader in scoring. It took Kareem 20 years to get to 38,387 points. After 20 years, Kobe will still only be 38.

Unlike all other players that came before, Kobe is not on a downward spiral, he is better this year than he has ever been. Kareem, on the other hand, probably peaked in his THIRD YEAR and declined gradually for the next 17. Michael Jordan probably peaked in 95-96, at about age 33, and declined a bit over the next 2 years, and an awful lot after that.

I think the next DECADE of Kobe will really separate him from all others.

Now this is getting ridiculous but if I have to do it I have to do it...OUT FREAKING STANDING DYMANDAVE!!
Thanks bro, it'll be rewitten in the next Roll call. See that's what I'm talking about, so much knowledge in this Blog one does not have to go anywhere else for sports Info!

*kissing politely Mamba 24 cheek* :)
duty, my Chief Commander of Roll Calls. Duty and pleasure, my Friend.

Btw, Kobe will take on West in 12 games to me. About the final landing as his career ends ( translation: when the basket I love will lose his infinite light...) don't wanna state anything fearing it may bring him bad luck. He can do everything. But even not ending first he would still legendary. He already is.

How lucky are we to be watching the premiere player in NBA history, in his prime, doing his thing right here in L.A. for our Lakers...

C'mon people, we gotta stop and reflect a bit. This is a special time in the history of the most storied franchise in sports history (have the Yankees been to HALF of all World Series of all time? I think not...). Right here, right now, we have the opportunity night in and night out to admire a true master, the single greatest scoring threat this league has ever seen. We are watching a Babe Ruth, a Willie Mays, a Jesse Owens, a Jackie Robinson, a Jim Brown, a Picasso, a Michaelangelo. Greatness. Yes, a special time this is. One day god willing all of our grandkids/great-grandkids will be asking us just how good the mamba was, what it was like to watch him play.

As for the scoring record, if for some reason Kobe comes close but falls short I lay blame squarely on the coaching-abomination that Dull Harris was. He singlehandedly deprived Laker fans of the first year-and-a-half of Kobe's career, having him ride the pine even though at 17 he was already better than all-star Eddie Jones. The Cap was one of a kind and a fitness marvel, but his center position allowed him to succeed for so many seasons. A guard like Kobe has to exert much more energy throughout his career, that is why their bodies break down earlier than centers. Kobe though is a special, once-a-lifetime talent, if ANYONE can play through injury and prolong their career, the training-freak black mamba can.

The best thing is, we can all sit back and watch in amazement as Kobe chases down and most likely passes all-time records. Yes, this is a special time to be an NBA fan, and as Laker fans we are the most fortunate of all...
