IHA 2010 Player Development Camps

Ice Hockey Australia successfully hosted their 5th annual residential player development camps at Newcastle’ Hunter Ice Skating Stadium and Myuna Bay NSW Rec & Sport facilities from the 03rd – 10th January for 44 midget players, which included 15 x 2010 National U18 Youth Team Players who will shortly be travelling to Kiev, Ukraine to participate in IIHF’s 2010 World U18 Division II Championships,  followed by 54 bantam players from the 10th to the 17th January 2010.

The camp’s coaching staff was led by IHA’s National U18 Youth Team Coach Pier-Alexandre Martin, who coached his team to a Gold Medal performance at the 2009 World U18 Division III Championships in Chinese Taipei and promotion to 2010’s Division II championship, including Canadian Technical Ice Skating Instructor - Debbie Strome from Cranbrook BC, Goaltending Instructor - Alain Shank from Ottawa, Canada and Finnish Off-ice Instructor - Sami Mantere. Additional coaching was supplied by National Youth Team Assistant Coach, Steven Lindsay, and New South Wales State Team Coaches, Amelia Matheson & John Harvey, Western Australia State Team Coach, Brendan Lowick,  Victoria State Team Coach, Jeremy Muir and Adelaide Adrenalin Goaltender, Olivier Martin.

After five days of gruelling on and off-ice instruction the players were put through IHA’s Skills & Agility Testing Program Saturday morning to measure and evaluate their skill level and speed with and without the puck.
The day ended with the camp’s annual inter-squad game on Saturday evening where Team Bauer and Team Easton squared off for bragging rights as to the camp’s annual camp champions. Both the midget and bantam games were a closely fought encounter with the winner decided in the dying seconds of each game by one goal.

The week ended Sunday morning with one-on-one player evaluations prior to the players departing the camp for the players return trip home and their continued preparations for the 2010 season.

The coaching staff had no such luck as during their brief rest period they commenced to prepare for 62 pee wee players and another 6 additional coach/supervisors arriving Sunday evening. The Pee Wee Camp will be led by Head Coach, Simon Holmes, IHA’s National U20 Junior Team Coach, who just recently returned from the World U20 Division III Championships where he coached his team to a Gold Medal Performance and promotion to Division II and a number of state coaches from around the country. More to follow regarding the Pee Wees on the completion of their camp.

The players and coaches wish to extend their appreciation to Addlon Trading and the Ice Hockey Australia Board for their ongoing support on furthering the skill development of the participating players and coaches.
