Former Liberal MLA Garnet Brown dead at 79



Garnet Brown, president of brokerage firm A.G. Brown and Sons Ltd. and a former Liberal MLA and cabinet minister died Thursday.

He was 79.

Mr. Brown founded the food commodity business with his father in the 1950s. He was also a co-founder of Halifax Cablevision, and a founder and director of Dartmouth Cable Television.

Mr. Brown was the MLA for the former Halifax-Eastern Shore constituency from 1969 to 1978. He won a byelection in 1969, and general elections in 1970 and 1974.

His cabinet portfolios under Premier Gerald Regan included Highways, Public Works, and Tourism.
