Hey guys! Another awesome episode, I do have a couple of questions for DM Rodrigo:

    1. I’m not sure if I read this somewhere or not, but I thought that if you use an encounter or daily power and it misses, it doesn’t actually count as the one-time use of that power. i.e. if you use an encounter power and it misses, you could feel free to use it on your next round because it didn’t actually take any effect.

    2. I was under the impression that you don’t necessarily only have 1 encounter power and 1 daily power prepared only. I was reading it as, for example, if you have a level 1 encounter power and at level 3 gained a second encounter power that you actually have access to both the level 1 and the level 3 encounter powers during the same fight. Also with “daily” powers such as a level 1 daily and a level 2 encounter with the keyword “daily” you would have access to both of those during the same day.

The PHB seems slightly vague about these questions, but the way you are running them seems to limit them a lot. Which does work, and keeps everyone on their toes, but I’m just not sure if that’s the actual rules on them.

Let me know if you can! I’ve been using this ‘cast as a tutorial of sorts because I just started DM’ing my first game a couple of months ago.

Thanks a lot and, again, awesome ‘cast. Everyone in my game loves it!

    EDIT:

    …”such as a level 1 daily and a level 2 UTILITY*…”

Great episode, I just wanted to thank you guys for doing this its usually the highlight of my week. Quick question for really anyone with the experience. I recently picked up fantasy craft, and have been loving it. The makers of spycraft put it together and its tools for world building and magic are just awesome. I was wondering if anyone of the torqletones have taken a look at it and what they thought.

  • Ricco:

Anyone else can’t wait for Matthew to finaly make Rodrigo snap and eat 3d6 of referance damage?

  • @Sendel:

I think there’s some confusion because of Orem’s situation. Usually a level 3 character will have two encounter powers (at levels 1 & 3) one daily power (lv. 1) and one utility power (lv. 2), which could be daily, encounter or at will. Wizards like Orem get the same amount of USES as everyone else, but they have more powers to choose from. Any time a wizard levels up to a daily power he chooses two, and each day PREPARES one. The same goes for utility powers. So although Orem has two more spells than anyone he still has the same number of powers during an encounter.

Also, when you use an encounter or daily power (including utility powers with those keywords) the power is expended regardless of whether it hit or not. Some powers, most frequently fighter dailies, have the ‘Reliable’ keyword, which means they are not expended on a miss, otherwise all other non-at will powers are spent on a miss.

    Does that help?

    • Sendel:

Yes, that helps tremendously! Thanks for the reply to my long-winded post, as well. lol…

I’ve been playing my game as to not expend powers if they miss. I think if I started that now, my players would be incredibly ticked off, but I might just have to. They do seem overpowered when it comes to combat. I have only once rendered one of them unconscious.

Thanks again, Rodrigo. Much appreciated. =)

      • I’d recommend that you do implement it, there are a lot of powers that are balanced by being reliable. Also a lot of powers that deal damage or have other effects on a miss, again, to balance the fact that it’s a big expenditure. Lastly remember that the whole point of action points is to counterbalance the expenditure of daily powers.
