CHEEZY HORROR TRAILERS VOL. 2 (DVD Review)

Ever since the spot-on mock trailers in Rodriguez and Tarantino’s GRINDHOUSE, companies have been cashing in, releasing collections of whatever forgotten theatrical trailers they can get their hands on.First off, I highly doubt that anyone out there is going to buy anything from a company called Cheezy Flicks.  I doubt even more that anyone would even pick up a DVD titled CHEEZY HORROR, and if you...

OF WOLF AND MAN (Book Review)

I have to say, I love Werewolves. More so than vampires, more so than zombies, these shape-shifting, femur gnawing, jugular slashing, hounds of hell (for me) stand far above the slew of other mainstream monster menace. Regrettably however, these carnivorous canines, by comparison, seem to be miserably underrepresented in popular cinema. Only two, maybe three, genuinely great werewolf movies come t...

PENANCE (DVD Review)

Horror is so huge right now that I feel as if I can safely say that nearly 5-10 of the best boxing movies each weekend are of the horror/thriller/sci-fi genre. SAW II boxed 90 million not to mention the recent success of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY at 104 million.  Of course there are different types of horror: the most popular right now being Vampire (TWILIGHT, TRUE BLOOD, VAMPIRE DIARIES, and the soon t...

INFECTED: A NOVEL (Book Review)

Many years ago when I was just a young horror fan, my grandmother used to warn me not to scratch my skin if I had something that itched. “If you do, it will only get worse,” she used to say, “and I know somebody who died from scratching like that.” My grandmother knew someone who died from everything, but that’s another story for another time.

BARON BLOOD (DVD Review)

Another trip down memory lane from the good folks at CHEEZY FLICKS.Legendary director Mario Bava's 1972 gothic chiller about a 300-year-old sadist is not as scary as BLACK SUNDAY or as graphic as TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE.  Instead, Bava’s BARON BLOOD relies on rich colors and spooky castle sets to grab the viewer's attention. (That, and also placing heroine Elke Sommer in mini-skirts whenever pos...

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (DVD Review)

Maybe if I hadn’t seen THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT a decade ago, then PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (out this week on DVD & Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment - read our theatrical review here) wouldn’t have seemed so borrowed and felt more like a much-needed breath of fresh air in the supernatural and horror genres. But I have seen BLAIR WITCH—and the inferior ripoffs that followed—and it’s hard not...

JENNIFER'S BODY (DVD Review)

When JENNIFER’S BODY was released to theaters, I distinctly remember the movie being upstaged by Megan Fox and Diablo Cody. Media conversation seemed to waver between championing them for being brunettes with tattoos, or furiously deriding them for being an attractive young actress and Oscar-winning screenwriter respectively. Despite Megan Fox’s status as a genuine movie star according to those ma...

SHE FREAK (DVD Review)

It’s not often that I’ll sit down and watch much retro horror, and SHE FREAK is a prime example of why I avoid it. The back of the DVD case proclaims the movie to be “a barbarous experience,” and it’s not lying. Every one of the movie’s 82 minutes is practically excruciating.  Claire Brennan stars as Jade Cochran, the main character and titular SHE FREAK. Tired of her uninspiring dead-end job as a...

THIS AIN’T GHOST HUNTERS (NSFW XXX DVD Review)

I’ll just come right out and say it: parody porn may be one of my favorite guilty pleasures. From BIKINI ROYALE to SEX TREK: THE NEXT PENETRATION, there are plenty of laughs to be had. It’s not even always about the sex itself, but in the various ways and various success the filmmakers achieve in turning a popular property INTO a sex film. If you haven’t heard Tony Tedeschi’s Barney Rubble imperso...

PARANORMAL STATE: SEASON 3 (DVD Review)

After experiencing a haunting as a child, Ryan Buell founded the Paranormal Research Society (PRS), a team of investigators who travel across the country trying to help families cope with the supernatural.Yes, I believe in ghosts.  No, I don’t believe in psychics, mediums, ghost whisperers, etc.  But instead of using this review to debate the existence of life after death, I’m going to answer two ...

DISTRICT 9 (DVD Review)

South Africa is the star of DISTRICT 9 (now out on DVD & Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment). Johannesburg, South Africa to be specific. That’s where the film’s co-writer-director Neill Blomkamp was born, and by using that city and country’s turbulent political, social and racial history as the backdrop for his allegorical story, the first-time feature-length helmer enhances this SF...

CURSE OF THE FACELESS MAN (DVD Review)

This week I took a look at CURSE OF THE FACELESS MAN on DVD. Cheers to Oregon-based CHEEZY FLICKS for finally giving this low budget gem from 1958 a proper DVD release. Directed by the inimitable Edward L. Cahn, (IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE) the film essentially tweaks the plot of the old UNIVERSAL MUMMY flicks, just switching the action to Italy. (California, really).
