Joe McElderry, 'The Climb'

'X Factor' winner beats Rage Against the Machine in second UK chart battle

Tuesday, 29 December 2009

A week after losing out to Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" as the UK's top Christmas single, Joe McElderry, winner of the UK TV show The X Factor, earned the New Year's number one single with "The Climb." As of December 27, his song had outsold "Killing in the Name" by 130,000 copies over the course of the week, according to the Official Charts Company.

Walsh's verdict on... Joe McElderry: Joe's going to win. He started off like a little West End star, a bit Gareth Gates. But his vocal has got incredibly good. Day by day, we're watching him grow and like Simon said, he's turned into a man in the last week. His Elton John performances stole the show. Everyone in the house would vote for Joe, from mammy and daddy to the kids. And because he's from the North he'll get a massive northern vote. He's also an incredibly nice guy. He's the one I know most of the four and he doesn't even think he's that good. He's not in it to be famous, he just loves singing. In the studio he'd record incredibly well. He's the one to beat. In fact, he's gonna walk it.
