Traffic forecast for Sept. 17, 2009

All city parking rules are in effect today and tomorrow.

Jews all over the tristate begin the exodus out of town early Friday afternoon to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, which begins Friday at sundown. With many heading to Westchester, Long Island or north Jersey or staying local in Borough Park and Crown Heights, Brooklyn; the upper West Side; Riverdale, the Bronx, and other areas, most major roads and crossings will fill up after 1p.m. These include the Verrazano, George Washington, Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges, the Long Island and Brooklyn-Queens expressways, the Battery Tunnel, etc. Please be cautious around synagogues throughout the city and consider taking mass transit. The Long Island Rail Road is running extra trains Friday afternoon.

Special alert for the RFK (Triborough) Bridge's Harlem River lift span Thursday. To allow marine traffic to pass through underneath, the span in and out of Manhattan will be closed briefly at 10 a.m. and again at 2p.m. The Major Deegan Expressway and the FDR Drive will be affected with some residual delays.

Some parking spots will be filled with people instead of cars Friday for Parking Day, in which various spots throughout the boroughs are converted into public spaces for all to enjoy. For a list of the public spaces, visit parkingdaynyc.org/spots.

The Mets have a 7 p.m. game Friday, making the holiday rush to Long Island even rougher along the Long Island Expressway. Consider the 7 train or the LIRR to Citi Field.

Broad St. between Water and South Sts. will be closed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday for a festival.

The curtain comes down on Fashion Week in Bryant Park on Thursday with the final shows from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. along Sixth Ave. from 42nd to 40th Sts.

FROM THE MAILBAG:

Dear Gridlock Sam,

Is it true that on Metro-North from Connecticut, you'll be able to get to Secaucus, N.J., directly? How is this possible? I thought the train has to come through Grand Central.Jets Fan, New Haven

Dear Jets Fan,

There's a first time for everything, and Sunday marks the first time that a Metro-North train crew will come into Penn Station. Here's the scoop: Three trains on the New Haven Line will travel straight to Secaucus through Penn Station for all 1 p.m. Jets and Giants games, departing from New Haven at 8:05 a.m., 9:05 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. and postgame from Secaucus at 4:28 p.m., 5:28 p.m. and 6:28 p.m. At New Rochelle, the westbound Metro-North train will divert onto tracks operated by Amtrak, leading into Penn Station before proceeding to Secaucus. Here, fans can transfer to a Meadowlands-bound train for the 10-minute ride right to the stadium's front door. Therefore, these direct trains will not stop at Grand Central Terminal.
