Installation
- How do I install NBC Direct?
- To install the NBC Direct, visit http://www.nbc.com/direct and click the "Install NBC Direct" button in the Download Video tab. You will be prompted to install the latest version of the service. The installation wizard will then guide you through the installation steps. Note: this will remove any previously installed versions of the player as well as any videos that were downloaded using the service as they'll no longer be compatible with the latest version of NBC Direct.
- What happens during player installation?
- During installation, your system will be checked for required software components such as Adobe Flash and previously installed NBC Direct. It will also check your device to ensure it meets the minimum computer requirements before proceeding. You then have the option to register your player and receive High Definition resolution videos. Finally, the installer will copy the application files and register them with your Windows operating system.
- I'm having trouble installing NBC Direct. Why?
You must have Administrator Rights on your personal computer in order to install NBC Direct. If not, please contact your System Administrator to grant you the appropriate credentials.
All browser windows must be closed before the NBC Direct installation process can begin. Please close all open browser windows and run the installer again. It is also recommended that you close all open applications before proceeding.

Please press the CTRL+ALT+DEL buttons at the same time to activate the Windows Security options, select the Task Manager, and click on the "Processes" tab. Connection
- Will NBC Direct work inside my corporate network?
- NBC Direct is currently in beta release so depending on your company's networking policies, the service may or may not work. For advanced users, options to manually enter proxy settings can be found within the Preferences section of the player. Please contact your System Administrator for assistance configuring these settings.
- What is P2P?
- NBC Direct utilizes Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology as a means to rapidly deliver media files over the public Internet allowing users to share high quality NBC content directly from their personal computers. When you download an episode through the NBC Direct service, you're doing it on a secure, private and efficient network made up of fellow NBC Direct users. As more and more users join the network, downloads will become even faster. Of course, you have the option to choose not to be part of the NBC Direct private P2P network. However, by opting out, you will only receive standard quality versions of the content and may experience longer download times for each show that you request. For more information about P2P, please visit http://www.pandonetworks.com/faq.
- Will my machine still peer even if the NBC Direct player is not open?
- Yes. If you have chosen to receive High Quality Video, any content you have downloaded will be shared in the private P2P network even if the NBC Direct player is not open.
- What if the video doesn't download properly?
-
If a download is stalled, try clicking "Pause" and then "Resume" in the Download Manager. That is usually enough to get the download going again.
If the download does not resume, please restart your computer and launch the player again.
If a problem arises with any download, the file transfer may have failed or the video may be corrupt and unwatchable. In these cases, delete the file from your "My Library" list and re-download it. - What happens if I turn off my player or computer while downloading a video?
- The Download Manager component of the NBC Direct service uses a process that continues to download videos even if you close the player. This process will not run when your computer is turned off. However, once you restart your computer, any downloads in progress will resume.
- Can I choose not to use P2P?
- Yes, there are a couple ways to do this. You can choose not to register during installation. By skipping registration, you will only receive standard quality videos and will not be joined in as part of the NBC Direct private P2P network. If, however, you registered during or after installation, you would have been automatically enrolled to be part of the NBC Direct private P2P network. To change this setting and opt out of P2P, simply go to the Preferences section of the player and change your Video Quality option from "High Quality Video" to "Standard Quality Video."
- Can I download videos via a dial-up connection?
- We do not recommend the use of NBC Direct via dial-up modem connections because they are too slow. Thus, the use of a broadband Internet connection is required. Please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to upgrade to a high-speed connection such as DSL or cable modem.
- The player appears to hang on the loading screen and doesn't fully launch. Why?
- This occurs when one of NBC Direct's core components fails to load. To fix this, first try refreshing the browser. If that doesn't work, please restart your computer and launch NBC Direct again. If the problem persists, please try the following:
- Close all active web browser windows.
- In your Control Panel window, double click "Pando Media Booster" to open the control panel.
- Click "Shut Down" to temporarily stop the service. You will be asked to confirm the request. Click "Yes."
- Back in your Control Panel window, double click "Pando Media Booster" once again to restart the service.
- Wait a few seconds, then double click "Pando Media Booster" again to open the Pando Media Booster control panel. If it reopens, then Pando Media Booster has been successfully restarted. If it doesn't reopen, repeat steps 3 - 5.
- Once it's confirmed that Pando Media Booster has been restarted, relaunch NBC Direct.
- The player gives me a "zone" error while attempting to download an episode. What does this mean?
- This occurs when one of NBC Direct's core components fails to make the proper web connections. To fix this, first try refreshing the browser. If that doesn't work, please restart your computer and launch NBC Direct again. If the problem persists, please try the following:
- Close all active web browser windows.
- In your Control Panel window, double click "Pando Media Booster" to open the control panel.
- Click "Advanced Connection Settings" to access the Advanced connection options.
- Click "Test my connection" to run the Connectivity Test. This will check the ports needed to run NBC Direct.
- Confirm that tests for both port 80 and port 443 are passed accordingly. If not, there may be issues with your network connection. Please contact your System Administrator for the appropriate network settings before attempting to run NBC Direct again. If the tests are successful, close the Advanced Connection Settings window and close the Pando Media Booster control panel.
- Relaunch NBC Direct.
- I received a message that I do not have enough disk space but my hard drive has a sufficient amount of free space available. Why?
- The message you are seeing is referring to the amount the player is allowed to save on your hard drive. You can increase the allocation by opening the Preferences panel in the player and setting the "MAX STORAGE" option to a higher amount. Please ensure that you have the appropriate, free hard drive space available in order to download your videos.
- Does my bandwidth get affected by NBC Direct?
- NBC Direct's private P2P network is set up to correctly balance the amount of bandwidth used for downloading and uploading content. However, since Internet connections often fluctuate (esp. during peak hours), your performance may vary. If you're experiencing slowness, try changing your "Limit Upload" setting in the Preferences panel to a lower bitrate.
How to use the player
- How can I find the video I want to download?
- Once installed, double-click the NBC Direct icon on your desktop. This will launch the service in a new web browser window where all available content for download will be listed under the "Browse Available Programs" section of the player.
- I've found what I want, now how do I download it?
- In the NBC Direct player, click the "Download" button next to the episode you'd like to watch and your video request will automatically be queued. Within moments, the process should initiate and your download will begin. Once the download has started, the Download Manager will appear at the bottom of the player so you can monitor the progress of your file transfers. When enough of the video has been downloaded, you will receive a notification that the episode is ready for viewing. Note: download times will vary depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
- How do I find my downloads?
- Your downloads can be found under the "My Library" section of the player. Click "Play" to watch your show or "Episode Info" to get more details about the program.
- Can I watch the videos I've downloaded without an Internet connection?
- Yes! This is one of the best features of NBC Direct. Any fully downloaded episode is available for viewing without an Internet connection. Double-click the NBC Direct icon on your desktop and the service will launch in a stand-alone browser window listing all episodes stored on your local hard drive that are available for offline playback. Note: certain player features that require you to be online will not be available.
- How do I get High Quality content?
- Check your selection from within the "Preferences" section of the player. If "High Quality Video" is selected, you are already set to receive High Quality content. If "Standard Quality Video" is selected, you will need to click on the "High Quality Video" option and will then be required to log in with a myNBC account to save these settings. If you do not have a myNBC account, you can create one by selecting the "Sign up" option. Once your account is created, return to the "Preferences" section of the player and log in accordingly.
- Are all the shows available as High Quality downloads?
- At this time, only selected primetime and late night shows are available for download in High Quality resolution.
- What is the Download Manager?
- The Download Manager provides a quick view of the file transfer queue and automatically appears when you start a download. It displays how much of the file transfer has completed or if an error has occurred. You can access it at any time as long as there are active downloads in progress.
- How do Subscriptions work?
- You can subscribe to your favorite NBC show by going to the "My Subscriptions" section of the player. From there, you can view the list of available subscriptions and click on the "Subscribe" button, which will download the latest episode of the show. Any future episodes of your selected program will automatically be downloaded and added to your Library.
- How do I unsubscribe from a series?
- You can cancel a subscription at any time by going to the "My Subscriptions" section of the player and clicking the "Unsubscribe" button. Your settings will be updated accordingly and you will no longer automatically receive future episodes of the series.
- Can I specify where my files can be downloaded?
- Yes, however, this designation can only be made during installation of NBC Direct.
- Can I prioritize my downloads?
- In the Download Manager, if you have more than three active downloads, you can prioritize them by pausing an active download and resuming one from the queue.
- I'm playing the video but it doesn't appear to be a High Quality download. Why?
-
You may be viewing the streaming version of the video instead of playing the download. To ensure you're watching a download, start playback of the video from your "My Library" list of shows.
Preferences may be set to download "Standard Quality Video." Please go to the Preferences section of the player and check that you have the "High Quality Video" option selected. If not, you will need to click on the "High Quality Video" option and will then be required to log in with a myNBC account to save these settings. If you do not have a myNBC account, you can create one by selecting the "Sign up" option. Once your account is created, return to the "Preferences" section of the player and log in accordingly. - How many videos can I download at a time?
- You can request as many videos as you like but only three downloads can be active at the same time. If you do request more than three downloads, additional videos will be queued and automatically begin downloading as the others are completed.
Digital Rights Management (DRM)
- What is DRM?
- (from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management) Digital rights management (DRM) is a term that refers to access control technologies used by hardware manufacturers, publishers and copyright holders to limit usage of digital media or devices. Whereas copy protection only attempts to prohibit unauthorized copies of media or files, digital rights management allows the issuer of the media or file to control in detail what can and cannot be done with a single instance. For example, an issuer can limit the number of viewings, number of copies, which devices the media can be transferred to etc. Digital rights management often depends on cryptography and on-line activation.
- What are the license terms of my download?
- Videos can be downloaded and viewed up to a predefined expiration date from the time they are made available. The timeframe varies from show to show, so please check the expiration date listed next to your downloaded videos or the available programs list.
- Can I play downloaded videos on any computer?
- NBC Direct videos will only play on the computer where the download request originated.
- Can I back up videos to external drives, CDs, or DVDs?
- Unfortunately, not at this time. The video license you receive will be solely for the machine the file was originally downloaded to.
- Can I get NBC Direct outside of the United States?*
- At this time, NBC Direct is only available within the United States. If you attempt to connect to the service outside the United States, you will not be able to download any new videos but you can download while in the U.S. and view it outside the U.S. until the license has expired.
Logging in to myNBC
- Can I use the same user account on different machines?
- Yes, you can install NBC Direct on different machines and register each player under the same user account.
- Can I install NBC Direct multiple times on the same machine but under different Windows user profiles/accounts?
- Yes, however, all users installing the service must have Administrator Rights on the machine they are attempting to load NBC Direct onto. Please note, this may cause your available hard drive space to be used up faster due to multiple files for multiple accounts being downloaded to the same personal computer.
- Do I have to use the same login for NBC Direct?
- No, you can choose to use an existing myNBC account or create a different one for NBC Direct. However, it is suggested that you use one account as future releases of NBC Direct will provide more enhanced file management through the myNBC social network.
- I forgot my password, what do I do?
- Visit http://my.nbc.com/accounts/forgotpassword to have a new password sent to your email address.
Other
- What if my video playback is jerky?
- Check to see if your computer meets the recommended system requirements. If it does, you may have too many applications running at the same time. Close other applications and try viewing the video again. If the problem persists, you may have other services running that are keeping NBC Direct from reaching peak performance. Check that you don't have an anti-virus scanning processes running or that any other monitoring software (e.g. anti-spyware program) is active. Finally, for the best results, please allow all active downloads to complete before attempting to view the programs in your My Library list. Alternatively, if your download preference is configured to receive High Quality Video, you can set it to receive Standard Quality Video which will require less resources from your computer for video playback.
- How often are shows updated and when do they become available?
- Typically, all primetime shows are scheduled to go live at 2am Pacific / 5am Eastern the morning after broadcast. Late night shows are normally posted for viewing online by 9am Pacific / Noon Eastern. However, show times and dates vary and the availability of new programs depends on the broadcast schedule.
- How can I avoid computer viruses on my downloaded video files?
-
If you use file sharing programs to download media files that do not deliver a license, your computer may download a virus. However, you will not have this problem when you obtain protected files from legitimate online sources such as NBC Direct.
To guard against such attacks, we suggest that you use Microsoft Windows Update to keep your computer current with all security patches for Windows operating systems. You should also install anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. They help to protect your computer and keep your system running well.\ - I have a question about NBC Direct that's not answered here. Who can I contact?
- Please send an email to nbcdirect@nbcuni.com. NBC Direct is currently in beta release so your feedback is appreciated. Note: due to the volume of email we receive, we cannot guarantee a reply to your inquiry.
Known Issues
- Video playback is not smooth.
- The video playback framerate can suffer when attempting to view an episode while you have downloads in progress. If your video playback is very choppy, we recommend you allow all downloads to complete before attempting to view your video.
- Playback of a partially transferred video stops during download.
- This issue tends to occur if you attempt to watch a video clip that's available for playback but not completely downloaded. Simply click on the play button to continue the video or allow the video to download completely before starting playback.
- In Windows Vista, installing the service creates a generic NBC Direct desktop icon that, when double-clicked, cannot find the application.
- Note: correcting this issue requires use of the Windows Task Manager. If you're not comfortable with this, do not attempt this procedure. Open task manager, stop the ieuser.exe process, uninstall NBC Direct, and try installing one more time.
- When emptying the trash in My Library, it gets stuck on the message "Deleting episodes... please wait"
- We're working on a permanent fix to address this. In the meantime, simply closing and reopening the browser should remove the item from the trash.
- Downloads don't advance beyond 0% or seems to stall after only a partial download has taken place.
- We have identified that some Anti-Virus and Firewall programs may not handling the amount of simultaneous connections needed or may be blocking the NBC Direct application altogether. Please configure your Anti-Virus and/or Firewall adding NBC Direct to the exceptions or "safe" applications list.

Troubleshooting
- When I'm streaming video, why does the audio or video playback stop and/or stall?
- Under normal circumstances, playback should not stop or stall. However, video delivery may be disrupted during periods of heavy traffic on the site and/or if your Internet connection is too slow or compromised in some way. Additionally, having too many computer applications open and running at the same time on your PC can affect video playback.
- I'm still having problems. What more can I do if the video playback stops or plays slowly?
-
Refreshing your browser or closing your browser and opening it again can often clear up stalled playback. Another possible solution is to drag the button back in time several minutes in the program timeline to give the downloading video a chance to catch up.
You may also wish to avoid site congestion and wait approximately 30 minutes before viewing the programming again. Or, try closing other computer applications that may be open at the same time. FYI: Peak periods of traffic congestion occur during lunch hours and in the early evening. - Why doesn't audio and video play at all?
- While generally fast to load, video can take 30-50 seconds to display. If video does not appear at all, you may be running a content filter, antivirus application or proxy accelerator that is preventing the streaming of video content. Please turn off these services and try again. If the problem persists, please contact us via our Technical Support Feedback Form.
- I'm hearing audio but the video is not appearing. Why?
- Your computer may not meet the minimum system and bandwidth requirements for the player. Please refer to the chart above to see if your system meets the minimum requirements.
- Why does video play without audio?
- Please ensure that your speakers or headphones are connected, turned on and not muted. If the problem persists, please contact us via our Technical Support Feedback Form.
- I've tried everything, and the player still won't work for me.
- If you continue to experience stalling problems after ensuring that you meet the minimum system and bandwidth requirements and trying all the above troubleshooting steps, please contact us via our Technical Support Feedback Form.

- I'm having all sorts of trouble and this didn't answer my questions. Where do I go for answers?
The Basics
- I have never done this before. Where do I start?
- Well, first off welcome! We're glad you're here. In order to use our mobile content, your cell phone must have text and Internet capabilities. Not only does your phone need to be capable of text messaging and surfing the Internet, but also you must be signed up with your service provider to use those services. If you're not sure, check your phone's user guide or ask your service provider.
- Why does my phone need to be text- and Internet-enabled?
- NBC mobile content is delivered through text message. For simple text alerts about your favorite shoes, you'll get a message delivered to your phone. For more interactive offerings, the text message will contain a link to an Internet address where can download additional content to your phone. You will not be able to receive text alerts, surf the mobile web or download mobile content without these capabilities.
- How do I get to the NBC.com mobile website?
-
In order to go to our mobile website, you need to have a phone that can access the Internet. On most phones, you can access the internet browser from your phone's menu and then enter in the url "m.nbc.com."
Try adding "m.nbc.com" to your bookmarks to save time.
- Does going to your mobile website cost money?
- There is no charge from NBC to visit our mobile site. However, the normal data rates from your provider will still apply. Check with your carrier to find out what your current plan is or what data plans in general are available.
- Is my wireless carrier one that you support?
- NBC.com mobile currently supports Alltel, AT&T (formally Cingular Wireless), Sprint/Nextel/Boost, T-Mobile®, Virgin Mobile, US Cellular "Dobson" and Verizon Wireless.
- How can I find out what my phone model is?
- The easiest way is to turn your wireless phone off, remove its battery cover and read the label (it may be under the battery). Your wireless phone model number should be listed on that label. If it's not there, or you can't remove the battery, contact your phone provider.
- Which phones can download NBC ringtones, wallpapers, games or watch NBC videos?
- The list of phones capable of doing this is far too long to list here! (Remember when no one had a cell phone? Oh, how far we've come.) Check your user guide or visit your carrier's website for full details on your phone's capabilities. Depending on the model, it may be able to do all, some, or none of the things we offer.
- Are these services available in other countries?
- Currently NBC mobile content is only available in the U.S.
- I have a prepaid phone. Can I subscribe to the service?
- Some carriers do not allow prepaid subscribers to subscribe to premium text services. Some do. Check with your carrier before signing up.
- How do I download an NBC Mobile game?
- After you choose the game you want, a text message will be sent to your phone. Open the message and follow the instructions in the message to download the content. Downloading may take a few minutes. Once the download is complete, click "save." A confirmation will be sent to your phone when downloading is complete.
- Where do I find the NBC content on my phone after downloading it?
- Each phone stores content differently. Most phones will store the download in your "Games" folder. Sometimes the content is in the "Applications" or "User Downloads" folder. You can get to these folders using the main menu on your phone. You can also check your phone's user guide or visit your carrier's website for more specific information.
- In addition to the cost of the content, does it cost money or airtime to download?
- Most wireless carriers charge in increments of kilobytes (KB) for data usage, not minutes. This means that you are only charged for the data you send or receive through the network. See your operator's terms and conditions for how data sessions are billed on your plan. Downloading content is data heavy, so if your provider bills per KB, you might want to see if your wireless provider offers an unlimited data plan. You can also use the website to browse, preview and send content to your phone directly to save phone data usage.
Text Messaging
- How do I send a text message?
- All phones have different menu options and buttons. Consult your user manual for specific instructions for your phone. Generally, however, by going to the "Message" option and selecting "New Message," your phone will open a new text message. In the message area use the keypad to type in the keyword associated with the mobile service you would like to use. Depending on your phone's keyboard, you may have to press the numeric key more than once to display the letter you need. In the area where it asks for the phone number, type in the 5-6 digit short code and press "Send/Select."
- Will I be charged for text messages?
- Standard text messaging rates will apply to any text message received or sent, unless otherwise indicated. For T-mobile users, other charges may apply. Your phone plan may already have an amount of included text messages built in as part of your monthly service charge. If you are not sure what your messaging plan is, ask your provider.
- What is a short code?
- Short codes are to text messaging what phone numbers are phone calls. Basically, a short code is 5-6 digit number that is like a phone number, only for text messaging. For example, to get daily updates on NBC Late Night guests, you would text the keyword "UpLate" to the short code 62288 to join. The short code is how you contact us via text message.
- What is a keyword?
- A keyword is the word you send in your text message that identifies the service you want to use. For example, to get daily updates on NBC Late Night guests, you would text the keyword "UpLate" to the short code 62288 to join.
- What happens after I have sent the keyword to the short code?
- After you have successfully sent the keyword to the short code, you will receive a message back confirming your signup. It usually takes less than a minute. However, sometimes there are delays with the network and it can take several hours to receive the confirmation.
- What if I do not receive a confirmation message?
-
If you are sure you sent the correct keyword, try waiting a few more hours. Network congestion and bandwidth will sometimes slow the sending/receiving of text messages. Also, it could be your cell phone carrier is not one that participates in our mobile programs.
For further assistance regarding text messaging errors, please contact support@gosinglepoint.com or call the customer support number at 1-866-375-2127.
For all other NBC Mobile issues, please email MobileSupport@nbcuni.com - Do the text messages you send me count against my monthly messaging allotment?
- Yes, standard messaging rates apply.
- How do I pay for my premium text message service?
- The charges will be added directly to your mobile phone bill. Additional carrier fees may apply, depending on your agreement with your carrier. Check with your wireless provider for more details in order to avoid unexpected charges.
Troubleshooting
- My phone is not compatible with your service. What can I do?
- Unfortunately, the only think you can do is visit your local wireless store and purchase a phone that is compatible with our service.
- I can't get anything to download. What's wrong?
- Check to make sure your phone's Internet and text message services are working or try again later. If you know everything is in order with your phone, it may be due to traffic congestion on the servers.
- I get an error when I type the URL address? What do I do?
- Make certain you type it exactly as shown and try again; also make sure your wireless web services are activated and enabled before going to URLs directly.
- I sent a text message and got nothing back. What happened?
- Your phone may not be compatible or your data network may not be working. Check to see if you can access your wireless web and text services, then try again.
- Why hasn't my NBC mobile content arrived yet?
- Normally, a message sent to your wireless phone should be delivered within a few minutes, but occasionally system delays may cause it to take longer. If after 30 minutes you still have not received your content, please verify that your phone is able to download content and your carrier's data network is working. Then check to see if you can access your wireless web and text services. If everything's in working order, wait awhile and try again.
- My content link arrived, but I can't access it on the Internet. Help!
- First thing, make sure your phone has access to the Internet through your wireless provider. If it doesn't, contact your provider to sign up for a data plan. If you already have a data plan, your wireless data network may be temporarily unavailable for whatever reason (out of range, roaming, etc.). You should wait until service is available and try again. If you still can't connect, try restarting your phone before attempting to access the link.
- I got the text message, but did not get the content link. What do I do?
- Your phone may not be compatible with this service. Check to see if you can download any content by using another service. Or, contact your service provider for more information.
- My NBC mobile game arrived but when I attempt to download I receive an error message. What is happening?
- Your cell phone might not be compatible with games or an Internet connection may not be available through your wireless carrier. If the content is not downloaded and/or is not compatible with your phone, you will not be charged.
- I get an error while downloading. What do I do?
- Try to download the content again and let it finish. If the problem persists, check your user guide or contact your service provider.
- Will I be charged for downloads that are not completed?
- No! You will only be billed for games that have successfully downloaded to your phone.
- I did everything correctly and it did not work. What now?
- Verify that your phone is able to download content and your carrier's data network is working, then check to see if you can access your wireless web and text services.
- How do I delete NBC content from my phone?
- Every model of phone is unique (like a snowflake)! You should refer to your user manual for details on deleting ringtones, images or other content from your cell phone.
- How do I cancel my NBC mobile subscription?
- You can cancel messages at any time by sending a text message with the opt-out keyword in the message body to the short code for that service. You will find the opt-out keyword in your initial confirmation. Also, you can send "STOP" to the short code at any time to cancel the service. For example, to unsubscribe to daily NBC Late Night updates you would text the keyword "LATESTOP" to short code 62288. You will get a message back asking to confirm that you want to unsubscribe from the service.
- I'm having all sorts of trouble and this didn't answer my questions. What do I do?
- For further assistance, email MobileSupport@nbcuni.com

Please refrain from posting or uploading any content that contains the following:

- slanderous remarks about others, including talent and/or other users

- How do I create an account?
- Go to the homepage of any NBC community and click "sign up" to register. You'll be asked for some basic information and asked to verify your email address. Once your email has been confirmed, you can customize your profile by adding photos, modules and other information about yourself.
- If I want to be a member of several NBC Communities, do I have to make multiple accounts?
- No! We've built our application to allow you to use your NBC login across all of our different sites. We would suggest starting by signing up and creating a profile on our main community site myNBC as your primary account. Go to my.nbc.com to sign up for a myNBC account.
- I'm 12 years old... can I join an NBC community?
-
Unfortunately, NBC Communities require all users to be 13 years or older in accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
NBC takes kids' safety seriously. To read more about COPPA, click here.
- When I sign up for an NBC community, how do I verify my email address?
-
Once you sign up, a message containing a confirmation link will be sent to the email address you gave us during registration. When you receive this message, click on the link and your email address will be automatically verified and you can login.
If you don't see the email verification in your inbox, check your spam/junk folder. Sometimes the little electronic postman gets confused and accidentally delivers our emails there. If this happens, be sure to add us to your "Safe Senders" list.
- What if I have an account but can't log into it?
-
The email address you provided during registration and confirmed is your login ID. You must log in using your email address. Also, please remember that your password is case sensitive. If you've forgotten your password, click the "Forgot Password" link on the login page.
If you're sure you've got the correct login details and are still experiencing trouble, click "Help" and a member of our tech support team will contact you shortly.
- What if I forget my password?
- If you forgot your password, click "Forgot Password" on the login screen and enter your email address. Your password will be reset and a new one will be emailed to you at the address you provided during registration.
- What if I forget my username?
- No worries. You no longer need your username to log in. Once you log in using your email address, click "Account Settings" to find and/or change your current username.
- What if I forget my email address?
- Click the "Forgot Email" link on the login page and enter your username and password. If correct, the page will display the email you provided during registration. Use this email and your password to log in.

- Click "Account Settings" to change your email address. A new email verification request will be sent to your email. You must complete this verification before using your new address to log in.
- How do I change my password?
- Click "Account Settings" to change your password. You must confirm your existing password, then enter a new password and re-type the new password to confirm. Once you save your account settings, you must log in using your new password.
- My email address is already being used, even though I haven't registered on this site before. What can I do?
- Oof, with all this new web 2.0 stuff, there are a lot of passwords and logins to remember. Perhaps you registered in the past and have simply forgotten? Maybe you registered for another NBC community? It's ok. We totally understand. Click "Forgot Password" to have your password reset and sent to your email. Once the new password arrives, try logging in with your email address/password to view your account.
- How do I change my personal information?
-
You can edit your personal information by click "Account Settings" and updating the information stored there. If you edit your account settings on any NBC site, the changes will be reflected to your account.
However, your profiles are a different story. One of the neat things about NBC Communities is that you have unique profile pages for every community you join. If you edit your myNBC profile, those changes won't affect your Dunder Mifflin Infinity profile, so you'll need to edit each one independently. If you'd like to edit your profile, click "Edit" in the "myPROFILE" section of the navigation to update your modules and profile information.
- How do I delete my account?
- We're working to improve the flexibility of the site to give you more control over your account. In the meantime, please click the "Feedback" link to contact us.

User Behavior and Moderation
- How do I report a user who's being inappropriate?
- We want everyone to feel welcome on NBC Communities. If another user is making you feel uncomfortable, you can report them by clicking the "Flag this member" link under the user's avatar on his/her profile page. Clicking this link will send a note to our administrators who will investigate the user and take the appropriate action if necessary.
- Where can I read the general rules of the message board?
- We're so glad you asked! In most forums, a rules thread is always pinned at the top. It's a good idea to check these posts before you engage a specific forum, just so you know you don't make a rookie mistake. To read up on the general etiquette of our forums, click here.
- What do I do if I see inappropriate blog entries, comments or photos?
- You can report any inappropriate blog entries and comments by clicking the "Flag it" link in the particular module. Clicking this link will send a note to our administrators who will investigate the content and take appropriate action if necessary.
- Is there a way to block users from contacting me?
- Sure is. You know what they say more posts, more problems. If someone's giving you trouble, you can block any user by clicking the "Block this member" link under the user's avatar on his/her profile page. You will no longer receive messages or comments from users that have been blocked.
- When is the video I uploaded going to be posted so my contacts can see it?
- All video submissions must be approved by our administrators to prevent the uploading of inappropriate content. You understand. The Internet can be a strange place sometimes. We make every effort to approve submissions as soon as possible, but the volume of requests can sometimes cause delays of several hours. Please be patient and try back again shortly to see if your content has been approved.
- Why did my video get rejected?
- To prevent the uploading of inappropriate content, our administrators must screen all videos. If your video was rejected, it was determined to have been contrary to the Terms of Use for user-submitted video content. Please see the Terms of Service for more information.
- Why did a photo that I uploaded get removed?
- As they do with video, our administrators review photo submissions for inappropriate content and will remove photos as necessary. It is also possible that your photo was flagged as inappropriate by other members, which could have caused its removal.
Video Tips
- Getting Started
-
- First, to make a video, you're going to need a camera. There are several types of cameras that will work for shooting web videos, including webcams, point-and-shoot digital cameras, camera phones and traditional and/or digital video cameras.
- Every camera is different and you should consult your owner's manual for the details on how your particular model works.
- Some phones with cameras only shoot still photographs. Make sure you read the manual or contact your service provider to find out the capabilities of your phone.
- If you own an older camcorder, check to see that it has a digital output. If it does, you'll be able to get a cord that can connect the camera to your computer.
- Shooting the Video
-
- Once you've consulted your camera's manual and figured out how to get it to record video, set up the shot. Make sure you take into consideration the lighting and background.
- For webcams, you're going to be confined to the area around your computer. However, with other cameras you can shoot your video wherever you'd like. Regardless of where you shoot the video, keep in mind that you want good lighting and framing.
- If you're shooting a video indoors, try placing a lamp next to you, just out of the frame, to light your face. Avoid shooting under florescent lights, they will make your beautiful face look drab and pale.
- Plan your shot so that everything you want to be in the frame is in the frame. A tripod will probably help (they sell little ones for webcams and digital cameras), but be sure to check the framing of the shot before you start filming.
- Keep your video to less than 30 seconds. This is important for two reasons: one, uncompressed video files are generally very large and depending on your camera, more than 30 seconds may exceed the digital storage you have, and two, we have a 100 MB upload cap for each video.
- Getting the Video Off Your Camera
-
- Like we said before, every camera is different. However, except for traditional video cameras, they will all save your video as a digital file. Some common file types for video are MPEG (.mpg), QuickTime (.mov), AVI (.avi), Windows Media (.wmv), Flash Video (.flv) and Real Media (.rm). Your video must be in one of those formats in order to be uploaded to NBC.com.
- If your camera records in a format not listed above, try a Google search for a program that will convert your file type to one of the acceptable formats listed above. An example search might be "Convert [enter your file extension here] to AVI."
- For Webcams: Most webcams will save video directly to your hard drive. You can use your webcam's software to designate a save destination for the video file. Remember what file you select so that you can locate it on your hard drive.
- For Point-and-Shoot Digital Cameras: Connect the cable from your camera to your computer. Your computer should recognize the camera and allow you explore the camera's memory. Find the video file and drag it to your desktop.
- For Video Cameras: Connect the cable from the digital output on your camera to your computer. Consult your manual for specific instructions. For digital video cameras, you should be able to explore the camera's memory and drag the file to your desktop from there. For older, traditional video cameras, you may have to get software that will allow you to capture the video (via the cord) on to your desktop.
- For Camera Phones: In general, you should be able to get video off your phone in two ways: by using a cord that connects to your computer or by emailing yourself the video directly from your phone. If you're using a cord, you should be able to explore your phone's memory just like you would with a digital camera. If you're emailing yourself the photo, there may be an option right when you shoot/save the video to email it. You can also try composing a new message and attaching the video by browsing your phone's hard drive.
- Uploading the Video
-
- Once you have the video on your computer's hard drive, uploading is a piece of cake.
- Make sure your video is 100 MB or less by right clicking the file and selecting "Properties."
- You can also check your video's format in the Properties screen. Our accepted formats are MPEG (.mpg), QuickTime (.mov), AVI (.avi), Windows Media (.wmv), Flash Video (.flv) and Real Media (.rm).
- In the video upload screen, click "Browse" to find the video on your hard drive.
- Enter in a title and description and hit "Upload."
- It will probably take a few minutes for your video to upload and then it will be put into a queue to be approved. We like to take a look at all our video content to make sure no one's being naughty. After it's approved, it will be available in your "Live Videos" section.

- You can add featured photos and videos by clicking the "Edit" icon in the top right corner of the desired module on your profile page. On the "Manage Photos/Videos" page, the top box is for featured content, while the lower box displays all of the content uploaded to your profile. To remove featured photos or videos, click the "remove" link below the featured content in your "Manage Photos/Videos" page.
- What are those icons in the upper right corner of some of the modules on my profile? Why don't they all have the icons?
-
Most of the modules on your myNBC profile allow you to edit what's displayed there, like featured photos and videos, blogs, and comments. These modules can also be moved around and arranged on your page to suit your tastes. The icon on the far right (that looks like pen and paper) is the "Edit" button, which allows you to update the content that appears in that module. The icon to its left (that looks like four arrows) is the "Move" icon. You can click the Move button and drag the module anywhere on your profile page.
Modules that do not have these buttons are either not editable (e.g. What's New?) or unmovable (e.g. About Me).
- What's that box below the ad in the right column of my profile? Can I get rid of it?
- That box under the ad is a rotating content module that displays featured NBC content throughout all NBC Universal websites. And no, you cannot remove it.
- What if I want to change the style of my profile?
- You can update the style on your profile page by clicking the "Styles" link in the myPROFILE section of the myNBC menubar at the top of the screen. There are several styles, or templates, based on NBC shows that are available for your page, and you can change them as often as you'd like.
- I changed the style and now there's an extra widget on my profile... how did that happen?
- Every show style comes with a show-related video widget. If you'd like to remove the widget from your profile, just click the "widgets" link in the myMEDIA section of the myNBC menubar at the top of the screen.
- How do I view my profile as other people see it?
- You can view your public profile by clicking the "View Profile" link in the myPROFILE section of the myNBC menubar at the top of the screen. This page displays what your profile page looks like to other members.
Social Networking
- How do I find new people on myNBC?
- You can search for new users by using the search field at the top of the "People" page, or you can perform more advanced people searches on the dedicated "Search" page. Both of these links can be found in the myNBC menubar at the top of the screen. Now go make some new friends!
- How do I add someone to myNetwork if I'm already looking at their profile?
- In the "About Me" section of a user's profile, under his/her avatar, you will find an "Add this member" link. Clicking that link will send a contact request notification to the user, at which point the user you wish to friend will either accept or decline. Once accepted, the user will appear in your network.
- How can I tell if someone wants to add me as a contact?
- Friend request notifications appear in your messages inbox under the "Friend Request" tab. You can access the messages page by clicking the "Messages" link in the myNETWORK section of the myNBC menu bar at the top of the screen. You will also receive a notification under the avatar on your profile page when you receive any new contact requests.
- Is there a way to invite new people to join myNBC?
- Absolutely! Under the avatar on your profile page is a link that reads "Invite New People." Simply fill in your friend's name and email address and an invitation will be sent directly to him/her.
Dunder Mifflin Infinity
The Basics
- What is Dunder Mifflin Infinity?
- Dunder Mifflin Infinity (DMI) is a social network created for the NBC show "The Office." It's based on a website that was featured on air and allows users to become "employees" of Dunder Mifflin. On the site, you can join a branch and complete tasks as part of your "job." These tasks include things like uploading photos and videos, playing mini-games and submitting your favorite recipes. We're betting those sound like more fun than the current tasks your real boss asks you to do.
- How do I apply for a job at DMI?
- Visit the DMI homepage and click the "Apply" button on the right-hand side of the page. This will register you for a DMI account and give you a login good to use on all NBC Communities. - How do you determine the calorie deficit for my weight-loss goal?
-
Creating a calorie deficit in your diet can help you lose fat. A calorie deficit simply means that you burn more than you intake. According to the National Institutes of Health,* it takes a deficit of 3,500 calories to burn a pound of fat. To figure out the calorie deficit for your total weight loss, we take the pounds you want to lose and multiply it by 3,500. For example, if you are 10 pounds from your weight-loss goal, that would equal a 35,000 calorie deficit to burn those 10 pounds of fat. It's impossible to come close to meeting your deficit in a day or even a week, but it will help you determine how many calories you need burn each day to hit your goal in time.
