US telecommunications provider Verizon Wireless will be selling the iPhone 4 and 5 on its networks from January 2011, reports said.
The news has been greeted warmly by Apple fans in the US, who for years have been stuck on AT&T Inc's network for iPhone coverage.
The exclusive iPhone contract with AT&T was set to end in January, Bloomberg news reported Tuesday night, citing unidentified sources in the Verizon camp.
Verizon Wirless is at the forefront of digital communications technology in the United States, currently building it's own 4G wireless network.
Later this year, Verizon was also expected to unveil deals with several other popular smartphone makers to carry their respective devices.
Massive growth in the use of smartphones for high volume data activity, like the downloading of music, videos and applications has put an increased strain on the AT&T network, creating iPhone user dismay.
Steve Jobs' Apple Inc. has sold some 50 million iPhone smartphone devices world wide since 2007, with the 4th generation iPhone released world wide last week.
