Marty Turco and the Dallas Stars said goodbye to their fans until after the Olympics with their best performance in a long time -- and terminated the Phoenix Coyotes' six-game winning streak in the process.

Turco made 34 saves for his 39th career shutout, rookie Jamie Benn had his first two-goal game, and the Stars beat the road-weary Coyotes 4-0 on Saturday night.

The Coyotes started a four-game trip with a 4-2 win at the American Airlines Center on Sunday, won in shootouts at Nashville on Tuesday and Chicago on Friday, but were no match for the revved-up Stars, who don't play at home again until March 2.

NEW YORK -- The poke of the stick into a part of your body that might not respond well to that sort of thing. The hit slightly after the whistle designed to get your attention. The well-timed insult that gets under your skin and causes you to lose your cool.

Everyone knows the game of Rangers irritator Sean Avery -- but that doesn't make it any less irksome if you're in the wrong state of mind.

Just ask Devils star Ilya Kovalchuk.

With his team trailing the Rangers 3-1 and only 2:16 left in the third period, Kovalchuk found himself a couple of feet from Avery during a whistle. A tap of the stick and a few well-chosen words later, Kovalchuk was wailing away on Avery as officials tried to separate the pair.

The NHL's biggest rivalry -- Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin -- plays out again on Sunday with more than just the usual two points and bragging rights on the line.

Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals host Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NBC Game of the Week at noon ET with the Caps' 13-game winning streak on the line. It's the longest streak in the NHL since New Jersey won 13 in a row in 2001 -- and a win by the Capitals would make their streak the longest since Pittsburgh set the League record of 17 consecutive wins in March-April 1993.

The Caps and their fans likely spent Saturday digging out of the blizzard that covered the Mid-Atlantic region and forced the Penguins to scramble their travel plans after Saturday's 5-3 loss in Montreal. The Caps got win No. 13 on Friday with a 5-2 victory over Atlanta.

Just when the New York Rangers thought they saw the last of Ilya Kovalchuk at Madison Square Garden this season, the New Jersey Devils made a blockbuster deal to acquire the superstar from the Atlanta Thrashers.

And guess who's coming to visit again Saturday night.

After his two-point debut with the Devils in a stirring 4-3 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night, Kovalchuk will get his first taste of one of the NHL's best rivalries when he faces the Rangers at MSG (7 p.m., RDS) for the first time while wearing the red and black. In two games at MSG this season, both Atlanta wins, Kovalchuk has a goal, three assists and a shootout goal that helped the Thrashers earn a victory on Dec. 14.

In 12 career games at MSG, Kovalchuk has 5 goals and 7 assists.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Never before has John Tavares been through something like this.

Never before has the Ontario Hockey League's all-time leading scorer found the back of the net only once in a six-week span. But the No. 1 selection from the 2009 Entry Draft finds himself in such a predicament heading into Saturday night's game between his New York Islanders and the Carolina Hurricanes at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

"I've been able to score goals my whole life," said Tavares, who is 17-16-33 in 57 games with the Isles after a spectacular junior career that saw him hit the back of the net 215 times. "It's new. I haven't gone through something like this, but I'm trying to be as upbeat and as positive as I can. For me, I'm just trying to stay positive knowing another game's coming. We've still got 20-something games left. There's lots of time for me to get going again, along with everybody else."

Certainly, Tavares isn't the only player who is struggling. The Islanders enter Saturday's action having lost six consecutive games, all in regulation. But after a tremendous start to the season -- 10 of his goals came before Dec. 1 -- some are puzzled as to what's caused Tavares to have only one tally since Dec. 23.

Saturday figures to be a bonanza for hockey fans. The NHL's 14-game schedule runs from early afternoon until late night, with action from coast to coast to coast.

The day gets under way at 1 p.m. ET in Boston, where the Bruins try to end a nine-game losing streak when they host Vancouver. The B's are looking for their first win at TD Garden in more than a month. The Canucks lost 3-1 on Thursday at Ottawa, the third stop on their record-setting 14-game road trip.

NEWARK, N.J. -- Jamie Langenbrunner pleaded guilty, but also covered his bases by saying anyone else would have probably done the same thing.

Instead of just playing the game and letting the ice open up for chances, both the Devils' captain and Dainius Zubrus admitted they were watching Ilya Kovalchuk a little too much and also trying to feed him the puck when maybe they shouldn't have been.

"That was probably all a little too much passing it around early on instead of just shooting," Langenbrunner said. "We scored the goal by just shooting it at the net and sometimes you have to do a little more of that to open everything else up."

NEWARK, N.J. -- Ilya Kovalchuk couldn't come up with the words to sum up his whirlwind last few days.

"It's not easy," the newest New Jersey Devil said.

Now it doesn't really matter either.

The history books will detail Kovalchuk's final days in Atlanta, how he couldn't reach an agreement on a new contract and eventually was traded from the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2001. They will document his first few hours as a Devil, from the time GM Lou Lamoriello picked him up in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night to the time he took his first shift 46 seconds into Friday night's game.

Kovalchuk, though, cares only about what matters most.

How did his first full day as a Devil end? Well, that he'll never forget.

Generating shots on net was not a problem for the Ilya Kovalchuk-less Atlanta Thrashers, but scoring goals against the Washington Capitals was on this night.

Despite taking 45 shots, including 22 during the second period, the Thrashers lost to the Capitals 5-2 in their first game since trading the face of their franchise.

"I thought we played pretty well," Thrashers forward Colby Armstrong said. "I thought we played them pretty tight and had almost 50 shots on net, but we gave up a 2-on-1 and a 3-on-1 in the third period and they scored on both of them."

Kovalchuk went to New Jersey on Thursday along with defenseman Anssi Salmela for defenseman Johnny Oduya, forward Niclas Bergfors, prospect Patrice Cormier and a 2010 first-round pick. The teams also swapped second-round selections in the 2010 Entry Draft.

It was a spirited effort by Atlanta -- turning aside three of four power-play chances in the first period, including a two-man advantage, and outshooting Washington 22-9 in the second -- but a pair of turnovers early in the third cost the Thrashers dearly.

NEWARK, N.J. -- Ilya Kovalchuk is making his debut for the New Jersey Devils tonight at Prudential Center against the similarly revamped Toronto Maple Leafs. NHL.com is in attendance and will be documenting his night on a period-by-period basis.

FIRST PERIOD

Kovalchuk jumps onto the ice for the first time as a Devil 46 seconds into the game and the crowd gives him a nice ovation. He comes over the boards for an on-the-fly change for Zach Parise and is skating with Dainius Zubrus and Jamie Langenbrunner. The Leafs countered with Christian Hanson, Lee Stempniak and John Mitchell as well as defensemen Luke Schenn and Carl Gunnarsson.

He stays on for 1:14 and plays the puck once, and the crowd reacts again. However, he is bumped off the puck by Gunnarsson at the right-wing half wall.
