CoSIDA Membership Benefits

Membership Benefits
When joining CoSIDA, members get more than a membership card and a thank you. For instance...

WORKSHOPS - CoSIDA sponsors an annual summer workshop which has panels covering all phases of the profession. In addition, there is a full slate of social activities, making it an exciting and important part of the membership activity. The aim of the workshop is to make SIDs more proficient in their jobs by giving them a wide range of technical panels on new techniques in communications, publications and promotions. At the workshop, excellent contacts are made with SIDs from throughout the nation. The workshop was held in Chicago from 1957-71 and since has rotated to areas throughout the country.

COSIDA DIGEST - The CoSIDA Digest is published online 11 times a year (August through June) and runs anywhere from 32-100 pages per issue. In addition to general news about the profession, it contains ideas, opinions, contest information, information on job openings and articles on the top people in the profession. If a member is seeking a new position, or is attempting to hire an assistant, there is a job seeker section which has been helpful to many people.

COSIDA DIRECTORY - One important membership benefit is having the CoSIDA Directory which fully searchable online and an Adobe.pdf version will be available throughout the year with the latest updates so you can have it on your computer to view when you don't have internet access. The publication contains the names, addresses and phone numbers of over 2,500 SIDs and assistants in United States and Canada senior and junior colleges as well as those at conference, bowl, association and organization offices.

COSIDA WEBSITE - The official website of CoSIDA, CoSIDA.com contains the latest information on job openings, transactions, Workshop schedules, contest results, award winners, general business and a wealth of other information on the organization. We gladly accept submissions of non-commercial material relating to CoSIDA and the college sports information profession. Please send submissions to: Director of External Affairs Barb Kowal at barbkowal@cosida.com.

CONTESTS - CoSIDA sponsors a variety of brochure and program contests for its members. Every SID at every level, and in most sports, has an opportunity to receive recognition for his or her work. And it is no small honor to win an award since the judging is done by news media and magazine personnel who utilize those brochures and publications in their work. There is also an annual writing contest that recognizes this important area of the sports information profession.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAMS - Founded by CoSIDA in 1952, the Academic All-America Teams program recognizes and awards our nation's premier college scholar-athletes for their ability to achieve excellence on the playing field and in the classroom. CoSIDA selects 816 student-athletes to six men's teams (soccer, football, basketball, baseball, at-large and track & field/cross country) and six women's teams (soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, at-large and track & field/cross country) in Division I, II and III and NAIA in all NCAA championship sports.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HALL OF FAME - Created in 1988, the Academic All-America Hall of Fame honors former Academic All-Americas who have graduated at least 10 years ago, have achieved success in their professional careers and have committed themselves to making their community a better place through charitable work. An induction ceremony is held annually to honor the deserving class representatives. For a complete listing of Academic All-America Hall of Fame members, please visit the Academic All-America section of our website.

COMMITTEE WORK - There are more than 20 active CoSIDA committees which are working throughout the year and seek input from the membership on how things should be done. These range from workshop social and program units to ethics and gambling awareness committees. CoSIDA calls this immediate involvement.

COSIDA SCHOLARSHIPS - A CoSIDA project is the awarding of scholarships to deserving college students who have made extensive contributions to the sports information office at his or her school. The recipient receives a scholarship to the school of his or her choice.
