US Open Series 2009: Elena Dementieva, Sam Querrey officially declared winners »

Russian world number four Elena Dementieva and American Sam Querrey clinched the 2009 Olympus US Open Series women’s and men’s titles respectively after both players accumulated enough points based on their spectacular performances for the past few weeks.

Dementieva will now attempt to duplicate the feat of Belgian former world number one Kim Clijsters in 2005 where the latter both won the US Open Series and the US Open title which created a record $2.2 paycheck, still the biggest single paycheck in women’s sports history.

The total prize money for this year’s US Open tennis has increased by $1 million compared to 2008 which means that the players will certainly get to see some differences in the cash prize money. The total cash prize money has topped $21.6 million and could go as high as $24.2 million if the top three players at the US Open Series also make it in the latter stages of the tournament, thanks to the $2.6 million potential payout.

The men’s and women’s singles champions get $1.6 million and the new 2010 Lexus IS Convertible each.

US Open Tennis 2009: Qualifying matches begin »

The qualifying matches for this year’s US Open tennis has officially begun on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 with a total cash prize of $1 million at stake.

The matches are said to take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York and will run for four days.

There are 32 berths at stake at the singles draw (16 for women, 16 for men) and in order to reach that far, players will need to win three grueling matches.

Russian Elena Dementieva suddenly became a strong contender in the upcoming U.S. Open after she won the prestigious Rogers Cup title last Sunday, beating compatriot Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3. The title win also propelled the Russian atop the US Open Series rankings.

This served as the first time for an all-Russian final in the tournament’s history. Dementieva stormed into the finals after defeating no. 2 Serena Williams, a sweet revenge after the former lost their previous encounter at the Wimbledon semifinals last month.

Fatherhood has definitely not affected Roger Federer’s game which is evidenced by his victory in last Sunday’s Cincinnati Masters.

The world number one defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the ATP 1000 tournament final 6-1, 7-5. This served as his first title win since his twin girls were born last month.

“That’s the special part, especially winning for the first time as a dad. It gets me going emotionally a little bit, because I know it’s been a wonderful summer,” Federer said after his win.
