Niche Marketing Strategy - Finding a Niche You Can Scratch

Posted on February 15, 2008 01:20 PM by Joel Comm

There is a lot of talk about niche marketing strategies. What are the things that smart marketers do to get their site listed high on the search engines?

Well, things online have changed dramatically since I got started in 1995.

Back then you could register killer domains for a song and be the first kid on the block to have a site established in a major niche.

But as the years have passed, certain sites have come to dominate the broader niches (which is pronounced "nitch" and NOT "neesh") with key niche marketing strategies, leaving only bread crumbs for those who want to compete.

Or is that the whole truth?

I believe there are still thousands of untapped niches, or micro-niches.

For example, you may not want to go head-to-head with Yahoo! Travel or Expedia in the travel niche.

But what about narrowing the niche to air travel, adventure travel or cruises?

Still too broad to compete?

No problem!

Define a micro-niche such as adventure travel in the Himalayas, camping in the Rocky Mountains or cruises for people with special needs!

Now take that same approach to absolutely any niche and you will find that there is always opportunity.

And once you have established your niche, use key niche marketing strategies to get the word out and dominate your niche.

Some of these strategies include proper search engine optimization, a healthy balance of keywords, email campaigns and perhaps pay-per-click to drive traffic.

If you are excited about your chosen topic, working your site will be a labor of love. In fact, you could say that you have found "a niche you can scratch" ;-)

    Thanks, Joel.
The idea of micro-niche is a great one! I've got a few ideas for some filling my head already. I hope they don't spill out!(smile).
Seriously speaking though, this opens up possibilities for the average John Q. Public to corner the market on a particular micro niche and clean up! I'm gonna start scratching that niche....

Awesome post Joel. I agree 110% This might seem like a strange strategy, but I tend to take a global sized niche and market and promote inside out. Most people when they read a book, they start by opening the cover. Most writers when the write a book, start by writing the first page. With me, when I focus on a niche a broad one, I start deep within and create an implosion, rather than an explosion. If I want to hit and compete for real estate, I know that isn't going to happen. But having a big picture on the goal at hand, I'll create many micro sites and establish them and then later tie all those sites into an umbrella site or hub.

Very cool post Joel and I love the new look!

    Best Regards,
    Garry Conn

Hi Joel: Wonderful post and I can totally relate to this. My book is about a widow's journey through loss, grief and renewal. It is a niche all its own in grief, but then further defined and drilled down to loss of a spouse, which is different from loss of a child or loss of a loved one. I am immersed in exploring niche marketing right now for the book.

Great tip! You just gave me an idea since I am in the credit resolution business. This is a saturated niche. I know how to make it into a micro-niche. This makes it a lot more doable and profitable. I know I will achieve success.

Great post, Joel, and spot on.

When talking about the key niche marketing strategies, I'd add to keep writing high quality content no matter what. It's the key step towards getting free traffic from the Search Engines.

    Content, content, content.

Okay, I've read all the posts here, and they are great, but I still don't know how to find my skills and knowledge. I don't know 3 close people. I don't want anyone to know what I am doing because it always seems that people like to kill your dreams and I don't want that. I want to be private about it. I've written a ton of lists and to no avail, no ideas that reasonate with me. It's sad actually because I want to do this. Any other ideas?
