Breaking News: R’ Leib Tropper Resigns as Rosh Yeshiva of Kol Yaakov

Wednesday February 3, 2010 3:48 PM - 44 Comments

kol-yaakovJust in: R’ Leib Tropper has resigned as the rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Kol Yaakov on Maple Avenue in Monsey, NY. The move comes a month and a half after he resigned from his position at the Eternal Jewish Family (EJF) “to pursue a variety of other interests.” Efforts to contact him for comment regarding his most recent resignation have proved fruitless.

Kol Yaakov Torah Center was founded in 1981 by R’  Tropper after he left Yeshiva Ohr Somayach in Monsey. He worked at

Yeshiva Shema Yisroel when it split into Aish HaTorah and Ohr Somayach. When Ohr Somayach sent Rabbi Braun and Rabbi Rokowsky to Monsey, he went with them, but only stayed a short while before leaving and starting his own yeshiva nearby.

Rabbi Dovid Stefansky, a maggid shiur at the yeshiva, will assume the position of rosh yeshiva of Kol Yaakov.

Rae: I am not privy to what your comments are, but this story has a lot of underlying issues. I’m sure you’re aware of these, and that is undoubtedly the tone that your comments probably took. So I would like to say shkoiach to Matzav editors for not letting them through, and keeping the lashon nekia in the discussion.

With all due respect to this nice website, why is this newsworthy?

MATZAV.COM RESPONDS:

After lengthy deliberations and discussions, it was determined that the right thing to do was publish exactly what we did. There is a toeles and a cheshbon in doing so, and we hope we have fulfilled what the goal was.

Tropper has to be commended for fufilling the wishes of Monsey and all Jewish communities. He is instrumental in bringing back some faith in people doing the right thing, no matter how belatedly. He brings happiness. His departure is a blessing.

MATZAV.COM RESPONDS:

After lengthy deliberations and discussions, it was determined that the right thing to do was publish exactly what we did. There is a toeles and a cheshbon in doing so, and we hope we have fulfilled what the goal was.

Dear Matzav.com,

What you write makes much sense.

But you ought to clearly spell out what the toeles and the cheshbon is in publishing it. This will help insure that people understand what the toeles is, and help you better accomplish that toeles. There is no reason to not specify what your cheshbon is.

Would you be so kind to respond to this comment, hopefully with my request fulfilled?

Yasher Koach

MATZAV.COM RESPONDS:

Your comment is well taken, but there are times when not everything can be articulated publicly. Trust us, though, that this post was not a mistake, was not haphazard, and was not an oversight or an abandonment of our standards.

do ppl not realize that god is everywhere? do they think they can be hateful on the web and he wouldn’t know? lets stop bashing, it gets us nowhere. and to the one who implied negativity about the rubashkin situation, HAVE YOU NO HEART?! this is besides the fact the moderator posted your comment, one which is not to complementary of the issue, so don’t go spewing hatred, there’s quite enough of that! i hope that we can unite as one nation and not focus on others faults and differences, after all THERE WAS ONLY 1 LINE TO THE GAS CHAMBERS!!! lets hope we can realize that we are all 1 ppl without that message.

Myself, and hundreds of others, owe a tremendous hakaras hatov to the Tropper family.
They welcomed us into their home and always treated us with kindness and respect.

Everyone would be lucky to have someone in their life with as much ahavas yisroel and instinctive chesed as the Troppers.

o the moderators- it is amaizing to me to see how much cencorship there is with this story compared to other stories and comments that people have no difficulty in making disparaging remarks about a Rabbi Riskin, or the zoo Rabbi for example. Looks like nothing other than good old cronyism.

Response to #31: “There was only 1 line to the gas chambers.” So true. Now go post that on every discussion here where somebody maligns Conservative and Reform Jews, putting Jew or shul or rabbi in quotations. Stick to your guns. And accept that not every Jew feels as you do about the Rubashkin situation, by the way.

Ha’gam Ratzachta V’gam Yarashta? How does a community force a person out of the institution he built and devoted years to? Do they own it? Did they do anything for it? Nope. No one was there to fill a void that Rabbi Tropper decided to fill. He built. And put hours into producing Talmidei Chachamim, Yereim Ushlaymim. It would be gratifying to see those who got their first sweet taste of Torah from him come forward with their names, just as I am doing, to repay what they can never repay. He is father to thousands, for someone who teaches Torah to someone is their father. And Monsey and the bloggers think they own his success and his Yeshiva and can “inherit” it just with their bullying attitude. What ownership do they have here? None.

(Goldy-
You are so right! I apologize for not putting my name here.)

Rabbi Tropper taught me Torah, helped with with shidduchim, with kibud av v’ aim, davening…so much. He was even mesader kiddushin at my wedding. The Troppers truly treated me like family. They treat all of their guests with honor and respect. We can all learn so much from them.

Thank you, Rabbi Tropper!

Rav Elya Svei had what to say 20 years ago. If people would have listened then, we would have avoided much aggravation.

43. Comment from Talmid of R Tress, zt’l, and R Tropper
Time February 4, 2010 at 11:00 PM

Both R’ Tropper and Rabbi Tress, zt’l, started the yeshiva together. I believe R’ Tropper first approached Rabbi Tress. Either way, anyone who does not understand that R’ Tropper has some amazing kochos and many amazingly good traits misses the point. It is his greatness that makes his fall so tragic. This is not a day to celebrate. This is a day to tear kriyah and sit on the floor. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have resigned. I’m only saying it’s a tragedy. And those who jump on the bandwagon with glee at his downfall only disgrace klal Yisrael and add tragedy to tragedy.
