'Emmerdale' peaks at 9.9 million

Emmerdale's double bill peaked at 9.9m during Thursday's episodes, overnight figures show.

The rural soap's two Thursday episodes, during which Mark's hatred of his family culminated in him being shot by his wife Natasha, pulled in an average of 8.68m (36.9%) and 9.43m (37.3%) at 7pm and 8pm on ITV1. Its second episode peaked at 9.93m (38.5%) between 8.20pm and 8.25pm.

The show's second ep average was the soap's highest ratings since drawing 9.77m (43.9%) on March 13, 2006. Last week, Emmerdale topped the 9m mark for the first time in three years.

BBC soap EastEnders, meanwhile, was the most-watched soap of the day, pulling in 10.33m (41.3%) for its latest screening, which saw Ian throwing Archie's laptop into the canal. BBC Three's repeat at 10pm added 858k (3.9%).

Coronation Street's edition had 10.04m (38.2%) from 8.30pm, while its repeat on ITV2 added a further 220k (3.5%) from midnight.

It is the fifth Thursday in a row that EastEnders has pipped Corrie to the post in the ratings battle.

Doctors' instalment, yesterday titled 'Reckless', drew 2.08m (23%) from 1.45pm.

Five's Australian soap hour began with 1.7m (9.3%) tuning in for Neighbours, before 1.18m (5.5%) stayed with the channel for Home and Away.

Fiver's first look at Home and Away took 636k (2.7%), while 144k (0.6%) caught Neighbours' 7pm repeat.

Hollyoaks managed 1.46m (6.3%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 and E4's first look put in 541k (2.3%) half an hour later. E4+1's timeshift repeat added 129k (0.5%).
