The Best Games of 2009

by Jason Dietz, Metacritic Features Editor December 9, 2009

Lists, lists and more lists … and our platform of the year

2009 Game Platform Power Rankings
1 Playstation 3
2 PC
3 Xbox 360
5 Nintendo DS
6 Wii

Sony’s Playstation 3 console has edged out Microsoft’s once-dominant Xbox 360 to finish on top in Metacritic’s first annual Game Platform Power Rankings.

The Power Rankings combine a variety of factors — all involving the quality and quantity of titles released during the year — to rank the six major gaming platforms. Although Xbox 360 finished with the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher), and though Nintendo’s Wii had the largest total number of releases (a whopping 362, or almost one per day), the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year’s top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Note that sales figures are not included in the platform or game rankings; if they were, the Wii, which is expected to sell almost twice as many titles as PS3 this year, would have a distinct advantage. Instead, the popular Wii platform had a poor year in terms of game quality, with critics liking just 28% of games released for the platform. We’ll report more on the connection between reviews and sales (or, in this case, the lack of such a connection) in January, after final 2009 sales data is released.

Overall, we did not see quite as many blockbuster releases in 2009 as we expected, even though we are now deep into the lifecycles of the current generation of consoles and handhelds. Many of those expected "AAA" titles scheduled for release during the pre-holiday period (October through Thanksgiving weekend) were pushed into the traditionally calm waters of early 2010, avoiding some of this fall’s giants (Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3 ODST) and thus delaying some of the most significant battles in the platform wars.

Below, we list the best-reviewed games for each gaming platform. First, however, let’s take a look at how each platform fared during the past year.

Platform Breakdown, 2009
Platform # Titles # Great Median Metascore % Good % Mixed % Bad
1 Playstation 3 228 10 72.0 43% 50% 7% 43,50,7
2 PC Games 306 7 72.5 43% 49% 9% 43,49,9
3 Xbox 360 279 7 70.0 35% 55% 11% 35,55,11
4 PSP 125 1 69.0 36% 57% 7% 36,57,7
5 Nintendo DS 329 3 69.0 27% 62% 10% 27,62,10
6 Wii 362 1 67.0 28% 59% 13% 28,59,13

The table reflects scores for all games in Metacritic’s database released between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009. All Metascore data is from December 7, 2009. The # Great indicates the number of games released during the year with a Metascore of 90 or higher. The % Good reflects the percentage of games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher (indicating positive reviews). % Mixed shows the percentage receiving a Metascore of 50-74 (indicating mixed or middling reviews), while % Bad includes games receiving a Metascore below 50 (indicating negative reviews). Percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding. Games with fewer than 4 reviews are not scored and are not included in the percentage or median calculations above.

Sony clearly had a strong year in terms of game quality, with titles for both of its platforms (Playstation 3 and PSP) receiving better reviews on the whole than games for similar platforms. The two Sony platforms also had a fewer percentage of bad releases than any other platforms, so although PS3 and PSP gamers might not have had as many titles to choose from, they were less likely to buy a terrible game. In fact, PS3 owners could choose from some of the top-rated games of the year:

Best-Reviewed Games (Any Platform), 2009
  Platform Title Genre Metascore Users
1 PS3 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Action, Adventure 96 9.5
2 PS3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 First-Person Shooter 94 5.4
Users vented their anger about developer Infinity Ward’s decision not to permit dedicated servers for this title by hammering the game on Metacritic.
3 PS3 Street Fighter IV Fighting 94 8.0
4 Xbox 360 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 First-Person Shooter 94 6.0
5 Nintendo DS Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Action, Adventure 93 9.0
6 PS3 Braid Puzzle, Platform 93 9.4
7 Xbox 360 Street Fighter IV Fighting 93 7.4
8 PS3 God of War Collection Action, Adventure 92 9.5
9 Xbox 360 Batman: Arkham Asylum Action, Adventure 92 8.4
10 Xbox 360 Forza Motorsport 3 Racing, Driving 92 8.1

Games must have at least 5 reviews to qualify for the above list. The Metascore is a weighted average of scores from top professional critics, on a scale from 0 (bad) to 100 (good). User scores represent an average of scores assigned by site visitors.

Which games received the best overall reviews from top game publications during 2009? Let’s check the individual platforms…

2009 has clearly been the year of the PS3, while I believe that 2008 was a toss-up between the 360 (quality) and Wii (quantity). Now if Sony could just put a push behind quality games for the PSP, they’d be in business!

Comment by Marie on 12/10/09 at 11:31am  |  Link to this

So without Braid which had already been on the 360 for over a year with the same score 360 and PS3 had the same number in the top ten for the year.

Worth noting.

Someone goofed. I see a note under MW2 for the PS3 and it says users vented their anger about the game. But it doesn’t say it for the 360 version. If users are going to vent wouldn’t they vent against the PC version? They’re the ones who were mad.

Comment by Ejsponge61 on 12/10/09 at 1:43pm  |  Link to this

I’m glad to see that the PS3 is finally getting the acclaim it deserves. Now maybe my friends will get one, because none of them do. And I cant believe that ODST got an 83, I thought that it was Microsoft’s only big title to compete with Uncharted 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wii, which both scored way higher. And I’m also surprised to see the Wii at the bottom of the list, well, not really, they did only have a few OK games this year. And I’m glad to see the PSP was in a respectable place, seeing as I’m getting a PSP Go for the holidays.

Comment by major on 12/10/09 at 1:44pm  |  Link to this

@Marie hahahaah ,There is only one exclusive (not downloadable title) on the Xbox360 which scored 90 or above while the Ps3 had 4 titles scorning 90 or above ,let’s not forget the other ps3 exclusives which scored above 85 ,the Ps3 beat the X360 this year by a land slide it’s not even funny
2008 was ps3 year; most of the awards were for Ps3 titles not X360

anyway Keep spinning guys

Marie, you, like metacritics who stupidly count 2 versions of the same game on the top ten, don’t want to see others great titles, exclusives to ps3, like killzone, etc : ps3 has since more than one year more great exclusives, and the best one, it’s a fact, and braid is not one of them.

Comment by jason on 12/10/09 at 2:03pm  |  Link to this

I am glad the PS3 finally has its moment to shine. I believe it had an unbelieveble line up in 2008, but clearly 2009 has easily topped it. Having both a 360 and a PS3, I can say the PS3 has really shown me it was worth the $599 at launch, and with PSN getting amazingly good every single day, PS3 is definately the console of choice for me.

It is refreshing to see the PS3 finally have a knockout year. With the dominance of Xbox 360 in 2006, 2007 and 2008, Sony was aware of the need to score some big hits and managed to do just that and more. Sony’s push for quality exclusives this year – which will continue into 2010 – is a definite step in the right direction for defining the PS3 as the console of choice f0r top-notch, unique games.

Comment by Jason Dietz on 12/10/09 at 2:45pm  |  Link to this

Truther: The platforms are actually ranked according to a number of factors, not just the median Metascore. So while PC did indeed have the highest median, PS3 won out overall.

So what are the other factors? Surely, without publishing what those actual factors are, your numbers are meaningless. Unless you are counting the differences in the actual numbers, ala PS3 7% of bad games compared to PC with 9%, then the PC, as a platform, actually won.

Also, whatever formula you used is flawed. Since you base it on 100%, the PC had an overall score of 101%. 43%+49%+9% = 101%. So, what are you going to deduct from to make it 100%? Knowing metacritic, it’ll probably be the good percent.

Has anyone at Metacritic taken a statistics course? Conclusions drawn from statistics are only worthwhile when the methods used are transparent. Statistics can be used to reach pretty much any conclusion.

For example from the data you’ve provided I reach the conclusion that:

The pc is the best platform this year because it has the highest number of good and great games.

Or how about the psp is obviously the best platform this year because it had the least amount of bad games.

If there are other factors you take into account than reveal these factors. Otherwise your conclusions are worthless.

so although PS3 and PSP gamers might not have had as many titles to choose from,
The ps3 has more exclusives releasing than xbox so how does it have less titles to choose from?. I think you should do an exclusives comparison, would be far more interesting.

Comment by Paul-G on 12/10/09 at 5:06pm  |  Link to this

hmmm, very controversial. I think you should probably publish your full methodology because it doesn’t really make sense at the moment.

PC had the highest median score, the equal highest percentage of good games, the largest number of good games, and 4 of the 8 games that make up the top 10 were multi-platform and clearly the best version was the PC version for all of them. I’m talking about MW2, batman, SF4 and Braid. How can you just blindly follow the statistics when the statistics don’t produce a fair cross-platform analysis? You know very well that PC games are rated to a different standard than console games.

Wow, I’m sorry you have to deal with such idiots in your comments. I honestly can’t believe you have people whining about statistics courses and methodology. I’m glad you guys are giving the PS3 the credit it deserves, as well as not listening to the ballistic xbots and wii fanboys. It seems like the people yelling the loudest have the most work to do to defend their system while PS3’s quality speaks for itself.

Wow, the PS3 finally had a good year. Took them long enough. Now if only people would buy the games and the system, they might be able to avoid bankruptcy. That’s the PS3’s main problem; the attachment rate. Enjoy one year of stellar games Sony, because Microsoft is taking back the throne next year. It’s already started with Black Friday.

wow, I love how the fanboys/fangirls come out in force everytime a list like this is put up. 360 and PS3 both have distinct, yet differetn advantages, and that’s as far into that as I’m going.

P.S. ROFLOL at the Wii, 362 games released and only ONE in the 90’s, and a low 90 at that. that’s a whole bunch of different kinds of sad and pathetic

The top 10 for the year looks pretty even for PS3 and 360 (Braid is already out for 360). If someone already has a 360, they aren’t going to buy a PS3, since that money would be better spent on new games. So PS3 marks, please calm down. You all are finally catching up to xbox, enjoy it. And no need for anyone to get all defensive about 360 either, theres plenty of good games out there for that system and more on the way.

The METHEDOLIGY and approach is at best Subjectively FLAWED. Since Jason Dietz is METACRITIC and there isn’t any outside industry review of how things are aggregated, He can make statistics whatever he chooses. Naming a console console of the year when the MARKET is the ultimate decider is extremely pretentious. Good to see you wanted to get an end of the year pub line to make your site relevant.

all these PS-hating dudes, comparing the pc and PS considered only the 0.5% difference; aren’t these 3 blockbusters more important? I mean, i bought about 10 PS games this year, so I actually don’t give a crap that a game scored 72.5% : I would probably buy it if I run out of hits such as U2:AT or R&C.

Nice meaningless data there metacritic! The median of the PC is 72.5 and PS3 is 72. Then you say that other means went into finding the best overall platform. Well for one, it shows it as being sorted by median, yet it really isn’t. Then you don’t even tell us what other means were used? Wtf? This is stupid. This data means nothing. All of the consoles are perfectly fine and they all have equally good games. We don’t need metacritic to tell us which one is better than the other. You play video games to have fun. If you like it, you like it. It doesn’t matter what the people at Metacritic have to say about it. By the way. I’m a proud PS3 owner, and I actually am pleased to see the PS3 getting some recognition, but this data is meaningless. What a waste of inernetzz.

The best Wii game I played this year came from a small publisher and got fairly average reviews — Real Heroes: Firefighter. I suspect that the reviews may have been comparing it to PS3 and 360 games as much as to its Wii competitors.

My problem with all of this is the number of bad games on a system isn’t really important at all, most people don’t bother to play them, only the good games are important and then raw totals are more important than percentages; its not people buy and are forced to play random games.

There’s no winner because games are basically all across platform theses days. So in the end it’s all a wash. I never understood why console owners feel the need to argue that their console is better than the others. There’s so many different factors at play that it’s just personal preference in the end.

Why is the ps3 version of call of duty higher ranked on the top ten list than the 360 version when they have the same scores? Shouldn’t they be the same? Or 360 higher seeing as it has the same score but more reviews and better user reviews. Seems like an overly bias article to boost Ps3’s reputation… maybe metacritic accepted a large cheque from Sony;)

Isn’t this just a matter of taste?
PS3 – Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Infamous, Demon’s Souls, Flower, Fat Princess, Noby Noby Boy. God of War Collection and Wipeout hardly count, those games are old.

360 – Forza 3, ODST, Left 4 Dead 2, GTA4 content, Trials HD, Shadow Complex, Splosion Man.

I really don’t get the ‘Year of the PS3′ argument, it’s been a great year for everyone. It just hasn’t been a shit year for Sony for a change.
Uncharted 2 is my favourite game of the year, but Killzone 2 was totally AIDS so it all balances out.
Most of the best games in 2009 were available for both, and practically identical for both, so who really gives a shit?

all they have done is compared games and made an average, seems fair, nothing wrong. Just shows what console is superior, and shows the morons that say PS3 has no good games and exclusive games..

Let’s all stop this stupid fighting.
PS3, truly was the best console this year.
i played Halo ODST and it’s crap, PS3 deserves to be console of the year for Unchartd 2 alone, it’s epic.
I have a 360 and i’ve finally sold it, cos they’re just terrible.
They lost their exclusive deal over Mass Effect, 2 is coming to PS3.
and SONY aren’t going to go bankrupt, cos they have reserves from every other PS console.
Also, you said XBOX is king next year, we have Heavy Rain, which is being classed as the greatest game ever made.

I see most of the idiots are actually just looking at the chart of witch it seems like that the Playstation 3 did not do as good as the Xbox 360. I agree that Braid should have never been included and for the most part, every single multiplatform game should have not been included.

Instead, there should be a list of exclusive games from 85 and up presented head to head and you will realise how many games the Playstation 3 has compared to the Xbox 360 this year.

The list here still makes the Xbox 360 exclusives look like shit because Uncharted 2 is ranked above every other game this year even though it’s just a single Playstation 3 exclusive versus Forza 3 Motorsport that is all the way at the bottom of the chart. That is ONE Xbox 360 exclusive that did well.

Every other exclusive released on Xbox 360 with the exception of ODST (witch was a overhyped expansion pack) did medicore to abysmal, and they were also on the PC. Velvet Assassian, Darkest Of Days, Section 8. All medicore to garbage.

Compared to Killzone 2, Infamous, Demon Souls and Ratchet and Clank Future: A crack in time. Not including Uncharted 2 because everyone knows and can see that it’s ranked at the very top of every other game including the industries biggest smash hit sales beast Modern Warfare 2 of 2009.

All those Playstation 3 exclusives I mentioned scored 85 and above. So anybody arguing that the Xbox 360 did as well as the Playstation 3 this year is irrelavent. It is what it is. 5 Playstation 3 exclusives VS 1 Xbox 360 exclusive. That’s not including DLC, or Downloadable OR console exclusives. (Meaning likely to be on PC as well. Case in point, Left 4 Dead 2)

Bottom line is, Playstation 3 kicked everyones ass this year. The most critisized console of all time that is in last place in sales will continue to receive propaganda, doom articles, and rabid fanboys saying it sucks, and maybe even stay in last place, but it will continue to receive the best games on the market.

And true gamers with enough sense will flock to where the games are at. Not flap their mouth because there is a bunch of kick ass exclusives that is not on their console of choice.

Thanks, Meta, for this excellent digest. Sorry for the angry little kids who need to defend their platform idolatry by attacking straightforward mathematics–they’re no different from religious zealots, which is the saddest and most pathetic thing *ever.* It must be so weird for you guys to face this, as video, music and movie critique somehow just doesn’t seem to get as political.

Haters, calm the eff down, buy games, and enjoy them. What’s the matter with you? Why do you have to act like this? It gains you nothing. It just makes you look stupid.

Uncharted 2 deserves game of the year; went over to my friends house and played a little and I can see why he calls it the best game ever.
I own a 360, and I would say that my personal favorite title this year was Borderlands. (No, NOT MW2, that game wasn’t worth the money). Fifa 10 is actually pretty good, too.
As for the wii…well nothing good has come out since, like…Brawl (except maybe Okami, my friend says its good). The Metroid Prime trilogy was a brilliant idea, I own the first three and I’m still tempted to buy it :) But dammit I own just about every good wii exclusive (Brawl, Metroid, Twilight Princess, Galaxy, Mario Strikers, World of Goo, Wii Sports) and after you beat them the only thing you can do when you’ve beat these games is play Brawl, which I’m OK with I just wish something huge would come out before I have to wait for Metroid oM

Shadow Complex is not, I repeat NOT, based on the Orson Scott Card novel but the Empire Universe created by Chair Entertainment that the novel takes place in. Card’s involvement in the project is only in writing a novel in the universe, not in the creation of the Universe itself which is Chair’s. Go read both the Wikipedia article on Chair and the About section on Chair’s Website and you’ll find this out. Please, please do better research in the future.

The PC got 78 more games released this year than the ps3, and the scores are still high so even though it got a lot of releases, they weren’t crappy shovelware releases. So we got just about the same quality and a large amount more quantity at the same time. Why did the PC not win?

I have an XBox360 but have always loved the PS3. Can’t wait to get one. This is why I hate fanboys-you people go crazy defending a machine made by multibillion dollar coorporations that don’t give a f*ck about you. It’s OKAY TO LIKE THE OTHER SYSTEMS! You act like you’re committing treason, it’s sad.The PS3 had way better exclusives thew last 2 years and when I look at the future (Heavy Rain, God of War3, Quantum Theory, ect) the PS3 isn’t even in its prime yet and that’s exciting. Not to say I’m not psyched for the 360 exclusives like Splinter Cell, Fable 3, and Halo Reach. It’s just a great time to be a gamer right now.

You won’t hear me debate the fact that Uncharted 2 was the game of the year. It was the best-reviewed, and considering I’ve never cared about the PS3 it’s the first game that is actually edging me to get one. However, wouldn’t it have been more fair (and much less convoluted) to just tabulate the best-reviewed games of the year overall instead of splitting them up by platform? For games appearing on multiple platforms, just average the review scores and place them accordingly, unless a tremendous amount of parity exists (which it usually doesn’t; 360/PS3/PC scores tend to be within a point of each other).

Sony wins out over Microsoft because of Tomb Rai.. I mean Uncharted 2. (Sorry I get the two confused all the time what with the tomb raiding and treasure hunting. Who woulda thunk it?) I’m perturbed by the fact that Modern Warfare2 is on the list only for the PS3 seeing as it’s sold more units on the 360. (it also has a lower rating on the PS3 yet it’s ahead of the 360 version.. hm that’s weird.) I know alot of people throw around console partiality but come on.. the 360 had Fable 2 – ODST – L4D2 and a host of other games and the PS3 had what again? (hell I’ve forgotten and I own one.) Oh, the PS3 had Uncharted 2 and um… Uncharted 2.. sweet.

Arkham Asylum should have won for PC. If you look; Street Fighter 4, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Dragon Age: Origins all have the same reviewer score. In that case the winner should have been determined by user score (since it is listed after all) . That’s just my opinion, and everyone has one of those, including the people who created the list.

There’s an important piece of information that’s being left out. that is sales. It’s easy to look at the top ten list and make some false assumptions. If the Xbox version of Modern Warfare 2, for instance, sold nearly twice as many units- why is it listed #4 instead of #2? It’s easy to say that the PS3 had better games- but if more people are buying the Xbox 360 version then how does the PS3 come out on top?

Uncharted 2 was an expensive game to make and it has sold nearly 2 million units. Halo 3 ODST has outsold it.

The next issue I have with this way of rating the consoles against each other is the fact that there are 50 or so more Xbox 360 titles available. If a majority of these aren’t superior titles then it would place the Xbox 360 at a unrecoverable disadvantage.

Until Metacritic shows more work in their list- it’s hard to take it seriously as a tool for rating one platform against the other.

Comment by MW2 = Horrible on 12/13/09 at 8:35pm  |  Link to this

Just to clarify, users gave MW2 a low score because they felt it was bad. We didn’t “vent anger by rating it low,” rather we were angry because the product was horrible, and we rated it accordingly. In this case, the actual end users disagree with establishment corporate reviewers. On other sites MW2 has cumulative user ratings of 2/10 and lower.

The refusal to implement such a demanded feature as dedicated servers is only one of MANY reasons why MW2 bombed so hard (and hence why real life users rated it so low). Lengthy lists of the epic blunders in this release can be found in viral videos, articles and forums, all generated by the actual end users. The low score isn’t a result of anger; rather the anger is a result of a horrible product, and the low score reflects that.

I know this is all mathematical but the fact the 360 GOTY is MW2, with a user rating of 6, is pretty lame. In terms of something interesting, new, fun and original i’d have to go with Borderlands.

Counting a re-release of two PS2 games from several years ago, and a port of a year old 360 title? That doesn’t seem like a particularly strong sign of PS3 dominance when a lot better titles could be cited (maybe not in reviewers eyes, but certainly in player’s).

Furthermore, with the sheer quantity of PC indie titles and such that likely go unreviewed, is it credible to give any kind of quality assessment to the PC? The problem is compounded when you factor in the technical difficulties that would prevent some people from playing the PC version (example: The Saboteur not running for those with ATI cards), thus creating an uneven experience with the game.

Nice list and all but why is the 360 version of MW2 at #4 and the PS3 version is at #2. Don’t they both have a score of 94? Why is the 360 #4 eventhough the User grade is higher than the PS3’s.

My question is what makes the PS3 MW2 that much better than the 360. Biased much?

I admit PS3 had a better year this year in gaming, espiacially in the exclusives, but MW2 is the same game no matter what platform it’s on. That sort chart just makes you look biased when it isn’t even necessary. Everybody knows PS3 had better games this year.

Comment by Grey on 12/14/09 at 2:46pm  |  Link to this

These all need to be taken with a grain of salt, and the inclusion of Braid is obviously a bit silly since it’s been on XBLA for over a year. But PS3 deserves some props this year, finally getting a killer app in Uncharted 2. Wipeout HD is another exclusive that adds a lot of value to the machine, even if it didn’t factor into this list.

That said, most of the games here are non-exclusive, and calling a “victor” is stupid. When duplicate cross-platform titles eat up such a good portion of the top-10 list, it only takes the one exclusive Uncharted 2 to throw the whole thing off.

On an unrelated note, I’m sad to see the Wii fall so far behind. If nothing else, Punch Out! deserved much higher reviews than it received. I know it’s cool to rag on the Wii, but it has some good stuff for hardcore gamers (Muramasa is another great exclusive), and deserves more respect than it gets.

Why is Braid up there if it was released on the 360 last year? Is it really that much better on the Ps3? I don’t think that Braid should count towards the PS3’s overall score unless it significantly improves on the 360 iteration. Also, why is that God of War re-release up there?

CC99999: I don’t think sales (i.e monetary gain) really reflect the success of a system. If you want to get technical, you can look at the billions of dollars that Microsoft has lost in both shipping and repairing broken consoles. Just because a game sold more doesn’t mean it is of higher quality and polish. I think the quality and build of a PS3 vs a 360, as well as the exclusives available this year, reflect that fact that just because more people own it, doesn’t mean its better (especially when we see how many 360s have broken down).

The median score is not the only thing determining which system wins here. Is anyone noticing the number of games that received a score of 90 or greater? Yeah, the median score of pc may be 72.5 compared to the PS3’s 72 for all games; but the PS3 had 4.4% of its games with a score of 90 or above, compared to the PCs 2.3% and xbox’s 2.5%. Also, If you read the fine print, you would know why some totals don’t add up to exactly 100%.

Comment by Luke on 12/15/09 at 3:15am  |  Link to this

Shoudln’t everyone be more worried that the AVERAGE score accross the industry is 7? I mean doesn;t this make it even harder to get decent scores or for us to get an idea of how much better than average there is if thers only 3 points to go? If the average game doesn;t score a average number (you would expect average to be 5, as its, you know, in the middle of 0 and 10). Currently people have a false idea as they assume that 7 = good, not average.

Also the wii having a median score that it did with an extra 100 or so releases isn’t that bad, especally as online mags love to review random titles that woudln’t even be touched when it comes to the 360 or PS3 versions of the random titles (yes, some of the “shovelware” is also out on the other consoles, but they never get review for some reason, only the wii versions?)

Besides Uncharted (which is a good game admittedly) we have Braid, which came out for the 360 a year ago and we have God of War Collection, which is a republishing of old material. These are the Úber games that “win” it for the P$3 crowd. If you are looking the REAL results, look at this tiny fact “XBOX 360 Median score 72.5 and P$3 72″

For you ppl illiterate in calculus, this means that on average (which metacritics scores are all about) the Xbox 360 still rules supreme :)

Median is not average. Median score is the score for which 50% of games are rated above and 50% of games are rated below. Average is the sum of scores for all games, divided by the number of games.

All platforms have a lot of mediocre trash, but a quick glance at the lists tells you that PS3 has far more games above 85% than the 360. This is what should count the upper n-percentile of games.

Multi-platform games are somewhat problematic. On the one hand new console buyers simply want to know which console has the best games. In this respect for Braid to count for the PS3 but not the 360 is biased. On the other hand, if the purpose of the ranking is to reflect the current state of the quality releases per platform as an indication of which platform has possibly a brighter future, then it is correct to disclude Braid from the 360.

Stepping away from the stats, Uncharted is really something special. Games scoring in the low 90s come out several times a year, but 95+ is very rare and puts it up in the pantheon of the Halo 1, FF7, Ocarina of Time, Metroid 1, Half-Life, BioShock, GTA 3 etc. This game is an ALL TIME great. Personally, the fact that it’s a PS3 exclusive steals the prize for the PS3 regardless of whatever else has been released for PS3 and/or 360, much like BioShock did for the 360 a couple of years ago. And like BioShock there might well be a day in that it makes a debut on the 360!

Disclaimer: I am a 360 owner, but Uncharted is serioiusly making me consider splashing out on a PS3!

its very simple. PC wins every year and will always win every year. And the old games on the Wii, like twilight princess, metroid, and mario galaxy are so good that they will be played for ever and ever no matter how dated they may get. So whatever these ratings may say on here, PS3 will never be the best. For no other reason than its impossible.

Uncharted 2 was a pretty fantastic game, far, far from perfect but still damn good. Street Fighter IV though, really? Good game though it was — it wasn’t one of the best of the year. Weird seeing Braid up there, thought that was an ‘08 title. Kind of a weak year all around. PS3 and 360 are kicking some ass though.

I don’t think cross platform games should greatly weigh in on this. Batman favored the PS3 and AC2 favored the 360 (greatly) but the editors of this article should have not have factored this in for the top titles or at least only acknowledge them. Remakes/Rehashes like the GOW series should be excluded and all the rehashes ported for the Wii and DS (which are 1/5 of the games) should also be excluded because it is not original title and no real development and game design was needed.

PS3 also looks good for 2010 with GOW3 and Heavy Rain (though i hate QTE). 2010 should also release the Natal for 360 and the motion controller for PS3. Wii will be Wii.

Regarding the consoles wars! Personally, I like the grudge between XBOX360 and PS3, we all win because of it! If you are a smart gamer, you probably keep all consoles in your home but buy only the BEST software available (regardless if that software is PS3 or XBOX360 exclusive!).

In gaming, PC is totally outdated! In fact, the old PC is dying slowly (it seems software theft it is not only illegal but also lethal!). WII has great potential but not this year it seems.

PS3 leads the 2009 charts because of better SOFTWARE! And that’s great, future stands like this! QUALITY GAMING SOFTWARE should prevail anytime!

1. I will never buy a game that has a Metacritic score of 94 and a User score of 54. I will rent it however.

2. After many hours of playing both (50+hours), I can surely say Uncharted 2 is a great game but Demon’s Souls is better! The latter is the real game of the year 2009!

Eh, well I think you have to consider the numbers as well. The PS3 released significantly fewer games than the 360 and possibly the DS/Wii, so that factors in…dunno though, guess it was a good year for Sony…

Comment by Cole on 1/1/10 at 12:24pm  |  Link to this

The difference in identical games that scored differently for 360 and ps3 is likely due to noticeable differences in the AMOUNT of reviews used to average. 360 almost always has at least 10 more reviews factored in than the ps3. SF4 notably is missing a 67 that the Onion rated for the 360 version where they apparently didn’t rate the ps3 version at all. On top of that, two of the top 10 games by sony were braid, originally released for 360 in 2008 as an exclusive, and the god of war collection which had GoW 1 and 2, both ps2 games released years ago. That game also only had 31 scores used to compile its average. I don’t care which console is better, I just hate seeing stats incorrectly or hastily compiled. If you’re going to do the research then do it, don’t just grab a bunch of scores without looking for explanations for the variance. But then again, that’s the biggest problem with metacritic: when you weigh all scores equally regardless of source, bias and ineptitude become mitigating factors.

Why is the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2 ranked above the 360 version? The metascores are the same and the user score is better on the 360 version.

And I find the difference in the number of reviews pretty much helps out the PS3. Braid for 360 has 57 critic reviews. Braid for PS3 has 12 critic reviews.

I think that the article is inspiring, but my point isn’t about that. People seem to avoid the obvious when it comes to the PS3, that is, whilst it isn’t as customisable as a PC, it is a lot more customisable than an xbox360. And that sells it for me. Think about it.
Fantastic job metacritic.

Well outside the PS3 winning, which it clearly did, I’d say this is a pretty lousy review of the 2009 year in video games. The PS3 obviously won, then 2nd should come Nintendo DS. The only thing holding it down at the 2nd lowest position, which is CRAP by the way, is the fact that making crappy shovelware for it is as easy as 1, 2, 3. With enough resources I could make one myself. Also it has wide appeal, and obviously is gonna have some little kid games made for it, which will not be reviewed well. However regardless of masses of crap, there’s still tons of fantastic games, far more than the PSP had. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Henry Hatsworth’s Puzzling Adventure, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (the superior version, with innovative controls instead of just being a lame rehash….), Scribblenauts, and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. And those are just the well-reviewed games that appeal to me. Name a single PSP exclusive that was as good as ANY of those. That’s right, none. Maybe the Monster Hunter game comes close but it’s still not as good. The PSP just has a ton of mediocre games scoring around 75. WHO CARES? Would you really not take 7 great games over 20 mediocre ones? Let’s face it if a game scores around a 75, it’s safe to say it’s a mediocre game. So by that standard the Wii just beat out every other platform every year. Right? Oh wait no MC has to pander to the fanboys…. This year the PSP had one AAA game, not even AAAE, and 15 AA, some of them not even AAE. Four games in it’s top 20 weren’t even scoring above 80 on average. The DS had one AAAE, one AAA, and 20 AA games. No games in it’s top 20 averaged below an 80. Soooo how’s it behind the PSP? Obviously because it’s what people want to hear, people want to be reaffirmed that a system that is basically crap (and this is coming from a PS3 lover) is better than a great innovative system like the DS.

Then to say the 360 was 3rd best. It was by far the worst this year. Metacritic forgets the fact that games come on multiple platforms, and multiplats should not count for as much as as exclusives. The 360 has practically no good exclusives in 2009. The Wii on the other hand had 18 AAE games. That’s a pretty good showing. Looking at the 360’s top 40 list I see…. about 3 exclusives. Then 2 DLC games. DLC doesn’t count…… why should it? It’s not a full game. A great flash game could be released but it being fantastic isn’t as significant as a great console game is it? That’s not a good sign. The rankings should go thus:

1. PS3
2. DS
3. PC
4. Wii
5. 360

I love the Wii so putting it all the way at #4 seems overly harsh, but the 3 systems above it had fantastic years. The 360 simply had no business even being considered to have had a good year.

I never understood this sort of fan behavior. People have such ridiculous attitude about their consoles. Ultimately, you’re buying a computer that runs gaming software. Undeniably, there are good reasons to own both. Good enough to be worth the price of admission. Presumably people who care which one wins only own one or the other, but it’s not as though declaring the PS3 the winner makes it any less a reality that you won’t be able to play Halo, L4D, or Mass Effect. And if we were to declare the Xbox 360 the winner in 2010, it wouldn’t change the fact that you’ll need a PS3 to play Heavy Rain or God of War 3.

Furthermore, what does it matter what someone else thinks? If you love ODST and L4D2, then the 360 was the better console for you. If you love Uncharted 2 and Infamous, the PS3 was better. Why either camp feels the need to convince other people that their personal tastes are superior is beyond me.

Ultimately, declaring a winner doesn’t only seem arbitrary to me. It seems pointless. The only people who should care are Sony and Microsoft (and Nintendo), and they really only care about their bottom line. Everything else is secondary.

Let it not be forgotten that the 360 had more high-quality games than the PS3 from 06-08. 1 year does not bring the PS3 up to par. Not yet.

i still believe 360 is the better of the two. how are you going to compare the exclusives of Forza 3, Gears of War (both), Halo 3 (forget ODST) Mass Effect and Fable II? The PS3 has, what, Little Big Planet, Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo and MGS4? You’ve got to remember to look at the entire picture, people. Surely, the PS3 had a much better year than 360 in 09. But quite frankly, it doesn’t matter. Unless it can outperform it in 2010, 2011 and 2012, 360 is the better sell. Just compare the top metacritic PS3 exclusive game scores of all time to the 360’s top metacritic exclusives of all time. You will see what i mean.

Paaradox Eternal-

Demon’s Souls, Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank Future: ACiT/ToD. Annnnnd those are just the ones I like….

And by the way, PS3 exclusive AAAE scores- 96, 95, 94, (92 if GoW Collection counts…), 91, 90

360 AAAE scores- 94, 94, 93, 92, 90

Fable and Mass Effect aren’t exclusive by the way. This thing called the PC exists people…… and multiplats are usually superior on it…….. especially RPGs…… and Fable and Mass Effect are both on it. Those don’t even require a very powerful PC, fairly average required specs, you could prolly run it on a really basic computer if you just got a decent graphics card that supported 3.0. I don’t know where you get your info, I’m guessing you’re some uninformed kid who doesn’t know what he’s talking about, just playing what everyone else does.

Then get into AAE games. The PS3 has Ratchet and Clank, Demon’s Souls (which should be AAAE, no question), inFAMOUS, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Resistance, MLB ‘08 The Show (not a baseball game fan but hey it’s a good game for what it is so I’m countin it), the Pixeljunk games…. and more! The 360 has what? Nothing? Oh right…

When Gran Turismo 5 is released and gets just as good reviews as Forza Motorsport 3, the comparative quality won’t even be… well, comparable! Uncharted 2 takes Gears of War down in its category (third person shooter, then UC2 has even more than just shooting….), Killzone 2 and Halo 3 are fairly close, Gran Turismo 5 and FM3 should be close, the 360 has absolutely nothing to even answer to LittleBigPlanet, and the same with Metal Gear Solid 4. The only thing the 360 has on the PS3 right now is racing games…. oooooooo racing games great, let’s get some real games out there, not driving ones.

Also getting down to variety… PS3’s AAAE titles, a Third-person shooter/platformer/action-adventure game, Third-person stealth shooter, 2.5-D platformer with fully customizable levels, realistic FPS, and a baseball game. The 360? A space-marine FPS, two space-marine TPSs, and two racing games. Slight lack of variety on the 360 much?

The 360 can win in quantity, but it will never beat the PS3’s current quality. Actually the only thing it has quantity in is multiplats that are better on PC anyway so that doesn’t count for much…. there’s just no defending the 360 outside its superior online play, which is partially ruined since it costs $50 a year, which could be another game….

“Uncharted 2 takes Gears of War down in its category (third person shooter, then UC2 has even more than just shooting….)”

I haven’t completed Uncharted 2 yet, but it’s very good so far. And having played Gears and Gears 2, I can safely say, from personal experience, that the games are not remotely similar to Uncharted 2. There is shooting, and there is cover. But the entire feel of the game is wildly different. Apples and oranges. Comparing the two is absurd, and only seems to make any sense to the kinds of people who feel driven to prove one console objectively better than another.

“Killzone 2 and Halo 3 are fairly close”

I have to firmly disagree with you here. The games weren’t that similar other than the fact that both involved shooting. And furthermore, I just didn’t really care for Killzone 2. There was nothing wrong with it exactly. It just didn’t have anything, for me, that made it stand out from the crowd… well, it was pretty. But I think the whole draw of Killzone 2 was supposed to be that it was a technical achievement (i.e. the first game to really take advantage of the PS3 hardware). Congrats. I”m glad such things are occurring, because it paves the way for better games. But that doesn’t make Killzone II itself special. Co-op campaign would have helped for me, but YMMV. Personally, I was much more a fan of Resistance 2, if I had to pick a sci-fi shooter PS3 exclusive. The graphics didn’t match Killzone II, but I preferred the story a bit, and the weapons were some of the most imaginative I’ve ever seen in a game.

You are right, I think, that the 360 is ultimately a choice between PC gaming and console gaming. You are also right that PC versions of many of these games are accepted as better. But again, apples and oranges. People don’t choose console over PC for the games. They choose console over PC because it is far less hassle. I loved Mass Effect and Dragon Age on console. By all accounts, they are better on PC. Maybe I would have liked them more. But it’s hard for me to argue with the convenience of my consoles.

Comment by Mr. E. Nahn Ehmus on 1/7/10 at 9:28pm  |  Link to this

I’m not saying Killzone 2 and Halo 3 were similar games, I meant in quality. Personally I like Killzone 2 much better but I guess if I’m using critics’ opinions to back up an argument I can’t ignore it when it’s convenient.

And when I say Uncharted 2 beats GeOW in that category, I mean in the competition of top rated 3rd person shooters. They also have a similar combat and shooting system, but yes UC2 has many more elements to the gameplay and is uncomparable. The games are completely different but they are both the premiere TPSs of each console, hence I will compare them.

And I’d hardly say a decent gaming PC is more of a hassle than the RROD…… of my at least 30 friends with a 360 about 20 of them have had the RROD at least once. When I tell any of them that the failure rate is 54.2% they freak and act like I’m lying. Then I ask if they’ve ever had it break. They always say yes…. Point is a PC is superior to the 360 and less of a hassle.

The Wii and PS3 offer much better console experiences, depending on what you want. The 360 apes the PC and ends up inferior.

Interesting to see PC and PS3 above Xbox 360 – especially considering there were more games on PC than Xbox.

PS3 + Uncharted 2= Gaming Heaven!

Comment by DaS.RoT on 1/14/10 at 4:13pm  |  Link to this

This article is complete nonsense, as is the metacritic website. Great idea in theory, but as you can see it turns to sh!t in reality. Opinion of collections of opinions… Really?

It also doesn’t really matter what console you have, as long as YOU enjoy it, your a winner. I personally can’t stand the PS controllers, which is why I won’t buy one (not friendly to long thumbs, feels like I’m in a thumb-wrestling match every time I play one). My friends do own PS3’s though and I will gladly go over and play some Uncharted and Kill Zone though =D. Find some friends with other consoles and your all winners!

Also, don’t buy a console because of secondary features (Media center, Netflix, Facebook, Home, etc…) they are all half-baked implementations and you could do much better elsewhere.

i love videogames and something i cant seem to wrap my head around is why halo 3 has so much praise. Yeah it was a good game but i wouldnt say it was great, and certainly not legendary. The graphics compared to other fps, well there is no comparison. The last three call of duty games have so much more detail it just makes halo’s graphics seem bland. All im saying is if you slap another title on it that doesnt say Halo, would it have still got all the publicity?

To the numpty above, the death of the PC has been predicted for years – every time a new console comes out, in fact.

It’s still here. Why?

1. Technology – technology is developed faster for PCs (new technology every 12-18 months) than it would be for consoles (new technology every 5 years).

2. Mods

3. Indies.

Plus, when companies started investigating, they found that PCs pulled in more money than any other platform – due to flexibility, MMOs, technology upgrades , online gaming (adverts)- the list is quite comprehensive.

I don’t get all the hating for MW2’s lack of dedicated servers. Yes they would be good to have but that haven’t stopped me from playing the multiplayer on PC over 200 hours now, it’s great and lots of fun with friends. Isn’t that what matters the most?

As a owner of PS3, PC and X360 I can’t really say which one was the “best” this year. Only bought UC2, InFamous, Demon’s Souls and Batman for PS3 and loads of multiplatform games for X360 along with Forza 3. It’s not about exclusives, well atleast it’s not if you have most of the consoles, 90% of the great games this year were released for more than one console, like the game of the year Dragon Age: Origins.

Let’s wish for more great series going multiplatform this year like Final Fantasy and Bioshock, so everyone can enjoy these amazing games.
