Legendary singer-actor Harry Belafonte. Born in Harlem on March 1, 1927, Belafonte grew up in Jamaica, returning to New York and joining the Navy in World War II. After his discharge, he became interested in the theater when he saw a production at the American Negro Theater. He began his singing career at jazz clubs, and, finding few roles in the theater for black men, he began performing at the Village Vanguard and signed a recording contract with RCA Victor. Nightclub performances led to Hollywood movies, where he became one of the most sought-after African-American actors. He found success in television in the mid-1950s, becoming the first black performer to win an Emmy. Belafonte has also been active in the struggle for human rights around the world, helping organize the 1985 "We Are the World" recording to raise money for the starving in Africa.
